Chapter 1227

"Mom, you won't believe it! Yesterday, Godmother called Charles her son-in-law, and he turned bright red!" Chicago blurted out.

"You little brat, are you tattling?" Ashton reached out to hug Chicago.

Kenny, seeing this, quickly stepped in with a grin. "Hey, no heavy lifting, take it easy."

"Godfather, I'm not heavy!" Chicago protested.

But she didn't jump onto Ashton.

Fiona had mentioned that having a baby was really tough on the body, and Ashton had just given birth to Melissa not too long ago and was still recovering. Chicago needed to be careful around her.

"Sorry, Chicago, my bad. I apologize," Kenny said.

"For Melissa's sake, I forgive you!" Chicago said as she climbed into the car and settled into her car seat.

Fiona glanced at Darwin.

Seeing Darwin looking at Chicago with a loving smile, her worries eased a bit.

A few minutes later, Charles hopped into the car too.

Seeing Darwin and Fiona, the happiness on Charles's face was obvious. He had prepped a lot for the camping trip because this time, Charlotte was coming along too.

Lately, Charlotte had been super into insects, following Stuart around. So Charles had prepped an insect trap lamp to collect some mountain bugs for Stuart and Charlotte.

The lamp was all set.

Charles had thought Darwin and Fiona wouldn't be back for a while and that the camping trip would be canceled, which had bummed him out.

But now, seeing that they had really returned, Charles was genuinely happy.

After getting in the car, Chicago told Charles about Kenny calling her heavy but made sure to say she forgave him for Melissa's sake.

"Melissa sure has a lot of pull." Charles gave a thumbs up.

"Of course, she's the baby of the family!" Chicago said, patting her backpack. "I brought a gift for Melissa today too!"

Listening to Chicago, Darwin whispered to Fiona, "Chicago told me earlier she wants to get a gift for Melissa every day."

"Every day?" Fiona was surprised.

"Yep, every day," Darwin replied.

"Well, I'm curious to see how Chicago comes up with different gifts," Fiona said, genuinely intrigued.

Back at Emerald Pool, as soon as Fiona's car stopped, Chicago eagerly pushed open the door, shouting for Melissa as she ran towards the elevator.

By the time Kenny parked the car, Chicago was already in the elevator.

"Chicago is really sweet," Ashton said with a smile, then turned her gaze to Charles. "Charles..."

"Godmother, hold up!" Charles raised his hand to stop her and quickly walked ahead with his head down.

"You made Charles blush!" Fiona whispered.

Darwin, with his arm around her shoulder, chuckled.

Ashton watched this scene, feeling for a moment like everything before had been just a dream and that Darwin was perfectly fine.

But reality was reality. The bruises on Fiona's neck were still there. The spots where the concealer had rubbed off on her collar were clearly visible.

"Let's go upstairs. I'm really curious to see what gift Chicago prepared for Melissa!" Fiona said.

The four of them then headed to the living room.

As soon as they walked in, they saw Chicago kneeling on the carpet, pulling out a small clay octopus she had made.

"Melissa, I made this in art class, just for you!" Chicago said.

Melissa, sitting in Stuart's lap, drooled a little and smiled at Chicago.

Chicago couldn't resist. She put down the octopus, leaned in close to Melissa, and kissed her cheek. "Melissa, you're so cute. I love you the most!"
