Chapter 26 Hathaway's Car Accident
Nobody was outside.
Harold had already bailed.
Darwin was stoked about it.
He shot a quick look at Fiona.
She trudged forward, eyes glued to the floor, face like a stone.
"Thought he had more guts," Darwin sneered.
Fiona didn't even flinch.
They headed to the elevator, one after the other.
Darwin's phone buzzed.
He glanced at it, and his face turned icy.
Anniston was calling.
He hung up right away.
The elevator doors slid open, and two kids burst out, playing and bumping into Fiona.
"Watch it!" Darwin yanked her into his arms.
"Sorry! The kids weren't looking!" The parent rushed to apologize.
Darwin's face was like thunder.
The two boys mumbled apologies too.
Fiona's face softened. "Be careful next time. If you hurt someone, your parents will be in deep trouble!"
"We get it," the kids muttered.
After the parent apologized a bunch more and scolded the kids, they left.
Fiona said, "Alright, let go."
Darwin's arm was still around her waist.
He hadn't even noticed until she pointed it out.
When she did, Darwin just held her tighter. "Nope."
Fiona went quiet.
What was his deal?
Before, even in front of people like Wyatt who knew about their relationship, he wouldn't show any affection.
Now that they were split, he started acting all clingy.
Was it 'cause she dumped him and he couldn't handle it?
Darwin held Fiona and nudged her into the elevator. "Wyatt's waiting, let's move."
He seemed pretty pleased with himself.
Fiona, on the other hand, felt weird. "Mr. Solomon, there are cameras in here."
"So what?"
"Didn't you say we should keep our distance where there are cameras?" Fiona shot him a glare.
Darwin frowned.
Yeah, he had said that. And it made sense.
Just then, Fiona's phone rang.
The caller ID said "Ms. Garcia."
All the feelings she had because of Darwin vanished in a snap.
"Who is it?" Darwin glanced at the phone and frowned.
Before picking up, Fiona said, "Your mom."
Darwin wanted to stop her, but it was too late.
"Ms. Garcia," Fiona answered, polite but cold.
"Put Darwin on. I know you two are together." Anniston's voice was ice-cold, like she wanted to strangle Fiona.
"Okay." Fiona handed the phone to Darwin without even looking at him.
Anniston's tone made her feel a sudden wave of shame.
Darwin took the phone. "Mom."
"Miss Ross was in a car accident. Get back here now!"
"Car accident?" Darwin let go of Fiona's waist.
The elevator had just hit the first floor.
Fiona let out a small sigh and stepped out.
She stood by the elevator, waiting for Darwin to give her phone back.
After a moment, she heard Darwin say, "I'll be right there."
Fiona's lips curled slightly.
She couldn't figure out what she was feeling.
Darwin walked out of the elevator and saw Fiona, his heart sinking for some reason. "Hand the project over to Wyatt and come back to Bay City with me."
Fiona reached out to take her phone back.
She looked up at Darwin, her eyes clear and untainted.
"No." She started to pull her hand back.
Darwin grabbed it. "You've already been threatened with death!"
"I'm not scared," Fiona said calmly, "If I can't handle this, how can I be the CEO?"
Darwin added, "Sweetie."
"Don't call me that!" Fiona shook off his hand.
Darwin was taken aback.
"Why are you going back to Bay City? Why are you taking me with you?" Fiona asked.
Darwin gave her a long look, then said coldly, "You're really ungrateful."
With that, he turned and walked away quickly.
Fiona stood there, thinking, 'This should be the last time, right? Darwin won't bother me again, right?'
Wyatt had picked a restaurant right next to the hotel.
He was already there.
He was shocked that Darwin was in New Port and with Fiona.
He knew Hathaway had already arrived in Bay City, and Darwin's family was gearing up for the engagement party.
They had even arranged the media, and the official announcement was imminent.
Wyatt was still mulling it over when Fiona arrived.
Wyatt looked behind her. "Where's Darwin?"
"He went back to Bay City." Fiona pulled out her laptop.
"I've already ordered the food. Let's eat first and then talk." Wyatt waved his hand.
Fiona's face looked really bad. She seemed sickly.
"Don't mean to pry, but are you two back together?" Wyatt asked.
Fiona looked at him. "Mr. Durham, that's a weird question. When was I ever with Darwin? How could we get back together?"
Wyatt was speechless.
Fiona had become quite sharp.
"Fiona, I really admire you," Wyatt said, pouring her a cup of water. "Whether it's the R&K matter or the overall planning of this project, I've reviewed it all. You're very capable."
Fiona said, "Cut to the chase. Who are you trying to impress with all this beating around the bush?"
Wyatt laughed.
"Alright, I'll be direct." He looked at Fiona. "Stop getting tangled up with Darwin. The marriage between the Solomon family and the Ross family involves significant interests. Both families value it highly."
"Wyatt, you overestimate me." Fiona smiled wryly. "I've been clear-headed these past five years. But you, you seemed confused I'm just Lilian's stand-in. You said it yourself, the marriage between Darwin and Hathaway involves significant interests. Why would he ruin that for me?"
"Well, he might not ruin it for you, but somebody might see you as an enemy ." Wyatt was concise.
Fiona looked away, lowering her eyes.
Wyatt had a point.
She didn't know Hathaway well.
But how many women could accept their husband being tangled up with another woman?
Even if Hathaway could tolerate it. Could the Ross family?
"I know what to do," Fiona replied calmly.
It seemed that she should leave Bay City after the New Port trip.
After dinner, Fiona routinely discussed the situation at the construction site with Wyatt.
Most of the time, it was Wyatt talking.
Fiona listened attentively and took a lot of notes.
"I heard you were threatened with death?" Wyatt asked as they were about to finish.
Fiona responded, "I don't think we need to have another meeting with Rufus. Let's call him and go directly to the site tomorrow."
