Chapter 1158

Fiona was eavesdropping on Chicago and Charles, who were deep in conversation.

She shot a look at Darwin, itching to point out how much taller Chicago was compared to Charles.

But Darwin seemed lost in his own world.

"Why don't you give him a ring first?" Fiona nudged Darwin's sleeve.

Darwin snapped back to reality and glanced at Chicago, who was ahead of Charles.

"Wait for me in the car," he said.

"Got it," Fiona nodded.

The school gate was a madhouse. Fiona and Darwin were there to pick up the kids, but it was way too packed to make a call.

Darwin stepped aside. He didn't have Rex's number saved, so he found him on Facebook and dialed.

The phone rang for what felt like forever.

Just when Darwin thought Rex wouldn't pick up, Rex answered. "Uncle Darwin."

"Thank God you answered," Darwin sighed in relief. "How you holding up? Is your injury better? No one's messing with you anymore, right?"

"She left. I'm with Grandma now," Rex's voice crackled through the static.

Darwin could hear the disappointment and sadness in his voice.

What kid wouldn't be bummed after being ditched by their mom?

"The injury's better. Grandma's been looking after me. Don't worry, Uncle Darwin."

"How can I not worry?" Darwin said. "When I was picking up Chicago, I thought I saw you in the crowd."

"Sorry for making you worry. I'll come see you when I'm back in Bay City," Rex said sincerely.

Darwin glanced at the car, where Fiona stood, smiling and waving at him.

Darwin's expression softened. "Okay, when you come back, my wife and I will visit you."

Rex agreed.

A voice crackled through the speaker. "Uncle Darwin, the signal's bad. Let's catch up when I'm back."

"Alright."

Rex hung up.

Darwin realized he hadn't asked which family Rex was from.

"I'll ask next time," he muttered, walking back to Fiona.

"What did he say?" Fiona asked.

"The person who hurt him is gone. He's with his grandma now, and she's taking good care of him," Darwin replied.

Fiona noticed he seemed more relaxed.

She squeezed his arm. "It's all good."

"He said he'll come find me when he's back in Bay City. I'll bring you along," Darwin added.

"Sure," Fiona smiled. "Let's talk about it later. Chicago's starving."

Chicago always got cranky if she didn't eat on time.

When Fiona and Darwin got in the car, Charles was unwrapping a chocolate bar for Chicago.

The chocolate wasn't from home; it was from Evelyn, and Charles saved it for Chicago.

"You always bring her treats," Fiona smiled. "What if she gets chubby because of you?"
