Chapter 1143
Fiona's car was chilling at the corner. She was just sitting in the car, watching the rain slam against the windows.
"Should I go in and check?" Christopher asked.
Fiona shook her head.
Right then, someone finally popped out from the empty police station entrance.
Xavier, holding an umbrella, helped Darwin toward the car parked at the entrance.
He got Darwin into the car and instinctively scoped the area.
Since Fiona chose such an inconspicuous spot to park, Xavier completely missed seeing them.
Xavier didn't waste any time.
He ditched the umbrella and hopped into the car.
"Mr. Solomon, should I find a place for you to grab a bite first?" Xavier asked Darwin.
He'd known Darwin for years, but he had never seen him like this.
Darwin had been a mess after Fiona faked her death and bailed.
But now, he looked like a total wreck.
There was no spark in his eyes, just a void.
"No need, head back to Bay City," Darwin said after a pause.
"Yes, Mr. Solomon!" Xavier replied, not daring to push back.
He fired up the car and headed toward Bay City.
Originally, Xavier had the GPS set for Emerald Pool.
But Darwin, looking all disheveled, said, "Go to Starry Century first."
Xavier said, "Mr. Solomon, Mrs. Solomon will notice you're not home when she gets back from work."
Darwin looked up calmly. "If she sees me like this, she'll freak out more. If she can't find me, she'll ask you. Just tell her I lost my phone and will be home soon."
"Got it," Xavier said, feeling the weight.
He wanted to ask why Darwin was here or what he was up to, but he couldn't bring himself to.
Darwin stared out the window.
Early that morning, Rex had called him.
It was noisy on the other end, with a woman cussing and stuff being smashed.
Rex said, "Darwin, my mom is gonna kill me. Please come save me!"
Darwin got up immediately.
As he walked toward the elevator, he asked what had gone down.
"I don't know. My parents were fighting. My mom said I'm not her kid, that my grandma and dad killed her child and swapped him with me. She wants to kill me to avenge her real son!" Rex cried. A woman's hysterical screams could be heard faintly.
Darwin could feel Rex's helplessness and fear.
"Find a place to hide. I'll be there soon!" Darwin said.
Following the address Rex gave, he drove for nearly two hours and finally found a terrified Rex in an abandoned amusement park in the morning fog.
Rex looked even worse than the last time Darwin had seen him.
He wasn't wearing shoes, his feet were covered in wounds, his face was bruised all over, one cheek was swollen, and there were whip marks on his arms and legs.
"Did your mom do this?" Darwin asked.
"Darwin, what should I do? I have no home. Everyone is lying. My mom, my dad, even my grandma! What should I do with my life?" Rex said.
"Don't cry," Darwin said, squatting down and gently wiping away Rex's tears.
"If they mistreat you, you don't need 'em. Come back with me. My wife is a good person. I used to be bad, but she was still good to me. She'll be good to you too," Darwin said, his voice choking up a bit.
