Chapter 364 A Child's Secrets Can't Be Hidden
Fiona thought for a moment. "It doesn't really matter where we live. Have you furnished the other place fully? We have to be extra careful with Charles' condition. I'm worried that any new things you buy won’t be eco-friendly."
"I’ll take the kids there tomorrow to check on everything. I’ll be very careful. If you're still not comfortable with the idea, I can stay here first. Once the other place is safe and secure, we can move back," Darwin said, resting his forehead on the back of her hand. "I don't want us to be apart anymore."
A twinge of pain shot through Fiona’s heart.
She pulled her hand back resolutely. "Darwin, you're swinging back and forth like you have a split personality. You go from good to bad in waves."
She stood up. "Go to the guest room and get some sleep."
With that, Fiona went straight upstairs.
Darwin knew she was still angry.
He was dancing in a minefield because of his vengeful acts against the Rhoads family. He had also used Dagmar to threaten her.
After Fiona went upstairs, she took a quick shower and tiptoed into the children's room.
Chicago was sound asleep. So was Charles.
Fiona carefully lifted Chicago into Charles' bed then lay down between her son and daughter.
She had missed the kids terribly all day and was worried about Charles' health.
Her heart settled a bit now that she was finally able to hug and kiss them,.
She had stayed up late the night before, working.
The next day, Fiona got up later than usual, the same time as Charles and Chicago.
Chicago, woke up in her mother’s arms and was as happy as could be, sticking close to Fiona and cuddling with her all morning.
Charles was calmer, but anyone who knew him could tell he was in exceptionally good spirits too.
"Dad's not here, so let's have a little chat. Did he do alright yesterday?" Fiona asked as she and Charles took their seats in a cozy nook of their suburban home.
"He did fine," Charles replied succinctly.
He had always been considerate of both his and his sister's feelings, which was commendable.
"And what about you, Chicago?" Fiona turned toward her younger daughter.
Chicago thought for a moment, remembering what happened the night before when that fierce woman had lashed out at Jessie and how Darwin had picked her up, declaring himself her protector.
"Time to brush my teeth!" Chicago announced.
She slipped out of bed like an eel and scurried to the bathroom, busying herself with her toothbrush.
"She thinks so too," Charles whispered to Fiona.
Fiona smiled and hugged Charles. "If you both think he's good, then I’m relieved."
After Chicago finished freshening up, she trotted downstairs.
Darwin had stayed over that night. His staff, who were up before dawn, had delivered fresh clothes for him.
Today, Mr. Solomon was still dressed in his casual, domestic outfit.
"Wow!" Wendy exclaimed, thrilled to see Chicago up early. "You’re up before Charles today!"
Chicago just looked at her indifferently, as if highlighting her own laziness.
Standing at the top of the stairs, she asked Darwin, "Why are you still here?"
"Mr. Darwin didn't go home last night," Wendy answered for Chicago, "and he even prepared breakfast for you and Charles himself."
"What about Mom’s breakfast?" Chicago immediately asked with concern.
She and her brother might skip his breakfast, but he had to make one for their mom!
"Mom's food is ready too," Darwin replied with a smile.
Clearly, Chicago took her role as her mother’s protector seriously.
Little Miss Independent walked with hands behind her back toward the dining room.
When Wendy saw this, she whispered, "Mr. Darwin, don’t worry. The young lady is happy to see you."
"Is she?" Darwin's eyes brightened instantly.
Wendy nodded. "When she's happy, she walks with her head held high, and if she wasn't trying to act composed in front of you, she might even be humming a tune."
Darwin felt a heartwarming affection and told Wendy, "Thank you, I'll be sure to give you an extra bonus at the end of the year."
After saying that, Darwin followed Chicago to the dining room.
Wendy was over the moon.
It seemed that her prayers for financial blessings this year were really working!
"Banana pancakes, milk, the cherry tomatoes Chicago picked yesterday, along with some nuts and greens," Darwin rattled off the menu as he placed Chicago's breakfast tray before her, then added with a hint of pride, "The banana pancakes were made using a method mom used before."
Before?
Chicago stared at the pancakes in front of her.
‘Was that before Mom had me and Charles?’ she wondered.
Just then, Fiona and Charles made their way into the dining room.
"Good morning," Darwin greeted Fiona.
"Morning," she replied with a subdued tone.
Darwin then turned to Charles. "Did you sleep well last night?"
"Not bad," Charles nodded as a staff member swiftly brought over their breakfast.
Fiona paused as she looked at the banana pancakes. "Did you make these?" she asked Darwin.
"Yep." He nodded. "I found your banana pancake recipe in the kitchen. I've made them a few times. They're not as good as yours, but they're pretty decent."
She didn't respond and quietly took a bite. The texture was silky smooth, the moisture level and flavor just right.
"Are they good, Mom?" Chicago asked, her big eyes twinkling with curiosity.
Fiona turned to him, her smile warm. "Daddy made them, so of course they're delicious. Make sure you eat them all up, Chicago."
"Okay!" Chicago nodded vigorously and started eating with evident enjoyment.
Darwin couldn't have been happier. He hoped Fiona would compliment him more, but after a while, she barely spoke to him.
After breakfast, Fiona went upstairs to change, put on her makeup, and prepared to head to work. Chicago was clingy, hugging her and showering her with little endearments.
Darwin watched enviously, coveting both Chicago's and Fiona's affection.
"Take care of the little ones for me today," Fiona said to Darwin after one last cuddle with Chicago. "Don’t take them to my studio, okay? It's really busy."
"Alright," he agreed.
Fiona was puzzled by his disappointed look. Was he still thinking about going to the studio?
"Give me a kiss," she said.
Fiona bent down and both Charles and Chicago planted kisses on her before she hurried out the door.
The two little ones and the tall figure of Darwin stood at the doorway, listening as the car engine started up and faded into the distance.
Chicago suddenly turned to Darwin with a sly smile. "You didn't get a kiss, did you?"
Darwin could almost hear a loud thud right above him.
"Do you know why?" Chicago asked with a grin.
Darwin shook his head.
"Because you're not as good as us. You argued with Mom and made her upset," Chicago declared before humming a tune and bouncing off to change into her play clothes for a trip to the local park.
Charles stood there, expressionlessly and turned to Darwin, "She might be a little cheeky, but she's got a point."
After Charles left, Darwin massaged his face as he tried not to laugh or cry.
Moments later, Chicago, decked out in a light grey tracksuit and humming a tune, came downstairs.
Darwin turned to look at her, then paused, momentarily caught off guard.
Children couldn’t really hide their feelings.
She was in an outfit that matched the casual clothes Darwin was wearing. They were both wearing the same color.
