Chapter 379 Elementary Shenanigans
Jessie was a strong pup and made a rapid recovery after being in a critical state for a while.
By the afternoon, she was able to eat something.
The doctors said Jessie had been in great shape before the incident, with strong willpower to boot.
This combination of factors paved the way for a speedy recovery.
Watching Jessie go from knocking on death's door to slowly regaining spirit and vitality was a joy, especially for Chicago.
She had been burning the candle at both ends recently.
She would have breakfast then head straight to vet, not returning until it closed in the evening.
Of course, this also allowed her to skip her humanities classes.
Janna made a token protest, but she wasn't one to force Chicago to study.
She encouraged these classes out of concern that Chicago might fall behind and be ridiculed at school, damaging her self-esteem.
Once Fiona confirmed Jessie would pull through, she handed the pup over to Darwin and went back to work, racing to meet her project deadlines.
In the afternoon, after inspecting the construction site, Thalassa dropped by the vet to check on Chicago and the recovering Jessie.
She also reluctantly brought Burl, who'd been loitering at the vet, back to their house.
"Ever since Darwin saved the dog, Chicago's attitude toward him has changed. She's practically got stars in her eyes when she looks at him!" Burl grumbled to Thalassa as they got out of the car.
Thalassa just looked at him and let out a speechless laugh, lifting her hand to jokingly slap him on the head.
But Burl deftly dodged and grabbed Thalassa's arm instead. With a triumphant yank, he asked, "Do you think you’re so tall? How dare you try to look down on me?"
"Oh, you rascal!" Thalassa swung a foot at him.
Burl, slippery as an eel and chuckling, dodged from left to right, "Can't catch me! Can't catch me!"
Charles stepped to the edge of the staircase.
He sighed as he listened to the childish banter and play-fighting between his godmother and uncle.
He turned to give them a meaningful look.
As they felt Charles' gaze, Thalassa and Burl slowly realized they were both acting rather foolishly.
Burl let go first, and after Thalassa gave him a shove, she turned to Charles, "Your uncle's really got his head in the clouds sometimes. Hang around him too long, and it rubs off on you."
"Aren't you the one who eloped on a whim?"
They were about to go at it again when they caught Charles' eye and sheepishly held back.
However...
"Burl, did you get taller again?" Thalassa recalled being able to smack the back of Burl's head just a few months ago, but this time she missed by an inch, allowing him to evade.
"I’ve grown two inches," Burl boasted proudly.
Thalassa was genuinely impressed. "Wow, you shot up from 5'10" to 6'? That's a milestone worth celebrating!"
"Hehe~"
Charles watched them switch from fighting to laughter in an instant, shaking his head again.
As Charles was about to turn and head back, he felt a pair of eyes on him. He followed the gaze to a terrace a few houses down the block, where there stood a figure. As soon as the person noticed Charles looking back, they immediately ducked inside.
Charles furrowed his brow without even thinking about it.
At home, he called Stuart. "Can you check out the folks at 79? See if we've got some paparazzi sneaking around."
"Got it," came the reply.
Meanwhile, Aurora, who had been mistaken for a paparazzo, was excitedly flipping through a photo album. She had captured every moment of Thalassa's playful tussle with that man. She found their closeness nauseating and felt sorry for Kenny. She didn’t pay any attention to the child in the photos.
If she had zoomed in and taken a good look at the boy's face, she might have avoided an embarrassing social scandal later.
At the same time, Roy was cheerfully pouring tea for Fiona in a private dining room of a restaurant near RH Company. "I've sent the new packaging design to the factory. It'll be in use very soon!"
"I trust your efficiency," Fiona responded. "I didn't see Miss Susan today, though?"
Fiona was there for a meeting. Susan wasn't there, nor was James, and it seemed a few other familiar faces were missing as well.
"That's what I wanted to talk to you about. My aunt told me everything!" Roy whispered, lowering his voice, "Ms. Chelsea, I really admire you. You've only been in touch with RH Company for such a short time, but you managed to spot James's misconduct and secure solid proof! No matter what I said to my aunt, without that video, she would never have believed that her godson could do such a thing!"
"It was a serendipitous find," Fiona sipped her tea, waiting for Roy to continue.
"James has been arrested," Roy declared, punctuating each word, and then gave the table an emphatic pat. "My aunt personally called the police and presented the evidence that sent him away!"
"Really? I suppose Susan is heartbroken," Fiona remarked.
"Exactly!" Roy refilled Fiona's cup. "When they met, my aunt was distraught. James was on his knees in front of her, slapping his own face, banging his head on the ground, claiming he had been threatened, deceived, blinded by personal desires. My aunt didn't say much then. She just told him to get some rest. The moment he left, she called the cops!"
Roy's face was all smiles, "The investigation is still ongoing, but the evidence my aunt submitted is irrefutable. Once the case is closed, that scumbag is looking at a minimum of ten years."
"What about his company?" Laura interjected, "Wasn't he using RH Company's resources to set up a new place? I heard it was pretty big."
Roy slapped his thigh in excitement. "The day James got busted, my aunt swooped in with me to find the legal rep, laid out the pros and cons, and just like that, he signed the papers selling the dang company to my aunt! Once this lawsuit wraps up, we'll merge it with RH Company. It's the perfect time to expand our production line. We practically got it for free."
Roy chuckled. "He's lined his pockets with RH Company's cash for decades; it's hardly a giveaway."
As they enjoyed the moment, Fiona added, "Your aunt's a tough cookie, Roy. Have you ever thought about bringing her back on board to help run RH Company?"
Roy paused, caught off guard.
"She really worked for RH Company's best interests with no hidden agenda. Otherwise," Fiona smiled slyly, "If she wanted to compete for control back in the day, do you think you could have beaten her?"
Roy offered a wry smile, shaking his head without hesitation. "I wouldn't stand a chance."
"You should seriously consider what I'm saying. With someone like Miss Susan on board, I believe RH Company will reach new heights during its transformation."
