Chapter 537 I Like You the Most
Thalassa went up to him and wrapped him in a hug, planting a kiss on his lips. "Why haven't you gone to bed yet?"
It was almost one in the morning.
"I was waiting for you to have some late-night snacks," Kenny responded softly. "I went to your favorite barbecue spot and brought back a bunch of takeout."
"You went all the way to the south of town?" Thalassa was stunned. The trip to and from the old city area took an hour and a half.
"I had nothing to do after finishing my tasks, so I waited until Charles and Chicago fell asleep and made the trip." Kenny said, then with a hint of pride. "I also learned to make fruit tea from online recipes—it turned out quite good!"
"Really? Where is it? I must taste it right away."
Fiona watched the adorable Kenny and Thalassa head for the kitchen, a smile in her eyes. "This time, Thalassa has really chosen the right person."
Fiona could clearly perceive the emotional value Kenny brought to Thalassa. Without a hint of arrogance in him, always putting Thalassa first.
Darwin observed Fiona's expression, a mix of happiness and envy in her eyes. It made him reflect. Once, she'd looked at Thalassa with that same all-encompassing affection. Had he realized sooner, been more aware, maybe he wouldn't be in this awkward place they were now.
"What are you looking at?" At that moment, Fiona caught the glance from the side.
With a side eye toward Kenny, she asked a bit sharply.
Darwin responded with feigned grievance, "You should hug me and kiss me too."
It was more of a playful comment; he didn't actually expect it to happen.
"Bow your head," Fiona commanded, tilting her chin upward.
Darwin hesitated, then obediently bowed his head. Fiona kissed his forehead and then, as if nothing had happened, headed to the dining room.
Thalassa, visibly excited, poured her a cup of the fruit tea. "Babe, Kenny's a genius! This is even better than what they sell in stores!"
Fiona took the item with a chuckle. From the corner of her eye, she noticed Darwin still standing there, motionless. Her smile deepened. Perhaps it was the recent shared hardships, but Darwin had been proving himself more than competent lately. The obsessions that once gripped her heart had begun to ease.
If choices were limited, the best move was to make the most of the hand you're dealt and keep on living life. A harmonious relationship between parents can profoundly influence a child's approach to relationships later in life. Take the example of Justin's family; with three kids all named Charles, not one of them had a normal love life. Fiona couldn't believe there wasn't a reason behind it.
"This is delicious!" Fiona exclaimed after sipping the fruit tea, genuinely impressed.
Thalassa beamed with pride. "Of course, Kenny didn’t just pick the fruits randomly. He selected them scientifically to blend their flavors for an even better taste."
Fiona gave Kenny a thumbs up in approval.
"Hey, why did Darwin go upstairs?" Thalassa suddenly turned her attention to the living room. "Isn't he having the snack with us?"
Fiona was taken aback and turned around to see that, indeed, Darwin was no longer in the living room.
"Maybe he felt inferior because he can't make fruit tea?" Thalassa mused quietly.
After a moment's thought, Fiona said, "You start eating, I'll go check on him."
"Sure." Thalassa nodded.
Once Fiona left, Kenny picked out Thalassa's favorite pieces of meat, carefully removing them from the skewers and placing them onto a small plate for Thalassa.
Seeing Thalassa's mood lift, Kenny breathed a sigh of relief. "Honey, Justin came to me today," he said with his arm wrapped around her waist. "He was trying to stir up trouble, even showed me a photo of you with Chris."
"A photo?" Thalassa frowned in disgust.
Kenny fed Thalassa a piece of meat and continued, "He also planned to tattle to Mom and Dad. So, I made a call to them for him."
"They know about it too?" Thalassa’s alarm bells started to ring.
"Yeah." Kenny, with a mysterious smile, added, "They're still arguing about it at home."
"You don't think they want us to divorce, do you?" Thalassa's mood took a nosedive.
"No," Kenny hastened to clarify. "I only found out today, grandfather had adopted a boy once. He's now my oldest uncle."
Kenny leaned in closer and whispered, "Mom dated him when she was in her teens, and dad knows about it."
"What?" Thalassa's eyes widened in shock.
Kenny was chatting with Thalassa about a recent family celebration they had attended.
"Remember how Uncle Joe showed up in that ridiculously flashy outfit? It really got under Dad's skin, and today, just because Justin snitched, it set Dad off again. A couple grumbles and they were at each other's throats."
"Justin's such a snake, doesn't do anything worthwhile," Thalassa spat out angrily.
Kenny's smile faded slightly. "Don't worry, karma's already catching up to him."
Thalassa looked puzzled. "Huh?"
Kenny fed her another piece of steak.
"Did everything go smoothly with your plans today?" he asked, smoothly steering the conversation elsewhere.
Thalassa's eyes widened. "You know what we've been up to?"
"I have a rough idea," Kenny replied calmly.
"It's embarrassing to talk about that hocus-pocus stuff with a physics whiz like you," Thalassa muttered.
Kenny found her endearing yet again.
"Well, the whiz kid here is giving Mrs. Thalassa a free pass. Even if Mrs. Thalassa delves into superstitions, she can always come to the whiz kid. Who knows, maybe you'll get some support from the world of physics," Kenny joked with a serious expression.
Thalassa couldn't help but laugh at that.
Then she leaned in and kissed Kenny. "You're really great, Kenny!"
Watching her laugh, Kenny brushed his nose against hers affectionately.
"By the way," Thalassa said, suddenly recalling her meeting with Chris, "tomorrow, Bao and I have to meet up with Chris."
Kenny's smile dimmed. "Is it absolutely necessary?"
"Yeah." Thalassa nodded with certainty. "But don't worry, I have no feelings for Chris anymore. You’re the one that I like the most."
The next day.
Fiona listened as Thalassa openly recounted her experiences.
"And he agreed just like that?"
Thalassa nodded with enthusiasm. "Yes, and he was so happy."
Fiona gave her a thumbs up.
Romantics truly need to be with other romantics. It's the ultimate solution for love-struck brains.
Meanwhile, after Fiona went upstairs, she checked in on Charles and Chicago, then headed to her own room.
To her surprise, Darwin was already in bed.
Walking over to him, she gently tapped his shoulder. "What's up with you? Who upset you?"
It was his choice to kiss her.
After the kiss, he had gotten all moody.
Indeed, it seemed like giving men any kind of positive attention was a mistake.
Darwin patted the space next to him on the bed.
With a sigh, Fiona lay down beside him.
Darwin looked at her, his handsome eyes slightly red.
"Have you been crying?" Fiona asked.
Darwin shook his head, continued staring at her, and then asked, "Honey, when you kissed me just now... does that mean you're willing to give me another chance?" "
