Chapter 110 Breaking Off the Engagement
Early the next morning, a breaking news story made its way to the top of the hot search list, going viral.
"#Solomons and Ross Family Peacefully Break Off Engagement#"
Clicking into the article, the reason for the broken engagement was revealed. After spending time together, the couple realized they were incompatible. Both parties chose to end the engagement and continue their relationship as friends. The ongoing alliance between the Solomons and the Ross Family would not be affected by the breakup.
Ashton saw the news and immediately called Fiona.
Fiona was still asleep, groggily answering the phone. She heard Ashton's excited voice on the other end, "Sweetheart!! Are you still sleeping? Wake up! Darwin and that foreign lady have broken off their engagement!"
Fiona took a moment to react, then opened her eyes and asked, "What did you say?"
"I said Darwin really broke off the engagement!" Ashton exclaimed.
Fiona sat up, put the call on speakerphone, and checked her Weibo. Sure enough, she saw the related hot search. Darwin had actually... followed through with it.
"It's really..." Fiona muttered.
"Why are you reacting like this? Aren't you upset?" Ashton asked.
Ashton, in a sense, had already been won over by Darwin now.
"I'm happy," Fiona lay back down, "I'm just still sleepy."
"That's how it is with pregnant women, always feeling tired!" Ashton paused for a moment, then asked, "Are you still keeping Darwin in the dark about the babies?"
"Let's talk about that when we get back to Bay City," Fiona replied, lying back down. "You can't just blurt it out casually!"
Ashton suddenly turned serious. "We need to create an original baby reveal, something he'll never forget in his whole life."
Fiona smiled, "And how do you define such a reveal?"
"Wait and see, I'll find some videos online who specialize in these things for you!"
Before Fiona could say anything, Ashton hung up the phone. She lay on the bed, gazing at the intricate patterns on the hotel ceiling.
"He really broke off the engagement..." she mumbled. "All for my sake."
She pulled the blanket up, covering her head. For a moment, she couldn't tell if she was going crazy with delusions or if Darwin had gone insane.
After a while, Fiona gently placed her hand on her abdomen, softly stroking it while saying, "Babies, it seems like your daddy is slowly becoming... a better person."
In one breath, Ashton sent Fiona over a dozen videos. She watched each one of them attentively. No matter how they were presented, every video touched her deeply.
There were several fathers holding their wives, crying like little children upon discovering they were going to be fathers.
For a while, she wondered what Darwin's reaction would be once he saw these videos. It was impossible to imagine.
After watching all the videos, Fiona was about to text Ashton. Suddenly, a call came from Darwin.
A smile immediately appeared on Fiona's face.
She answered, "Good morning~"
"What's so good about it? I already finished a round of meetings at the company," Darwin replied with a hint of irritation in his tone.
"I saw the cancellation of the engagement," Fiona said slowly.
"You saw it, and then what? I had to call you myself without any notice!" Darwin complained.
So, he was unhappy about that?
"I was busy with other things, planning to call you once I finished..." Fiona muttered.
"What could be more important than this?" Darwin asked in a deep voice.
Fiona smiled and said, "You'll know once I return to Bay City."
Darwin snorted coldly but then softened his tone, "Fiona, are you happy?"
"Yes, I am," Fiona sincerely replied.
"Good," Darwin responded with a smile. "Because there's a lot to handle here after the cancellation, just stay with Lady Rhoads for a few more days, and I'll come pick you up after I'm done."
"Alright," Fiona agreed. She wasn't a child; why did she need someone to pick her up? Besides, she didn't want to stay with Janna anymore. She planned to go back by herself, to give Darwin a surprise!
"You heartless person, why did you agree so quickly? Don't you miss me at all?" Darwin sounded displeased.
Fiona smiled, keeping her lips sealed without answering Darwin. After some time, Darwin had to attend another meeting. Once the call ended, Fiona thought to herself that even though it was the Ross family who proposed the cancellation, it surely caused some trouble for Solomon and the Solomons, right?
She needed to go back and help Darwin. After all, she still held the title of Mr. Solomon's secretary. She was a woman of action. With that in mind, she opened her suitcase and quickly packed her things.
Then, Fiona planned to go next door and tell Janna that she was planning to leave. But as soon as she stepped out, she found out that Janna had taken a call early in the morning and left with Stuart.
Fiona thought about her leaving for a moment. She decided not to rush it for the time being. Instead, she went out to buy a souvenir for her colleagues at the president's office.
On this winter morning, there was a thick fog. Janna’s car was parked outside West Mountain Tomb. She sat inside, hunched over with red eyes.
"Madam, it's done!" a young man and Stuart ran back.
Janna looked up abruptly, "Is it true... Is Jane really here?"
"Although we are not certain if it's the person you're looking for, there is indeed a Carla Woods here," the young man replied.
For the past few months, he had been investigating the whereabouts of Jane in Serene City. He searched the surrounding cemeteries thoroughly. All potential individuals had been ruled out.
Only the West Mountain Cemetery, where the last tomb remains, was left. The caretaker here is uncooperative and refuses to disclose whether there is someone named Carla Woods. So, under the guise of paying respects, he sneaked into the cemetery, confirming one tombstone after another. Indeed, he found Carla Woods.
Stuart helped Janna out of the car. She walked up to the entrance of the cemetery and suddenly asked Stuart, "Maybe we should just forget it. She wouldn't want to see me."
Stuart scratched his head and replied, "If you want to see her, then let's see her!"
Janna was quiet for a long time.
"What are you all doing here?" At this moment, the elderly caretaker noticed this group of people and sensed that something was off. Perhaps it was because the year was ending, but recently, there had been quite a few individuals sneaking into the cemetery to steal offerings!
"Hello..." the young man spoke.
"It's you! I already said there's no Carla Woods here!" The elderly caretaker recognized him at a glance.
At this specific time, upon hearing the caretaker's comment, Janna made up her mind. She took the flowers from Stuart's hands and handed them to the caretaker.
"Sir, I am Carla Woods' mother-in-law, and these are the flowers I bought for her. Could you please help me deliver them?"
The caretaker instinctively took the flowers. Then he muttered, "Mother-in-law..."
Suddenly, he realized, "Mother-in-law? So there are still living people in your family?"
When the elderly caretaker saw Janna’s attire, he knew she had been living well. In his mind, there appeared a subconscious image of little Fiona, crying desperately for her mother on her grandfather's shoulder.
