Chapter 191 A Fierce Confrontation
"What diamond?" Janna looked at Chicago with affection. "I bought a tiara that just happens to have a few diamonds on it, right Chicago?"
If the tiara was from Mrs. Janna, one could count on that tiara to be completely studded with diamonds. Each of the main stones must be at least ten carats.
"That's a bit much," Ashton mumbled.
"And you," Janna said with a disapproving glance at Ashton, "I haven't seen you in months, and look what you've become."
Ashton paused, taking in her current appearance. She had returned late and drunk the night before, exhausted and she fell asleep without even removing her makeup. Now, her eye makeup was smeared, the foundation was a mess all over her face, and her hair was a tangled lump...
"I'm hungover!" Ashton said, then turned to run upstairs, "Wait for me a minute!"
"My dear, make sure you don't end up like Ashton," Janna turned back to tease Chicago.
Chicago, with a dreamy smile, thinking about the wonderful dream she had last night, and as if afraid someone else might hear, whispered, "Grandma Janna, Chicago wants to find a handsome husband for Mommy, what do you think?"
Janna was taken aback but lightly slapped her knee and laughed, "Oh my darling girl, you think just like me! I've been trying to find a handsome husband for your mother for so long!"
Chicago's eyes immediately lit up, and it seemed like the two had a moment of telepathy.
But quickly, Janna's spirits seemed to dampen as she sighed, "But it's a pity, no matter how many handsome, talented young men I've introduced over the years, she won't even give them a glance! And then there's Dagmar, such a good man, and they grew up together..."
"Uncle Dagmar?" Chicago blinked.
She weighed 'Uncle' and 'Uncle Dagmar' as if on a scale. In about two seconds, 'Uncle' won. The reason was quite simple. Mommy had said that Dagmar was like a brother to her. That meant Dagmar could not possibly be Mommy's husband. So, 'Uncle' was the better choice!
Chicago grew more and more excited at the thought, almost as if her uncle would be getting married with her mom the very next day, her little feet wiggling uncontrollably.
"Uncle Dagmar is mommy's brother, silly," Chicago earnestly explained to Janna.
Janna lightly tapped Chicago's nose and teased, "Look at you, taking your mom's side! Do you want her to marry a handsome husband or not?"
"Of course, I do!" Chicago replied without hesitation.
She was about to spill the beans about her uncle's existence to Janna when Charles came down from upstairs.
Chicago was still mad at him and turned her head away, refusing to look at him.
Charles stood still, holding a small pad.
He had just received some pictures of kittens. And without guessing, he knew who sent them.
Rationally, Charles knew he shouldn't share the photos with Chicago to avoid her having more contact with that jerk.
Yet it was because of him that Chicago couldn't have her own little kitten.
"Want to see the kittens?" Charles asked.
Chicago was momentarily stunned, then quickly came to her senses.
"Let me see! Let me see!" she said as she scrambled up and ran over.
Janna raised an eyebrow, "Are you guys keeping a kitten?"
How could Charles possibly live with these furry creatures?
"Virtual pets," Charles corrected.
"That's good then," Janna said with a nod and a relaxed brow.
After Chicago viewed the photos, her mood soared.
She even considered inviting Charles to join them at the park.
Charles declined, opting to go back to his study and continue tinkering with his gift.
With her spirits lifted, Chicago momentarily put the idea of finding her mom a husband out of her mind.
Changing into her outdoor clothes, she merrily set off with Janna to the park.
At Solomon…
This week's routine morning meeting went on without Darwin and encountered a few hiccups.
It involved Miss Ford, the vice president of Sales.
Someone reported that Miss Ford had been accepting kickbacks at work, which was not particularly unusual in sales.
It was an unspoken truth understood by all.
But the nature of the accusations changed completely when someone presented evidence and brought the issue out in the open.
As Miss Ford listened to certain shareholders' reproaches, she seemed to grow weary of it.
She glanced at Lilian, with whom she'd had a dispute the day before, and thought to herself, "This incident just had to happen today."
It was obvious who was behind it.
"There's no need to argue," Miss Ford interjected impatiently.
An angry man glared at her, "Miss Ford, you made a mistake and still have the nerve to carry this attitude?!"
Miss Ford scoffed, "You all talk about ethics, but who among you hasn't taken larger kickbacks than me? Is the minor issue of my kickbacks really worth half an hour of debate during the meeting?"
It was true that Miss Ford had taken kickbacks.
But it was just a matter of accepting two designer bags from a partner company.
She had sent gifts in return as well.
"Don't spout nonsense!" the man said.
"You're well aware that I'm not talking nonsense. Each of you knows the truth in your hearts," Miss Ford replied as she removed her work badge and slapped it down on the table. "Which one of you doesn't live off the contracts I secure for us year-round? Now you sit here finding faults in my work? Have a look in the mirror and ask yourself if you deserve to. It's just a vice president title, right? I've had enough of it and you don't need to make a fuss about how to handle my mistake!"
"Miss Ford, there's no need to be so angry. We all want what's best for the company," Lilian said, looking troubled.
Miss Ford let out a cold laugh.
She was someone who never let an offense go unchallenged, and now that she was leaving, she pulled no punches.
"Miss Robbins, do you know why the veterans in the company, especially those who have dealt with Secretary Woods, have no respect for you?" Miss Ford asked with a smile.
The meeting room fell dead silent.
Lilian's face gradually turned pale.
"Because you're a dreadful person," Miss Ford continued, "Your talent for acting could have won you an Oscar, if only you'd been an actress. The Academy would regret missing out on you!"
"Miss Ford, I've never wronged you…"
Miss Ford wanted to call BS.
How many resources had Lilian snatched from others under her?
But she couldn't just say that.
Responding that way would make her fall into Lilian's trap.
Folding her arms, Miss Ford looked disdainfully at Lilian, "Miss Robbins, didn't I just tell you? It's because you're such an unpleasant person that you're disliked. It has nothing to do with whether you've wronged someone or not."
Lilian's face turned beet red.
"Ladies and gentlemen, before I leave, let me remind you that Miss Robbins has a knack for using others' hard-earned resources for her own projects. If one day she suddenly throws a dirty glance toward you, be very cautious and guard your resources, or you'll work for nothing and suffer the losses."
