Chapter 466 A Desperate Situation!
"HR?"
Fiona murmured, puzzled.
Charles clasped her thumb and waggled it, "Mommy, why do people call you Secretary Woods?"
Fiona pinched Charles's chubby cheek.
"That's a long story. I'll tell you all about it later. But for now, shall we go see the people you've been wanting to meet?"
Chicago and Charles nodded vigorously. Then they let go of Fiona's hand and scampered inside.
Fiona stood at the doorway, glancing once more at her own former employee ID card.
The person in the photo was gentle and mild-mannered, so different from herself.
It had been so long since she had seen that version of herself that a wave of nostalgia washed over her suddenly.
Darwin had been absent from the company for quite some time.
Today, he had suddenly returned, causing a tense atmosphere in the executive wing.
Cassie had just come back from a meeting.
She was carrying a stack of documents that needed to be sorted and distributed to various departments today.
While allocating the work among her colleagues, someone gently poked her waist from behind.
Cassie spun around in surprise, and upon recognizing the little figure behind her, she was completely stunned.
"Do you remember me?" Chicago asked sweetly.
It took Cassie a moment, and then she flashed a look of realization, "Chicago, when did you get here?"
"Just now."
"Does Mr. Solomon—no, does your dad know you're here?" Cassie remembered the last time this young lady had sneaked in.
Chicago shook her head.
Cassie's knees nearly buckled.
The young heiress really had no idea of the dangers of the world!
Such a sweet kid, wandering outside without parental supervision, could easily fall victim to someone with bad intentions.
"Sit tight, Chicago; I'm calling your dad right away!" Cassie said as she quickly reached for the landline, intending to buzz the conference room.
But when Mr. Solomon was in a meeting, he wouldn't take calls.
"No need." A pleasant voice came from beside her.
Cassie and her colleagues turned in surprise, completely bewildered.
"Mommy!" Chicago ran up to Fiona and took her hand. "This is Cassie; she made me a really pretty braid last time I was here!"
"Is that so?" Fiona's smile was warmly disarming, as refreshing as a spring breeze in March.
"Mi... Miss Rhoads!" Cassie hurried to greet her.
Fiona glanced at the piles of documents next to Cassie. "We just stopped by on our way; don't mind us. Continue with your work, and there's no need to disturb Mr. Solomon's meeting."
"Okay," Cassie replied, pointing to Darwin's office, "Mr. Solomon's office is right over there."
Fiona nodded.
After all these years, the executive suite had stayed the same.
She remembered when she had resigned; Darwin brought in Bella to fill her position.
Within days, Bella replaced all the plants Fiona had arranged in the executive suite with new ones.
Now, the plants were back to the way they had been during her time.
Fiona's gaze finally settled on the closed door of the secretarial office.
"Who's using that office now?" Fiona casually asked.
Cassie, turning pale, replied, "It's currently vacant."
It was common knowledge that Miss Rhoads and the current Mrs. Solomon bore a striking resemblance to each other.
Online speculation about Secretary Woods had intensified recently; those who disliked Chelsea were eager to publicize the love story between Secretary Woods and Mr. Solomon.
Cassie didn't believe for a second that Mrs. Solomon was unaware.
This question put her in an impossible position!
No matter how she responded, if Mrs. Solomon were to become upset and confront Mr. Solomon, Cassie would be the scapegoat bearing the brunt of the fallout.
"Carry on," Fiona said, and with a tender voice, continued speaking with Chicago as they walked towards the executive office.
Cassie hung her head low.
"My career is over," she lamented to her colleagues.
But her colleagues caught up in excitement and didn't share her dread.
"Wow, she's even prettier in person than on video!" whispered a colleague in awe.
"I haven't met Secretary Woods, but seeing Miss Rhoads today… How do I put it? It's hard to imagine anyone outshining her – her looks, her figure, her aura... Absolutely flawless!"
"And she's so smart too. What door did God possibly close on her?"
Cassie remained speechless, not knowing what doors God had closed for Mrs. Solomon.
But it seemed like God had sealed all of hers shut.
Once Chicago entered Darwin's office, she hadn't left.
She diligently attended an hour of online class.
Taking advantage of a moment when her mom wasn't paying attention, she sneaked a cookie and then sprawled out on the couch, fast asleep.
Fiona returned after taking a call.
She found the little one sleeping like a log.
She couldn't help but laugh and cry at the sight.
From her bag, she took out a thin blanket and gently laid it over her.
Checking the time, she realized it was time to check on Charles.
Fiona tiptoed out.
Cassie and the others looked at her. "Miss Rhoads, need a hand?"
With a smile, Fiona replied, "The little one's asleep. I'm going to check on her brother. Should she wake up before I get back, please tell her I've gone to see him."
Her brother?
Cassie and her colleagues were taken aback.
Were the rumors about Mr. Solomon's Charles true? Was he here, too?
Why wasn't he with his mother? Such a young child, where could he go to play at the Solomons?
Of course, these queries still needed to be answered.
They agreed to Fiona's request and watched her leave.
It was a fortunate coincidence.
As Fiona reached the destined floor, she bumped into the top talents that Darwin had poached, who happened to be outside taking a smoke break.
"This morning completely blew my mind," said one, exhaling a smoke ring with a look of sadness.
Another one rubbed his shiny forehead. "It's good that the junior is strong."
"It's not just that; this kid's too sharp. He was clueless when he arrived, but now, it feels like he's got it all figured out!" lamented the man in the thick glasses.
Fiona listened silently.
These three really fit the bill for the typical programmer stereotype.
Before heading down, Fiona had sent a message to Burl.
They were chatting when Burl came rushing out.
"Sis!"
The three pros who had been in deep conversation turned their gazes in unison.
Their cheeks flushed when they saw Fiona.
