Chapter 139 Blackening
Jackie was looking around when Fiona's voice came from behind. She got scared, almost dropping the lunchbox. She hid her phone behind her back. "Ye... Secretary Woods, why aren't you having lunch with Mr. Solomon?"
Fiona's tone was calm. "He's on a call. He asked me to step aside."
Jackie broke out in a cold sweat. The call that made Secretary Woods step aside, was probably linked to Mr. Solomon already knowing about them going viral online.
"What's with that expression on your face?" Fiona looked at Jackie and smiled.
Jackie clenched her teeth. With things turning out like this, Secretary Woods would eventually find out. If only she had known earlier and prepared herself mentally.
"Take a look for yourself."Jackie handed her phone to Fiona.
As Fiona looked at it, the smile on her face disappeared completely.
"It must be that Miss Ross, feeling resentful, purposely bought these trending topics overseas just to smear your name!"Jackie hurriedly said, "But there are still people who know you and have been speaking up for you!"
Fiona saw it too. She ranked quite high on the search results related to her name, but once she opened the comment section, it was beyond imagination.
Finally, after Darwin's engagement, the thing she feared the most had happened, in such an overwhelming manner.
"Tell Mr. Solomon that I'm tired and need to rest," Fiona said toJackie. Fiona didn't look at her phone for long and handed it back toJackie.
"Secretary Woods..."Jackie stood up, her face filled with worry.
Fiona looked at her and faintly smiled, "Staying by Darwin's side, I knew this day would come sooner or later."
However, she was supposed to have avoided all this. She had already left, already distanced herself from this quagmire. It's Darwin who wouldn't let her off! Why, in the end, did she have to bear all these consequences? Before Fiona left, she happened to run into the people from this project's cooperation side. Quite unfortunate since those three men came out for a smoke and received calls from their families, full of gossip.
"Do you think Fiona has become the mistress?" one of them asked.
"Why wouldn't she be? If I remember correctly, she used to be by Darwin's side as a secretary with no official status."
"Forget about the status, how many people have actually seen Mr. Solomon and her being intimate? My wife just sent me those overseas rumors, and apart from the recent ones, the ones before weren't even considered intimate. I don't know how, but suddenly she's risen in rank..."
"I have women working in my office too. Just now, my wife called, threatening to divorce me if I didn't replace all of them. She even threatened to kick me out."
"Seriously, our Mr. Solomon doesn't seem like someone who would be fooled by a woman. This time, he fell for Secretary Woods' ploy... Choosing to marry a secretary with no influence at all instead of a wealthy heiress, I wonder what he's thinking."
Fiona took a deep breath. These three people stood on the path she had to pass through when leaving. She walked out nonchalantly.
"If you are so curious, why not go and ask in person?" Fiona's voice startled the three, causing them to drop cigarette ash on their hands. It burned and made them grimace. Fiona left those words behind, with no intention to listen to their hurried and nonsensical explanations. She walked straight ahead.
"This is bad!" All three of them wore unpleasant expressions.
"It's all your fault for running your mouths. How could you talk behind someone's back?!"
"Will she go to Mr. Solomon to complain?"
As the three nervously discussed, Darwin, with a pale face, stormed out from inside.
"Mr. Solomon!"
"Secretary Woods went towards the garage!" Darwin responded, immediately running towards the garage.
The three looked at each other. Lowering their voices, they sighed. Mr. Solomon had truly gotten himself into trouble this time. Fiona had just gotten into the car. The driver politely asked, "Madam, are we going back?"
Fiona looked somewhat dazed. "Let's take a drive along the coastline. Yes!"
The driver complied and started the car, driving away. Just as the car was leaving, Darwin caught up. He was panting, looking at the empty parking space, and viciously kicked an innocent triangular bucket on the side.
Then, he took out his phone and called Fiona. The phone rang for a while before being hung up directly. He called the driver next. Trembling, the driver handed the phone to Fiona.
Fiona glanced at him but ultimately decided not to let Darwin vent his anger on the innocent driver.
She took the phone. "Speak."
Darwin's breath was heavy. "Don't be angry. I can handle it."
"Darwin, besides getting rid of me and the children, what else can you handle?" Fiona sounded disappointed. After speaking, she hung up and returned the phone to the driver.
The car drove along the coastline until sunset. The setting sun painted the horizon and the coastline with stunning colors.
Fiona got out of the car and leaned against the front, watching the sun slowly sink, the glow fading away, until the sea breeze made her feel a bit cold. Only then did she return to the car.
Inside the vehicle was her discarded phone on the seat. It was filled with countless unread messages and missed calls. Fiona ignored her colleagues' concerns. Among them, a very few genuinely cared for her well-being, while the rest, most likely came to enjoy the spectacle.
She called Ashton back. It was very unusual that Ashton wasn't crying. "You can't just let this go, I had my friend uncover the main people who were targeting you. Let's hire a lawyer tomorrow!"
"Mhm." Fiona replied, "Don't worry too much about me, I'll be fine."
"Darwin is such a jerk. He’s acting like an egg, ‘I spent five years with you, and now you want to pursue a business alliance. If you want to get married, then go ahead and get married properly. But halfway through, you don't want her anymore’. Now, that woman has thrown all her grievances onto you!" Ashton was filled with resentment.
Completely forgetting how much Fiona admired Darwin when they were getting along not long ago, Ashton asked in a deep voice, "Does he know? Did he mention how to solve this?"
Fiona lowered her eyelids and smiled coolly. "When you really provoke him, he won't leave any room to maneuver. Hathaway doesn't understand him, so she's in for some bad luck."
Meanwhile, at Hathaway's luxurious mansion, she was on the phone with an assistant discussing whether all the information and photos had been sent to Janna Rhoads. Hathaway had other intentions behind the whole online attack on Fiona besides seeking revenge for stealing her potential husband.
She knew that Janna valued character greatly. Whether she actually had feelings for Fiona or not, as her potential heir, Hathaway had to tarnish Fiona's image in front of Janna.
No matter what, she wanted to obtain both the man and her career.
"Rest assured, they have all been sent to her email!" the assistant quickly replied. "This person will never have a place at Grandma Rhoads' from now on!"
