Chapter 644 the Death of Hathaway
The man on the ground cried out with anguish, accusing the Ross family of betraying Hathaway's memory. "You trampled on Hathaway's dignity and flesh. She just died, and you are kneeling like dogs in front of her killer, begging for cooperation! You don't deserve to be Hathaway's sister! I want all of you to be buried with Hathaway!" Fiona furrowed her brows, her expression tense.
"No wonder that person said that earlier," she remarked, glancing up at Darwin. "Hathaway is dead?"
Henry had just sent away the members of the Ross family when he heard Fiona's question to Darwin. Concerned she might misinterpret Mr. Solomon's involvement, he intervened hastily. "Fiona, Mr. Solomon doesn't know about this, and the Ross family hasn't made any public announcements either." Fiona looked at Henry, seeking confirmation. He proceeded to recount what the secretary had informed him earlier.
"Whether she lives or dies, it's none of our business," Darwin interjected impatiently. "Investigate this person's identity, how he infiltrated the Solomon Building, and the security's huge negligence. Fire the supervisor on duty right away!"
"Understood!" Henry responded promptly, acknowledging the directive.
It had been a while since Darwin had displayed such intense anger. Henry glanced at Fiona, seeking her approval.
She nodded reassuringly, indicating he should proceed as directed by Darwin. With that, Henry hurriedly left the room.
"Calm down," Fiona urged Darwin. "We need to go to the hospital to check on Miss Annie's condition." She replayed the video footage a few times, unable to gauge the severity of Annie's injuries.
As the man lunged forward, Annie's assistant instinctively moved to shield her. Annie was subsequently transported to a hospital owned by the Solomon Company.
Upon Fiona and Darwin's arrival, they found her propped up in bed, clutching a pen. Fiona recognized it as her own, though the cap appeared slightly misshapen.
"You've come," Annie acknowledged, returning to the present and setting the pen aside.
Fiona rushed forward to steady her as she attempted to rise.
Annie's complexion was pallid as she gestured to her abdomen. "My assistant intervened, so the injury wasn't too deep. Otherwise, I might be in Armie's place right now."
"I apologize for the lapse in building security that led to this incident," Fiona expressed sincerely.
Annie shook her head, a bitter undertone in her voice. "If he couldn't get to me here today, he'd find another way tomorrow."
Fiona pondered for a moment. "I watched the surveillance footage of the incident. Miss Hathaway passed away?"
Annie nodded. "I'm not entirely clear on the details. We weren't close, and I'm older than her. Despite that, because of her actions toward you in the past, Father was furious. Hathaway repeatedly declined arranged marriages within the family, which led to her being cast out."
Annie let out a heavy sigh. "I heard that Hathaway was battling severe depression, drowning herself in alcohol day and night. She passed away suddenly in her apartment. The family, feeling ashamed, chose not to hold a public funeral."
Fiona whispered her condolences, her voice soft.
"Don't worry, Mr. Solomon, this minor injury won't affect our future cooperation," Annie reassured Darwin, who remained silent, his expression somber.
"You should focus on recuperating, the rest can be managed by others," Darwin advised, his tone more amicable.
"It's a shame we can't share a meal today," Annie lamented regretfully.
"We can pick up where we left off once you're feeling better," Fiona offered.
Annie's smile returned promptly. "With Chelsea's words, my wounds don't hurt as much."
Before leaving, Fiona checked on Annie's assistant.
His injuries were more severe than Annie's.
The wound on his arm was deep, exposing the bone.
Fiona couldn't help but imagine the consequences if the assistant hadn't intervened, preventing the dagger from reaching Hathaway's vital organs.
After leaving the hospital, Henry called with an update.
"We've identified the assailant. He was Hathaway's roommate in the south of France. He tracked Miss Annie's flight and followed her to China. Knowing she was visiting Solomon, he hid in the parking garage cleaning vehicle overnight." Henry paused. "Secretary Woods, what's the plan for this individual?"
Fiona glanced at Darwin. "Hand him over to the authorities; let the law decide his fate."
"Agreed."
The call concluded.
Fiona reached out and touched Darwin's troubled face. "What's on your mind?"
Darwin met her gaze. "These people all know what Hathaway did to you. If she hadn't manipulated those medical records, I wouldn't have..." His expression clouded with sorrow.
Recalling the past, Darwin felt a pang of sadness.
Because of Hathaway, he lost six years with his lover and child.
"Who are they to act as if we owe something to Hathaway?" Darwin's voice resonated deeply with emotion.
If it weren't for Fiona, Darwin wouldn't extend such kindness to these people.
"Let's not dwell on the past now that she's gone. And if you truly trust me, what use are those documents?" Fiona's tone was measured.
Darwin stiffened, panic creeping in.
"That's all in the past; I won't repeat it," Darwin declared, reaching for Fiona's hand.
Fiona didn't withdraw.
"The past is behind us," she assured him. "Don't let it define you."
"Okay," Darwin agreed.
"Let's head home."
The weather was dreary, rain drizzling from the overcast sky.
As they drove, Fiona mulled over the pen.
She revisited the surveillance footage.
For some reason, Annie emerged from the elevator clutching that pen.
When the incident occurred, the pen fell to the ground, its cap likely damaged.
Fiona pondered briefly, then messaged Laura, [I recall you're an avid pen collector, right?]
[Yes!] Laura responded enthusiastically.
[Do you know the brand of the pen Annie used today?]
Moments later, Laura sent a few pictures. [Isn't it gorgeous? I fell in love with it instantly and asked my pen-dealer friend about it after our meeting!]
[Can you acquire it?]
"Unfortunately, it's a unique, discontinued item. You won't find it anywhere," Laura replied.
Fiona sighed inwardly.
[Oh well...]
Laura sensed Fiona's disappointment.
She knew Fiona well enough to understand she wouldn't covet something cherished by someone else, no matter how beautiful it was.
