Chapter 606 Kneel and Apologize
Tom's eyes widened in surprise, his anger evident. "We're simply reclaiming what rightfully belongs to us, how did it become extortion?" he exclaimed, his voice tinged with fury.
Mary trembled visibly, her fear palpable. "Darling, I've heard tales of these affluent folks and their formidable legal teams, capable of twisting the truth. We hold no power or influence..."
The man's brows furrowed deeply, his frustration evident. "Damn it! I need to track down that little rascal! Who does he think he is, framing me?"
Tom had always lived life on his own terms, never facing such a setback before.
"What about that little rascal? What do we do now?" Mary’s panic was rising. "She's likely just bluffing. She wouldn't actually call the police!"
Little did the man expect that, upon their return to the hotel, the police would indeed come knocking at their door.
Upon seeing this, Tom attempted to flee but was promptly subdued. The couple, accompanied by their sobbing children, were escorted to the nearby police station.
"We are truly innocent! Fiona and our nephew conspired against us. We are honest and law-abiding citizens, how could we resort to extortion? We've been wronged!" Mary continued to weep at the station.
Tom, usually arrogant, now appeared meek, embarrassed as he added, "Exactly! We can't let the wealthy bully honest folks like us, can we?"
"Get your act together. They've lodged a complaint with evidence of your extortion. We have phone recordings and chat logs." The interrogating officer reprimanded, playing the recording before them.
Mary paled upon hearing it. Tom instinctively denied, "That's not me speaking. She did it behind my back, I had no idea!"
Mary looked at her husband in shock, never anticipating he would abandon her and run when faced with danger.
"Whether you're involved or not, we will investigate!"
During the investigation, the couple was held in custody while their children were placed under welfare.
Three days later, they were finally released. In a meeting room, they met Fiona, whom they'd briefly encountered before.
"Ms. Chelsea! I know I was wrong. We no longer seek the money or the house, spare us! I have three children dependent on me!" Mary pleaded, collapsing to her knees.
Tom, mentally scattered, stood aside.
‘How had it come to this?’
Having escaped an impoverished village to a bustling city, he'd amassed wealth. But now, facing imprisonment and loss, he wondered where it all went wrong.
These past days had been torturous. Unfriendly police, his confrontational nature, and a bad mood led to altercations, even beatings.
He felt like he was losing his mind.
“It’s not me you should kneel to.” Fiona remained unmoved. “You drove "Ethan’s family to ruin, causing their deaths...”
“No, with the evidence I have, it directly led to their deaths, right?”
Fiona's words cut through.
Mary waved off desperately. "We may be bold, but we would never kill!"
"You might not, but him?" Fiona gestured to panicking Tom.
"Your daughter witnessed it. You tampered with the tires. The car crashed because of a burst tire."
"My daughter?" The man's eyes trembled with dissatisfaction.
Fiona continued, "She approached me, willing to spill the truth about Ethan's parents' deaths for money."
"Impossible!" The man denied vehemently. Surely, his daughter wouldn't betray him for a slap. It was just a ploy to sow discord.
Fiona played a video, clearly showing him tampering with the tire.
"Videos have timestamps, you can't deny it," Fiona said coldly.
"You..." Mary looked at her husband, cold sweat trickling down her back.
She knew neither of them were saints, but she'd never stoop to murder.
"That's your own sister! How could you?" She just wanted money.
After berating him, she turned to Fiona. "This has nothing to do with me!"
"Sister? Nonsense!" The man roared. "She promised to earn money for a house, but she ran off! We could've had more dowry if she hadn't!"
Fiona was stunned.
"She and her lover bought a house in Bay City. So, what if they spent on me? She refused, irritating me. I knew there'd be compensation after their deaths, so I tampered with the car! Death is freedom! I ensured her husband died with her so she wouldn't be lonely!"
"Damn you." Xavier couldn't bear it and slapped the man, knocking him down. Even Xavier, accustomed to violence, was furious hearing such words.
"Admitting to murder, great!" Fiona's face turned cold as she focused on Mary. "Now it's your turn."
"I didn't do it! I just wanted money!" Mary sobbed. "Money? How?" Fiona asked. Mary remained silent.
"If you won't confess, stay here. When you're ready to come clean, I'll come back." Fiona left, leaving Mary terrified.
She couldn't bear imprisonment anymore. "We forced our unstable sister to sign IOUs! We planned to demand money when their house was demolished..."
"They have already paid you over two hundred thousand, aren't you satisfied?" Fiona scolded. "Even after their deaths, you still want to harm their child?" "
