Chapter 1513
Terrence wasn't exactly fond of his grandpa, Atticus.
Back in the day, Atticus had quite the body count and was scared stiff about ending up in hell. He figured this church was his ticket to heaven, so he asked Terrence to hold a service for him there, hoping for a shot at redemption.
Terrence showed up early to scope out the place.
As he strolled past the church, he overheard Mason mention that love prayers were especially potent here. With a shrug, Terrence thought, 'If it's that good, why not give it a whirl?'
After his prayer, he looked up and locked eyes with a pair of dreamy, beautiful ones.
Terrence truly believed.
"Why do you spill everything to me?" Chicago asked, resting her chin on her hand, gazing at the face so close to hers.
"Who knows when you might take off? Gotta make sure you know my backstory in record time."
His backstory included past flings, his parents' sudden passing, and being stuck in places with people he couldn't stand. At 29, his dating history was a big fat zero. He also shared about his job, salary, future dreams, and where he planned to settle.
By the end of the next spring, Janna got seriously sick and ended up in the ICU.
Chicago, who was already working in the capital, rushed back.
Fiona, Darwin, Kenny, and Thalassa pulled out all the stops, spending a fortune to save her. But Janna was left frail, needing a wheelchair to get around.
Janna, who'd always lived carefree, couldn't handle it and started fading away.
She only perked up when the kids were around.
At night, Chicago tucked Janna in.
When she came out, she overheard Charles and Charlotte chatting about wedding plans with their folks, Kenny, and Thalassa.
"Even if superstitions are silly, a little celebration at home wouldn't hurt since it's been ages since we had something to cheer about," Thalassa said.
"Sure thing, Mom, Dad, you pick the date, and I'll make sure to get time off," Charles agreed.
"Charlotte, aren't you knee-deep in some Nobel Prize-worthy research? How will you find the time?" Chicago asked, walking over.
"The prize can wait. Making great-grandma happy is what matters," Charlotte replied, shaking her head.
"You focus on your work. I'll handle the wedding," Chicago said, pulling a thin chain from her collar. A ring dangled from it.
She slipped off the ring.
In front of her parents, Thalassa, Charles, and Charlotte, who were all taken aback, she slid it onto her right ring finger.
"I started seeing someone at the church a few months back. He popped the question last month, and I said yes."
"Are you serious?" Charles frowned.
"Where? At the church? Chicago, did you snag a churchgoer?" Thalassa asked.
Kenny nodded beside her.
"Take it off, take it off! Who told you to wear a ring like that? Take it off!" Darwin stood up, rolling up his sleeves, visibly angry.
Fiona held him down.
"Honey, look at her!" Darwin was fuming.
"You've met him," Chicago blinked gently. "Terrence, remember? We had dinner together a few times in January."
"Who?" Darwin's voice grew louder.
Terrence was a new partner the Solomon Group had teamed up with in Rosewood City.
"Terrence," Chicago blinked again.
"I'm calling someone to break his legs right now!" Darwin shouted angrily.
It was chaos.
Terrence showed up at Emerald Pool to meet Darwin and the others that very night.
At first, Chicago was pretty worried, but... When Darwin emerged from the study, he was like a new man, turning into a kind and gentle father-in-law.
But in the end, it wasn't Chicago and Terrence who tied the knot.
