Chapter 1230
Seeing Mike spot him, Burl waved, signaling for Mike to scram.
Mike sighed and cursed Darwin under his breath, 'Such a good family, all messed up because of you!'
The next day, Darwin woke up when the sun was already high in the sky.
He looked at the bright sunlight streaming through the window, blinked a few times, and then remembered who he was, where he was, and what he had to do today.
"Honey," Darwin instinctively reached out to hug the person next to him.
But he grabbed nothing. His remaining drowsiness vanished instantly.
Darwin sat up and headed to the bathroom.
No sign of Fiona.
He touched her side of the bed; it was cold.
He frowned and walked downstairs.
As soon as he reached the second floor, he heard Chicago's cheerful voice. "Charles, you're amazing! Charlotte, tonight you'll definitely catch the bug you want the most!"
Darwin took a few more steps down.
He saw the living room filled with camping gear, Fiona in casual clothes sitting on the sofa, smiling as she watched the kids excitedly discuss their camping plans.
Chicago was the first to notice Darwin.
"Dad!" she shouted happily and ran towards him.
Fiona also turned her head. "I was just about to go upstairs to wake you if you didn't get up soon."
"Sorry," Darwin said, holding Chicago's hand.
"No need to apologize, Dad. You work hard on business trips, so it's only right to rest well at home!" Chicago said, always considerate.
Darwin walked over to Fiona.
"Did you sleep well?" Fiona reached out her hand to him.
Darwin let go of Chicago's hand, held Fiona's, and nodded.
He had slept very well, not even a single dream, and felt much more refreshed than usual.
"That's good." Fiona's thumb gently stroked the back of Darwin's hand. "Let's have breakfast, and then we'll get ready to leave!"
Darwin smiled in response.
Burl came downstairs with his small bag just as everyone was about to leave.
"Uncle Burl, I thought you were sleeping in and wouldn't come." Chicago hugged Burl.
Burl picked her up. "How could I go back on my promise to you, baby?"
"That's not right!" Chicago pinched Burl's mouth. "Uncle Burl, you got it wrong again; now Melissa is baby!"
Burl helplessly agreed. "Alright, I got it. Melissa is the baby!"
"Good!" Chicago nodded.
Burl looked up and met Fiona's gaze.
These past few days, he hadn't spoken to her.
When he met her gaze, Burl felt like crying and immediately looked away. "Today, all the kids will ride in the same car with me. I'm the leader of Charlotte's group!"
Burl busily made arrangements.
Several cars drove out of Emerald Pool, heading grandly towards the campsite over 124 miles away.
Ashton held Melissa, standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, worriedly watching the convoy move further away.
Kenny came over and took the lively Melissa into his arms.
"Don't worry, Fiona has enough help, and the medicine Mr. Graham gave seems to be working well," he comforted gently.
Ashton nodded but couldn't help sighing softly. "Kenny, let's delay our plan to move to our own place. It's better to have more people around Fiona before she sends Darwin to closed treatment."
"Okay." Kenny had no particular preference for where to live, as long as Ashton was there. "The weather is nice today. After this, there will be weeks of autumn rain, and the temperature will drop significantly. How about we go to Solace Hills today?"
"Okay." Ashton agreed, then pinched Melissa's chubby cheeks. "Melissa, shall we take you to see your grandparents?"
