Chapter 1413
A sharp scream pierced Darwin's ears. He frowned, raised his hand, and waved it dismissively.
"So loud." he muttered.
The voice suddenly became distant and ghostly.
"I'll be waiting for the day you destroy Fiona. I'll be waiting!" The voice was filled with desperate defiance.
"She will abandon you. She's always harbored resentment and hatred for you. If it weren't for Dagwood, she would never have married you!"
Darwin let out a sudden laugh. "You haven't heard the voice messages my wife sent me after I went missing, have you?"
The response was an even more distant scream.
"She loves me. The kids love me. I won't be abandoned by them. I'll recover soon and reunite with them. And you..." Darwin's face twisted with scorn. "You're just a figment of my fear. Now that I'm no longer afraid, you'll disappear forever."
"No... no!"
The world fell silent in the next instant.
Darwin lay back and exhaled deeply.
It seemed Hubert wouldn't need to do any further evaluations. He could go home.
Darwin thought about it.
He would never have to be separated from Fiona and the kids again.
Since the moment he chose to marry her, it seemed like they were always being pulled apart.
Goodbyes were too painful.
He liked sweet things. He would never let himself suffer again.
Another year-end approached.
The bulletin board was crowded with people.
Chicago, who had grown even more graceful over the past six months, stood in front of the board.
She had spent more time painting this semester, so her grades... Charlotte, standing beside her, found Chicago's name at ninth place in the entire grade.
"Wow, I'm amazing! I didn't even try that hard, and I still got ninth place!" Chicago laughed, patting her chest in self-praise before Charlotte could say anything.
She had slept in the art studio last night.
She couldn't get up in time, so she didn't even change her clothes, arriving at school in her paint-splattered overalls.
Her hands, face, and overalls were covered in paint.
Her classmates thought it was some kind of unique style and surrounded her, complimenting her for a while.
"Now that you mention it, it is pretty impressive," Charlotte agreed easily.
Then Chicago found Charlotte's name. "You're still first in the grade! Let's go celebrate with some good food!"
Before leaving the bulletin board, Chicago instinctively glanced at the grade group where Ethan used to be.
The top spot had changed hands again, and last year's top student had dropped to third place.
That student was now standing in front of the board, crying with their face in their hands.
Chicago looked away, linking arms with Charlotte and leaning on her. She thought to herself, "It's just first place. What's there to cry about?"
As she was thinking this, she spotted a familiar small figure.
"Melissa!"
She let go of Charlotte and ran over, beaming.
She eagerly took Melissa from Burl's arms, holding her like a precious treasure and rubbing her cheek against Melissa's.
"You look like a little paint-splattered cat," Burl said in shock, looking at Chicago, whose hair was also a mess.
Who would believe she was the daughter of a billionaire?
"I couldn't get up this morning," Chicago said, not minding the drool Melissa was getting on her face as the little girl giggled.
"All you see is Melissa. You don't even glance at us," Thalassa said, crossing her arms and huffing.
"I see you, I see you!" Chicago quickly went over to hug Thalassa, then asked Kenny, "Godfather Kenny, how's the research going?"
"Very well," Kenny replied with a smile.
"That's great!"
