Chapter 1500
"Charles has everything ready, even the wedding dress designer is set. So what am I supposed to do?" Fiona looked momentarily lost, then clapped her hands. "I can be Charlotte's family and help her get ready for the wedding!"
Darwin watched Fiona, who was practically bouncing with excitement.
It was rare to see her this happy, and it made him happy too.
"Then I'll join you!" Darwin intertwined his fingers with hers. "I'll write another check tomorrow. The one I just gave was Charles's wedding gift, and tomorrow's will be from the bride's family!"
That night, Charlotte stayed in Chicago's room.
With the lights off, Chicago scooted closer to Charlotte and asked the question everyone seemed to ask her. "Are you sure about this? I mean, I'm not doubting Charles—he's the best guy in the world, and marrying him is the right choice! But you're my best friend, and I want you to make decisions that make you happy."
Charlotte was deeply touched.
Chicago had always been someone who wore her heart on her sleeve, expressing her feelings openly and passionately.
Charlotte had always admired that.
"I'm sure, I've thought it through!" Charlotte turned to face Chicago in the dark. "Chicago, I like Charles. Marrying him and spending my life with him is something I never even dared to dream of."
"Why not?" Chicago's voice was thick with emotion. "You're amazing, why wouldn't you dream big? My mom and I both think Charles is lucky to have you!"
Charlotte couldn't help but laugh through her tears.
"That's because you love me. People outside don't see it that way."
"Who cares about them! If anyone talks trash in front of me, I'll shut them up!"
Charlotte laughed even harder.
She hugged Chicago gently. "Chicago, thank you."
"Stop, or I'll start crying." Chicago's voice was choked with emotion. "You and Charles better be happy, forever happy!"
"We will."
That night, they talked about all sorts of girly things.
Mostly, it was Charlotte doing the talking.
This was unusual, as Charlotte was usually the listener.
It wasn't that Chicago didn't have things to say.
She just didn't have many girly secrets.
It couldn't all be about unfinished drawings, right?
At the end of their conversation, Chicago said, "Charlotte, do you remember Ethan?"
"Of course."
"We found him," Chicago said softly.
"Found him? Where is he? Is he okay?"
Chicago nodded, staring at the ceiling. "He's doing great. Brady saw him at a party. He's a rising star now."
She paused for a few seconds. "And he's engaged to a wealthy family's daughter."
"He's so smart, it's not surprising," Charlotte said, then suddenly squeezed Chicago's fingers.
Chicago looked at her in the dark.
"Chicago, did you have a crush on him when we were kids?" Charlotte asked.
She hadn't understood it back then.
But now, thinking back to how upset Chicago had been over Ethan, maybe there had been something more.
Chicago thought about it seriously.
"Maybe, he was really good-looking."
"You and your mom are just the same, only caring about looks!" Charlotte teased, pinching her waist lightly.
Chicago immediately pinched her back.
Soon, they were laughing and rolling around together.
