Chapter 35 Kidnapping
Sally was knocking back drinks.
Fiona didn't say much, just Venmo'd her some cash so she could treat the folks who helped out.
Then, she started packing her stuff, nice and slow.
While folding up yesterday's clothes, a diamond cufflink tumbled out.
Fiona froze for a sec and reached down to grab it.
She remembered spotting this cufflink in some fancy designer store last year on a business trip with Darwin. She loved it so much she blew two months' salary on it.
Looking back, it was kinda funny. She knew her place and was scared giving gifts would be too much.
Darwin crashed at her place when they got back.
The next day, she quietly slipped it onto his suit sleeve.
"I'll take you with us too." Fiona squeezed the cufflink in her hand.
The edges dug into her palm, making it tingle.
After packing up, Fiona checked out and ordered a light but healthy meal at the hotel restaurant.
She took a few bites.
Her phone buzzed with a small group chat lighting up.
It was the CEO's office crew chatting about the engagement ring Darwin gave Hathaway.
Someone even dropped a pic of the ring, with a massive diamond on it.
Fiona stared at the huge rock in the pic.
Then she glanced at the diamond cufflink in her hand, which looked pretty lame in comparison.
She was about to stash her phone away.
A message from Darwin popped up: [Answer the phone.]
Fiona stared at the chat box for a moment.
Fiona: [Mr. Solomon, the New Port infrastructure project is fully handed over.]
She typed it out and hit send.
Without waiting for Darwin's reply, she fired off another message.
Fiona: [I've handed over all the secretary work notes to Ms. Robbins. Everything's done, and I won't be coming back to the company. As for the Executive President gig, after thinking it over, it's not for me, so forget it.]
Darwin's call came through immediately.
Fiona hung up right away and blocked his number.
She turned off her phone and tossed it into her bag.
Then, she slowly finished her meal.
Another phone rang.
She picked it up, hearing a voice on the other end. "Ms. Woods, I'm the driver to take you to the airport!"
"So early?" Fiona checked the time, it was twenty minutes ahead of schedule.
"I just dropped off a passenger from the airport. If you're not in a rush, I can wait for you for twenty minutes." The driver sounded chill.
Fiona thought for a moment.
Didn't really matter where she waited.
She replied, "No need, I'm coming down now."
Fiona was super cautious.
Before getting in the car, she double-checked the license plate to make sure it was the right ride.
The driver got out and tossed her suitcase in the trunk.
Fiona slid into the back seat.
After a bit, the car hit the highway.
The airport was a good distance from the city, and it took over an hour on the highway.
Midway, Thalassa called to confirm Fiona's flight arrival time and said she'd pick her up.
Thalassa was griping about how her new gig was a total drag.
Fiona smiled and tried to cheer her up.
Her eyes drifted to the window.
A road sign zipped by.
Fiona's heart skipped a beat.
The sign pointed in the opposite direction of the airport.
"Thalassa, I gotta handle something. I'll call you back," Fiona said, hanging up.
She kept her cool.
She pulled out her phone and looked up the place on the road sign.
Yep, definitely not the way to the airport.
"Hey, if there's a rest stop up ahead, can you pull over? I need to use the restroom," Fiona asked sweetly.
"No rest stops on this road, hold it in," the driver, who seemed chill before, now sounded sketchy.
"Then please drive faster and get me to the airport soon," Fiona added.
She quickly lowered her head, typing out a message with the license plate number and a distress signal, ready to send it to the cops.
Suddenly, the car screeched to a halt.
Fiona instinctively shielded her stomach and slammed into the seat.
The pain made her head spin, almost knocking her out.
The driver got out.
Fiona immediately hit the lock button.
But it didn't work.
The car door swung open.
In a flash, her phone was snatched away.
"Calling the cops?" The driver glanced at the unsent message and smashed her phone to the ground.
Fiona shook with fear.
But she didn't scream.
She knew staying calm was key.
"Do you want money?" she asked.
The driver sneered, "Ms. Woods, don't you know what you've done? Think you can mess up someone's plans and just walk away?"
"Mack sent you?" Fiona asked.
"Right on!" The driver suddenly yanked her hair.
Fiona's scalp hurt so bad it went numb.
The driver added, "Bitch, he just took some money from your company. Those rich folks have more cash than they can spend, what's wrong with giving him a little? You had to ruin everything? You got a real cold heart!"
Fiona tried to stay calm. "You do this for money. Let me go, and I'll give you more."
The driver scoffed, "I follow Mack 'cause he saved my life. Not everyone sells out for cash like you."
Fiona knew this guy wasn't gonna be bought.
The cops were after Mack.
Anyone he trusted now had to be loyal.
Fiona could only hope the distress message had gone through.
She needed Darwin's help.
Otherwise, she'd die out here, and no one would know.
"He wants to see me, right?" Fiona impatiently pushed the driver away and got back in the car. "Stop yapping and drive."
She forced herself to stay calm.
She didn't show the driver any fear.
The driver glanced at her and sneered, "A few of my buddies heard you're a looker and can't wait to meet you. When we get there, make sure to scream loud, or it won't be fun!"
With that, the driver slammed the car door shut, sneering as he got back in and started the car again.
