Chapter 290 They Suspect You Hired a Hitman
Lilian stared at the line of text in the test results, her other hand lightly resting on her belly with an almost pathological smile playing on her lips. "Baby, did you like the voice on the phone just now? That was your daddy. Be a good little one and grow strong in mommy's tummy. Once you're born, mommy will take you to reunite with daddy."
A thought seemed to strike her, and her expression twisted into one of bitter resentment. "That wicked woman who wants to steal your daddy, mommy will take care of her before you're born. Luck can favor someone once, but not every time!"
At that moment, Lilian's phone buzzed again on the couch. She glanced at it and saw the caller ID: Anniston. She smirked disdainfully. Now that she was successfully pregnant, Anniston meant nothing to her.
Letting the phone ring for a bit, she languidly answered right before it was about to go to voicemail. "Lilian, what are you up to? Did you get the test results?" Anniston was incredulously shocked." should be "Anniston was incredulously shocked.
"Lilian's reminder jolted Anniston, who suddenly remembered the injustices she had suffered, the anger that had boiled inside her, and the priceless jewels and antique treasures." The mention of jewels and treasures seems out of context and requires clarification.
"I got them. The embryo has implanted successfully," Lilian replied.
Anniston's laughter erupted from the other end, grating on Lilian. What was there for her to be happy about, she wondered—the child was Lilian's and Darwin's, not hers. Did she really think Lilian would let her be the grandmother? Had she lost her mind?
"That's fantastic! I'll make arrangements now. Head to the place overseas I've set up for you to relax and focus on your pregnancy. Once the baby is born, we'll come back and deal a heavy blow to Darwin and that Chelsea!"
"Mr. Potter, aren't you aware of what's happening?" Lilian changed her tone, now somber and serious.
"What are you talking about?" Anniston sounded confused.
"I just got a call from Mr. Solomon asking about you. I was about to inform you."
"Cut to the chase. What's going on?"
"The Rhoads family suspects you hired someone to kill Chelsea and Mr. Solomon. They claim to have solid evidence. Darwin even said he thinks you've lost it. He's worried you might harm me too, after knowing I met with you a few days ago. He called and told me to stay away from you."
"I hired a hitman?" Anniston was dumbfounded.
She had indeed contemplated it. But regular hitmen couldn't touch Darwin, and she couldn't afford the fee for a top-tier professional.
"It's going down soon, the Rhoads are about to make their move," Lilian voiced her concerns. "I was just about to call you when your call came in. Mr. Potter, whether or not I go overseas is the least of my worries, but you need to lay low!"
"What do I have to hide from? I didn't hire anyone to kill," Anniston's voice dropped to a whisper, as though wary of eavesdroppers.
"I don't believe you did either, but they claim to have evidence," Lilian continued. "Think about it, have you been in contact with any shady figures lately?"
Lilian's reminder jolted Anniston, who suddenly remembered the injustices she had suffered, the anger that had boiled inside her, and the priceless jewels and antique treasures.
She simply couldn't reconcile with it.
At one point, indeed, she had inquired if anyone knew of a reliable assassin's network they could contact. Besides that, she had also researched on the internet.
"Are internet searches now considered evidence?" Anniston was incredulously shocked.
"You know how crazily infatuated Darwin is with Fiona, and now he's finally found an identical stand-in at a time when they're utterly smitten. Nearly getting killed, Darwin is your own flesh and blood, you know his temperament…"
"My own flesh and blood? He is no son of mine!" Anniston blurted out in anger, losing her composure.
Lilian was taken aback.
Realizing her slip, Anniston hastily corrected herself, "I mean, with the way he favors that old hag, he might as well be her real son!"
Though she recovered quickly, Lilian had already picked up on the slip.
"Mr. Potter, this is no time to lose your cool. Even without Darwin, don't forget Janna – she's a force to be reckoned with, and the internet is abuzz with stories of her doting on her granddaughter. She's convinced you're behind the attempted murder of her granddaughter, and I doubt she’ll let it slide without evidence."
Anniston had weathered many storms in the business world and had crossed paths with Janna a few times. She knew of Janna's ruthlessness. After listening to Lilian's words, the phrase 'better to err on the side of caution' flashed in her mind.
"I'll leave with you! Where are you? I'll send a car for you right now," Anniston couldn't abandon Lilian and her unborn child.
"We can't go together. Darwin, to protect me, has arranged several bodyguards. They're with me round the clock," Lilian said with a hint of helplessness, "You find a safe place to stay. I won't be visibly pregnant for several more months, so I'll keep watch over things here for you. Once it's safe, I'll come to you."
Lilian, don't try to pull a fast one on me. Remember, we're in this together!" Anniston knew that Lilian had a point; she needed someone to keep an eye on things here.
She couldn't afford to get Lilian entangled with her current situation.
Otherwise, it was a minor issue if Lilian ran into trouble, but losing the baby and thus the leverage over Darwin – that was the real disaster.
"Mr. Potter, if I were playing games, I wouldn't be telling you this,” Lilian's voice sounded hurt.
“Before I leave, I'll set up a safe for you with some money inside. Don't shortchange yourself, and take care of the baby.” Anniston's tone softened considerably.
“I will!”
After hanging up, Anniston immediately bought a plane ticket to leave the country.
To ensure her movements remained undetected.
Anniston, in one go, booked several tickets to different destinations with various airlines.
After securing the tickets, she inexplicably felt the need to check the outdoor surveillance.
Perhaps it was a guilty conscience.
Fiona was both amused and exasperated." - The dialogue tag does not match the dialogue. It would be better to show the emotions through action or description. In a panic, Anniston summoned the housekeeper, borrowed her clothes, and, feigning an old and hunched appearance, drove off in the housekeeper's grocery store's car through the side door.
After leaving home,
She didn’t have time to grab anything; she headed straight to the airport.
Taking the nearest flight, she left the country without delay.
At that moment,
Fiona was walking Chicago through the neighborhood park.
They couldn't go unnoticed, as Chicago seemed to command quite the presence there.
Everyone appeared to know her.
The weather had warmed up recently, and Chicago was breaking a sweat from all the running.
