Chapter 455 Unveiling the Lies

"No... please no..."

Despair came crashing down on him.

Ken tried to dash forward to stop Janna from leaving, but he was restrained.

"Janna, you raised me; you taught me everything. How can you blame me for it all? Come back!!"

Alice stood up, her mind a haze, and looked at Ken again.

His features, marred by a week's downfall, bore no trace of the man who had once stirred her heart. Wrinkles of ugliness twisted his face horribly.

And with his bloated figure, Alice felt the urge to vomit.

"Ken." She lifted her chin and called out to him.

Ken turned, his gaze towards Alice filled with resentment.

"You're just a man-child who'll never grow up."

Enraged, Ken roared and lunged at Alice, but again, he was pulled back.

Alice wasn't done yet. She kept thinking about who to blame for her downfall.

She had killed Charles, her steadfast ally. That was some form of revenge.

But it wasn't enough.

Not at all.

If it weren't for Ken's uselessness and incompetence, she wouldn't have fallen this low.

So he had to pay, too.

"Since we probably won't see each other again, I might as well reveal a secret," Alice said, staring at Ken with a smile. "I lied to you."

"What did you lie about? When have you not lied to me?" Ken bellowed.

Alice sighed, a fake smile plastering her face. "About Jane..."

Ken's expression froze, his pupils shaking violently.

"She was lucky, dying early, not having to see you like this," Alice said with clear disgust. "I wonder if she still loved you when she died."

"What are you talking about, you vile woman! What nonsense are you spewing?!" Ken shook all over, his eyes bloodshot with anger.
Back in the day, Alice had bluntly told him that Jane had only married him for the sake of the Rhoads family fortune, not out of love. She was smitten with her childhood sweetheart, not him.

Ken, at that time, was a handsome, wealthy man.

Everyone seemed to idolize him.

How could he accept that his wife didn't love him?

After several encounters where he had seen Jane meeting with her childhood love, he started to believe Alice's words.

"Yeah, you're out of the loop. Jane, that two-timer, she was madly in love. She told me she's had a crush on you since you were kids. She said she had never seen a cuter kid than you. Do you know why she ditched her passion for art and took up business instead? Because she knew you, you goof, couldn't support the Rhoads on your own. She wanted to help you!" Alice clapped her hands, bursting into raucous laughter. "But you thought she was out to steal your thunder, so you hated her guts!"

Ken's shouting stopped.

He just stood there, stunned.

Images of Jane flickered through his mind like a slideshow, reminding him of his deep love from their younger days.

"That day, did you really drug her?" Ken asked.

"Of course, but I was worried she was too into you, so I doubled the dose!" Alice spoke irritably. "It was so intense; how come she didn't miscarry? If Chelsea had died, all would have been fine. Life is so unfair! Everything gets handed to that Jane!"

Alice kept talking.

Ken couldn't hear anymore.

A shrill ringing filled his ears.

The images in his mind sped up.

They finally stopped.

On Carla Woods' grave, that unsmiling face.

Janna had given him the address to find Carla Woods.

That year, driven by some inexplicable force, he went to Serene City behind Alice's back.

Drawn to the cemetery.

He looked at her, spewing nothing but curses.

Cursing her ambition, her betrayal, even cursing the birth of a child that should never have come into this world.

Leaving the cemetery, he viciously snapped the fresh flowers left by someone against her tombstone.

He had been wrong...

All so wrong...

"Ken!" Alice had been talking non-stop, but seeing no reaction from Ken, she suddenly shrieked.

Ken snapped out of it.

He looked at Alice.

Seeing his attention, Alice laughed bitterly. "Janna always says that if Jane were here, you wouldn't be living like this. Now, do you get why?"

"I..." Ken was heartbroken.

He wanted to say something,

But then he caught a glimpse of his haggard, aged reflection in the glass.

A sudden memory hit him.

On the night of their wedding, he had asked Jane, "Do you like me?"
Jane had just finished showering, her black hair cascading down over her pristine shoulders like a waterfall. When she smiled, a dimple twinkled at the corner of her mouth. She leaned close to him; her eyes filled only with his reflection.

She responded, "I do like you."

"What do you like about me?" he probed further.

Taking the initiative, Jane planted a kiss on him, her cheeks flushing red as she replied, "I like that you're handsome, Ken. You're the best-looking guy out there."

"Handsome..."

Suddenly, Ken covered his face with his hands.

He no longer felt handsome.

"What are you doing?" Alice asked, watching Ken in perplexity. "Aren't you going to yell at me? Lose it with rage?"

Why was he acting like this?

"I'm not handsome anymore..."

Ken muttered in fear, bolting towards the door like a man fighting for his life.

Alice, seeing this, broke free from the guard's grasp and rushed after him, grabbing Ken. "Ken, I lied to you! Everything about Jane - it was all me! Do you hear me?!"

"Jane..." Ken's voice was low, his hands trembling.

"I can't let Jane see me like this. I'm not good-looking, she won't love me anymore! Let go!!" With those words, he shoved Alice aside and dashed out the door.

Alice collapsed onto the floor in a heap.

She sat stunned for what felt like an eternity.

She had always believed snatching Ken from Jane was her proudest achievement.

But...

At that moment, Alice brutally realized Ken had never loved her.

Perhaps his choice to be with her was just a vendetta against Jane, a retaliation for not being loved by her.

For years, he was deceiving her and lying to himself.

Now, suddenly faced with the truth of the past, he couldn't keep up the pretense...

Alice let out a bitter, short laugh, then began to hit herself in a frenzy of utmost fury.

She hadn't stolen Ken away!

She hadn't stolen Ken away!

What had she won in her life?

Her biological father chose Jane over a relationship with her!

Ken, the fool she thought loved her, had Jane hidden in his heart all his life!

In the end, she was left with nothing, neither wealth nor love.

And now she had to confront retribution from Janna, the nature of which she didn't even know.

"It's not fair!" Alice cried out in desperation, pounding the ground. "Why does it have to be me who suffers like this? Why?!" "
