Chapter 1368
A loud bang echoed through the room.
Wyatt shot up, wincing and grabbing his back.
"Seriously, man up!" Janna snapped. "You had sixteen years with your ex, and you blew it. Now she's hitched to Alexander, and you're crying about it? Pathetic!"
"Grandma, he was coughing up blood earlier and almost died in the ICU. Cut him some slack!" Fiona chimed in.
Janna just snorted.
Wyatt twisted in pain before collapsing back into his seat.
"You're right, Grandma Rhoads!" he exclaimed.
They dove back into their deep conversation.
Fiona couldn't stand to watch.
It was about time.
Ashton needed to head to the hospital to be with Grandma Carey.
Fiona made sure they didn't drive themselves; she had the driver take them.
Kenny had been behind the wheel most of the time lately.
He was beat.
Once they left, Fiona headed back to the living room.
The kids were huddled together, chatting about something.
Janna and Wyatt were still deep in conversation.
Fiona walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, sank into her recliner, and asked Lyold to pour her a cup of hot mulled wine.
After a bit, Rose came over.
"Did you enjoy your meal?" Fiona asked gently, glancing at her before looking back at the distant trees.
"Yeah, your chef is amazing." Rose sat down on the bench next to Fiona. "Mrs. Solomon, your home is nothing like I imagined."
"How so?" Fiona asked lazily, signaling Lyold to pour Rose a cup too.
Rose took the steaming mulled wine.
She thought for a moment and said, "The Solomon family always seemed so strict. My mom said it was always so lifeless."
Fiona lightly clinked her glass against Rose's. "But this isn't the Solomon family."
Rose looked a bit surprised.
"This is Darwin's and my home." Fiona's eyes softened. She'd had a bit to drink at dinner, and now her usually sharp gaze was softened by a warm, rosy hue.
Rose didn't quite get the difference.
But she didn't say anything.
Fiona slowly turned her gaze back to the window, lazily leaning back in her chair. "I've read Aiden's diary."
Rose stiffened, her body tensing.
"I know how much the Solomon family hurt him and Darwin, so I'm taking Darwin away." Fiona's tone was steady, slow but firm.
"Away?" Rose asked.
"Taking Darwin away from the nightmare Brooke created and back to me," Fiona replied slowly. "He'll never go back to the Solomon family you mentioned."
Rose lowered her eyes, her expression a mix of emotions. "When I was little, I heard my mom say Marisole once said something similar," Rose said, tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "She mentioned it to Grandma Mitchell."
Fiona glanced at Rose again. "Marisole and I are nothing alike. No one can take my lover from me. If anyone tries, I'll make sure they regret it."
Rose nodded slightly. "Now that Grandma Mitchell is gone, no one would dare."
"Good." Fiona looked out the window again. "Rose, do you know that in this world, what you gain and lose is all because of your own choices?"
Rose's grip on her wine glass tightened.
"Take Wyatt, for example," Fiona continued. "He had the right answer in front of him for sixteen years, but he kept making the wrong choices until he lost his lover and almost his life."
"And then there's my dear Ashton. She chose Kenny over a jerk, and now she'll never know the taste of bitterness in her life."
