Chapter 1100

Tom listened without a word.

When the car stopped, Darwin said, "Find a parking lot and wait for me."

He got out.

Tom didn't dare ask where Darwin was going or why.

He just followed orders.

Darwin crossed the street.

Rex saw him and lit up. He ran over. "Uncle Darwin!"

"Where are your shoes?" Darwin asked.

"Another homeless guy stole them while I was sleeping in the park," Rex said, looking down.

"Sleeping? How long have you been out here?" Darwin asked sternly.

"Just since last night," Rex mumbled.

"What's your parents' phone number?" Darwin took out his phone. "Leaving a kid out all night, are they nuts?"

"Uncle Darwin," Rex said, panicking, "Don't call them. My grandma will be back soon. This was just an accident!"

Darwin frowned. "And if she doesn't come back, will you stay outside forever?"

Rex said nothing.

"What about other family members?" Darwin asked, trying to stay calm.

"They probably wish I was dead. I don't dare seek them out," Rex replied.

Darwin felt a pang in his chest.

"So you come to me, a stranger?" he asked.

Rex smiled. "You're more reliable than them!"

"What do you want me to do? Get you a hotel room?" Darwin asked.

Just then, an old lady with a bag walked over from across the street.

She looked at Darwin strangely.

"Uncle Darwin, you're famous. She probably recognized you. Follow me!" Rex said, grabbing Darwin's hand and running towards a small gate in the park.

The old lady, now at the crosswalk, kept looking back.

"Did I see the wrong person?" she muttered.

When the light turned green, she crossed the street.

After entering the small gate and walking a bit, they arrived at a secluded, lush garden.

"I slept here last night!" Rex patted a bench under a tree. "It's nice and cool!"

Darwin looked around.

Then he looked at Rex. "Why did your mom kick you out?"

Rex's smile faded. He sat down, shrugged, "I'm not her biological child."

Darwin's expression changed slightly.

Rex continued, "She hates that my grandma dotes on me. When she's mad at my dad, she takes it out on me."

Darwin said nothing, his face stern.

Rex looked up at him. "When I was in North Alabama, I saw you with your kids, and I was really envious. Your wife is different from my mom; she's very gentle. You're also different from my dad."

He paused. "He doesn't love me and has always been cold to me. You love your kids a lot, I can see, so I envy them."

"If they're not good to you, give up on them and become strong yourself," Darwin said, leaning on his cane as he walked towards Rex. When he reached him, he hesitated but then gently patted Rex's head. "Then, become the kind of father you want to be."

"Can I?" Rex asked.

"Of course you can." Darwin nodded. "When I was young, my family didn't like me either, including my parents."

He stopped there.

"But look at me now. I have a loving partner and adorable kids. Everything changed." Mentioning his wife and kids, Darwin's expression softened.

"I hope when I grow up, I can be like you, Uncle Darwin!" Rex nodded eagerly.

Darwin thought for a moment, then shook his head. "I'm not that great. I did a lot of things that hurt my wife in the past. You mustn't do that when you grow up."

"Got it." Rex listened intently and nodded.

"Uncle Darwin, your hand is bleeding!" Rex suddenly exclaimed, looking at Darwin's sleeve.
