Chapter 69 Such Great Benefits

Hathaway took a couple of steps forward.

Her cool facade was starting to crumble. "You wanna keep him all to yourself, huh?"

Fiona wanted to deny it, but her stomach was doing somersaults.

She'd only had a bowl of ravioli today, skipped dinner, and was feeling pretty crappy.

Even the baby in her belly seemed pissed; she started dry heaving.

Hathaway's face twisted in disgust.

Was Fiona doing this just to mess with her?

"What the hell's going on?" Darwin's voice cut through the tension.

Fiona felt a wave of helplessness; why did he have to show up now?

"I didn't..." Hathaway stammered, watching Darwin jog over, looking flustered.

"What happened?" Darwin ignored her and went straight to Fiona.

"Just starving," Fiona quickly came up with a reasonable excuse, worried Darwin might get suspicious.

She straightened up and waved him off, "I'm good, Mr. Solomon. You go do your thing. I'm outta here."

She reached for the driver's door.

"I'll drive." Darwin snagged the keys before she could react and guided her to the passenger seat.

Hathaway stood there, watching the whole scene unfold.

Darwin tucked Fiona into the passenger seat, buckled her in, and shut the door.

"Darwin, you're leaving with her now? What about me?" Hathaway couldn't hold it in anymore. "Your whole family's here. If you leave with her, what will people think of me?"

Darwin turned and gave Hathaway a long, hard look. "Why'd you suddenly want to visit my grandmother today?"

The whole reason everyone was at the nursing home was Hathaway's idea.

Darwin's voice turned icy, "I hope you had nothing to do with today's mess."

"You don't trust me at all?" Hathaway looked genuinely hurt.

"Ms. Ross, we've only known each other for a short time. I don't really know you." Darwin's tone was a clear warning. "If you want this marriage alliance to go smoothly, you'd better not pull any stunts, especially against Fiona. Or I'll call off the engagement."

'Call off the engagement?' Hathaway was stunned.

She asked, "Do you know what that would cost?"

"Of course I do." Darwin looked her in the eye. "But trust me, for Fiona, I'm willing to pay that price."

Hathaway always thought she had Darwin figured out. She believed she could eventually control him.

Darwin was all about profit and would do anything to get what he wanted.

When he agreed to the marriage alliance, she felt secure.

Even knowing Fiona was in the picture, she wasn't worried.

She was sure Darwin would never ditch the marriage alliance.

But he just said he'd cancel it for Fiona.

"It's freezing out here, let's go inside." Darwin left her with that cold remark, walked around the car, and got in the driver's seat.

Then he started the car and drove off.

Mira, who had been watching from a distance, saw Darwin leave.

She rushed over. "Ms. Ross! What did Mr. Solomon say? Why do you look so pale?"

"Darwin said if I hurt Fiona, he'd call off the engagement!" Hathaway replied.

"What?" Mira was floored, then quickly tried to comfort Hathaway, "We're talking about hundreds of billions in assets here. He was just bluffing; no way he'd risk that! A secretary isn't worth that much!"

"Yeah, he was just bluffing," Hathaway muttered, eyes downcast.

"But we seriously underestimated Ms. Woods!" Mira went on, "Today she totally crushed Anniston, and Mrs. Solomon seems to adore her. Plus, she holds twenty-one percent of the Solomon Group's shares!"

"Without those shares, do you think Darwin would give her the time of day?" Hathaway sneered.

Why couldn't Darwin see through this?

Fiona was in it for the cash; she didn't love him at all.

In this world, the one who loved him the most was Hathaway.

Hathaway slowly pulled herself together.

She looked at Mira and said firmly, "Fiona has to go."

Even if Darwin wasn't serious, his threat compelled Hathaway to act. "Got it, I'll handle it!" Mira nodded.

Hathaway let out a long breath.

"By the way, I saw Janna not long ago." She switched gears.

"The one in the oil business?" Mira was surprised.

"Yeah." Hathaway nodded. "I heard from my grandmother that Janna is really unhappy with her descendants' abilities and is secretly looking for a successor."

"The Rhoads family members are a bunch of idiots, indulging in debauchery all day long. They're totally useless!" Mira said disdainfully, "Especially her eldest son."

"Janna not only has oil resources but also diamond and jade mines, shipping, military industry, and real estate, all of which are doing great." Hathaway's eyes gleamed with ambition.

"Ms. Ross, are you thinking of..."

"How could I let go of such a goldmine?"

Since learning about this, she had been trying to get close to Janna.

But Janna had been working behind the scenes for the past twenty years, rarely making public appearances.

Unexpectedly, she suddenly came to Armie.

"If I have the Rhoads family's backing, Darwin will be mine," Hathaway said, enunciating each word.

Mira lowered her eyes.

She always knew that Hathaway had liked Darwin since she was a kid.

By now, it had almost become an obsession.

In the car, Fiona pulled up the collar of her coat, covering most of her face, leaving only her eyes exposed.

"Still mad?" Darwin asked.

"I'm pissed," Fiona said coldly.

"Fiona, she's my mother," Darwin said in a deep voice.

Fiona sighed tiredly. "Did I say anything?"

Darwin glanced at her and finally dropped the subject. "What do you want to eat?"

Talking about food, Fiona's anger eased a bit.

What did she want to eat?

She instinctively touched her belly.

"A lot," she murmured.

Seeing this, Darwin couldn't help but smile a little.

At that moment, Fiona's phone rang.

Since her phone was connected to Bluetooth, Darwin saw at a glance that the caller was Harold.

Fiona glanced at it, kept a straight face, and hung up.

"Not answering?" Darwin asked, his tone already a bit mocking.

"He calls all the time, and I always hang up," Fiona lied smoothly.

Darwin was a bit suspicious.

But visibly, he was a bit happier.
