Chapter 1234

Stuart somehow got wind that the chestnut tree was bearing fruit.

He headed to a nearby village, borrowed some tools, and spent the whole morning picking chestnuts with the kids.

In the afternoon, Fiona called Chicago and Charles over, "Don't run off everywhere, play with your dad."

"Kids should play with kids, and Dad should play with you, Mom," Chicago said.

Normally, Fiona would have laughed, but not today.

Watching Chicago run off again, Fiona felt a pang of sadness.

Chicago couldn't stand being away from Darwin. She couldn't even eat well if she didn't see him for a day.

Sending Darwin to the lab next, with no clear return date, how heartbroken would Chicago be?

Two happy days flew by quickly in the mountains and streams.

By four-thirty in the afternoon, everyone packed up the tents, cleaned the site, and reluctantly started the journey back.

On the way back, Chicago and Charles didn't sit with Burl but with Fiona and Darwin.

"The caretaker said it snows here in winter." Leaning against the car window, Chicago let the wind blow across her face. "Mom, Dad, can we come back when it snows? The caretaker showed me pictures of little squirrels he took last year when it snowed; they were so cute!"

"Sure, but there are other places with even more beautiful snow; we'll take you there next time," Fiona replied gently.

"Oh, that reminds me!" Chicago looked at Darwin excitedly.

"Dad, don't you remember? When we first met, you told me about skiing and showed me a video of you skiing, it was super cool! When your leg gets better, can you teach me to ski?" Her eyes sparkled.

Darwin looked at Chicago's expectant eyes.

His left leg was still very heavy.

However, he nodded. "Sure, I'll get better quickly."

"Yay!" Chicago was overjoyed. "Once I've learned, I can teach Melissa when she grows up."

"Didn't you say you wanted to give Melissa a gift every day? Yesterday it was a pretty little stone, what about today?" Fiona asked.

Chicago replied, "Today it's a super beautiful leaf! When we get home, I'll make it into a leaf specimen and put it in a beautiful frame!"

Fiona thought she was just having a momentary interest, but Chicago was quite serious.

Watching the navigation, getting closer and closer to Emerald Pool, the dark clouds in Fiona's heart loomed again.

In fact, among the whole group, except for the kids and Darwin, no one had a clear sky over their heads; everyone knew what going back meant.

By the time they reached Emerald Pool, it was completely dark.

The servants had already prepared dinner.

Ashton and Kenny were also waiting at home.

After getting home, Chicago quickly washed her hands and changed clothes, then went to see Melissa.

"She really loves Melissa." Fiona smiled at Ashton.

Ashton smiled, a bit helplessly.

Fiona didn't blame her.

During dinner, Fiona told Charles and Chicago about the business trip with Darwin the next day.

Chicago was a bit disappointed. "How long will you be gone?"

"Not long," Fiona replied.

In the past, at times like this, Chicago would be so sad she couldn't eat.

However, now it was different.

She had grown up and become much stronger.

Although sad, she still nodded obediently. "Mom, Dad, don't worry about me and Charles; just focus on your work!"
