Chapter 372 Dad's A Superhero

"Pardon my frankness, but if it really was your granddaughter, I can’t believe she would poison a little dog that kept your wife and you company. An act like that is despicable and malicious," Darwin said sternly.

Mr. Bob exhaled a weary sigh. "She grew up abroad and was never that close to us. We wouldn't even be in touch if she hadn't moved back for work..."

Family matters were not something Darwin wanted to meddle with, so he let it be.

"I'll find a way to get the puppy treated. You should take your wife home to rest. I'll stay here with Chicago."

"But that doesn't seem right..." The old man began to protest.

He could have let a healthy dog go, but how could he impose on Chicago and her father with Jessie in this condition?

"It's alright. We’ll just have to agree that Jessie is with us now." Darwin paused for a moment, then said, "Besides, Grace doesn't look so good. How could we let her stay here?"

Darwin's words struck a chord with Bob.

He looked up, his eyes wet with tears, peering inside, before ultimately accepting Darwin's suggestion.

Before leaving, Darwin played it diplomatically but firmly. "Mr. Bob, since Jessie was, after all, legally yours, my lawyer is waiting outside. We need you to sign a deed of gift to avoid any future disputes. It's for everyone's benefit, Jessie's included."

Bob was taken aback for a moment.

Then he understood. The 'disputes' probably referred to what Chicago's dad was worried about...

"That makes sense. We understand!" Grace was quick to respond.

Soon, Bob and Grace left.

The lawyer waiting outside handed the contract to Darwin.

"The dog looks like it's on its last legs, Mr. Solomon. What brings you here?" the lawyer asked, puzzled.

After reviewing the contract, Darwin's expression was nonchalant as he handed it back. "She'll make it through."

For most people, Jessie's fate would have been sealed when they were faced with expensive vet bills.

But now, Jessie belonged to Chicago, and her father would spare no expense to keep her alive.

At that moment, Thalassa ran in.

"Weren't we supposed to keep Jessie at Kenny's for a while? I was waiting for her, but I suddenly heard that she’s been poisoned. What's going on?"
P
"Keep it down. Don't scare Chicago," Darwin said in a stern voice.

Thalassa didn't listen and walked inside.

Standing outside Jessie's room, she saw Chicago perched on a stool, talking to Jessie.

Thalassa's heart clenched.

She pushed the door open.

Chicago turned her head at the sound.

When she saw Thalassa, the facade she'd maintained all morning collapsed.

She hopped off the stool and ran to Thalassa.

Thalassa held her tightly.

Chicago clung to her neck. "Godmother, is Jessie going to die?"

"No, she won't!" Thalassa said, pointing to Darwin. "Your dad is like a superhero. Even the Grim Reaper would have to bow to him. Now that he’s here, Jessie will be fine."

Darwin was speechless.

When Chicago heard Thalassa's words, she looked at her with a sad, hopeful expression.

In that instant, Darwin thought, even if Death itself showed up, there was no way he would let Jessie die.

"That’s right!" Darwin replied earnestly. "Have you forgotten about the kitten? Didn't I save her? She's plump and healthy now!"

"Yeah!" Chicago suddenly felt a surge of confidence and nodded vigorously.

After that, Darwin had his people reach out to the best veterinarians in the area, calling in everyone who could make it.

Meanwhile, at RH Company...

Roy poured tea for the white-haired elderly woman sitting across from him with a smile plastered on his face. "As you can see, Aunt, the company reform is pretty much a done deal. I know what you're thinking. You're worried that RH Company will lose its essence under my leadership. But you really don't have to worry about that..."

"You’re bringing in a bunch of foreigners to transform a traditional business, and you tell me it won't change? Who are you trying to fool? I've watched you grow up, Roy. I know your moves before you even make them! If you think you can let capital erode the legacy our ancestors left behind, you've got another thing coming!" Susan rolled her eyes, finding her nephew's nonsense utterly unbelievable.

Susan was a highly capable woman, even more so than Roy and his father.

She had turned the tide during RH Company's toughest times.

It was a shame that her father was unwilling to pass the business on to her because she was a daughter, even if she chose to never marry or have children,.

Otherwise, why would she be running herself ragged worrying that her nephew might sell the business at her age?

"Our contract has already been signed, and production has stopped because we're missing the new packaging. You know how much we're losing every day we're idle," Roy said earnestly. "Aunt, I admit I'm not as capable as you, but the team we've hired is the cream of the crop! I've shown you their stellar reputation."

"I've told you, how can foreigners possibly do a good job planning a business in Armie Country? It's just not in their DNA!" Susan snapped. "And that woman is just a foreigner wrapped in an Armie Country skin. Do you think I don’t know about her achievements? She's an heiress of the Rhoads family. Those impressive credentials were bought and paid for by her grandmother just to gild her resume!"

Roy was at a loss for words. Some folks just wouldn’t listen...

Just then, a saving grace with a delightful voice came through the door. "Miss Susan, if Miss Janna heard you, she'd probably roll up her sleeves and want to settle this in person."

Roy quickly stood up.

Fiona entered with her team in tow.

"Miss Rhoads, you’re finally here. My aunt can be a little harsh, but she's got a good heart with no ill intentions," Roy said with a smile plastered on his face. "Please, have a seat!"

Fiona sat down with an easy grace.

"Roy, in the business world, you can't be too soft-hearted," Fiona remarked, looking at Susan.

Susan had only seen Fiona's photo once.

There was something instantly off-putting about her. Rumors had swirled about her overseas dalliances with a string of high rollers.

And now, she had suddenly been hitched to Darwin.

Darwin’s reprehensible character was known throughout Bay City and the capital's circles. He was a man who showed no respect for his elders, and had brazenly rejected the family business he was born into, insisting on starting his own company, only to shamelessly attempt to buy out his own inheritance.

It was nothing short of betrayal!

What did it say about Miss Rhoads that she had eloped with such a man?

She wouldn't spare Fiona a moment's attention.

Unperturbed, Fiona shifted her gaze back to Roy and continued, "Roy, your aunt is a legend in the business world. RH Company survived turbulent times and thrived and grew largely thanks to her efforts. You really should listen to what she has to say."
