Chapter 1148
Yet, Darwin appeared perfectly normal.
Darwin noticed her quietness and figured she was still ticked off about last night.
"Babe, I was wrong," Darwin said, reaching for her hand.
His hand was ice-cold.
Fiona glanced down, her eyes landing on his wrist hidden by his long sleeves.
"Let's talk upstairs," she said, yanking her hand away and heading for the stairs.
Back in the room, Darwin asked, "Did you eat? Lyold saved some dessert for you; I'll grab it."
He felt uneasy as he closed the door.
"No need," Fiona replied.
"Darwin, you were gone all day. Where were you?" she asked, straight-up.
Darwin looked caught off guard. "I had some stuff to handle."
"What kind of stuff makes you leave at four or five in the morning?" Fiona's voice got louder. "Don't lie to me!"
Darwin's face changed.
He stepped forward, trying to hold her hand. "Don't be mad; I'll explain."
"Wait." Fiona went to the bedside and picked up a half-empty pill bottle. "Why are so many pills gone? Did you take them all?"
Darwin quickly shook his head. "After our fight last night, I felt off. My hand shook, and I spilled them. I flushed them down the toilet."
"Really?" Fiona frowned. "These pills need precise doses; too many can be dangerous!"
"Yes!" Darwin nodded quickly. "If you're worried, we can get a blood test right now!"
Actually, Fiona figured that he could drive over a hundred kilometers because he didn't take the pills.
"It was my fault; I should've told you," Darwin kept apologizing. "Don't be mad."
"I'm not mad," Fiona said, looking at him. "I'm really worried about you!"
"Don't worry, I'm fine." Darwin gently hugged her. "I went out early because a kid I met in North Alabama called for help."
"A kid from North Alabama?" Fiona hadn't heard of him.
"The one who almost got hit by a bike," Darwin explained. "I saw him later at the Walker family's place."
"A guest of the Walker family?" Fiona asked.
"Yes," Darwin nodded.
"What happened to him? Is it serious?"
Darwin replied, "I'm not sure, probably family issues. When I found him, he was badly beaten."
Fiona connected Darwin's rescue today with this incident.
"Families linked to the Walkers are respectable. How could there be domestic violence? It's disgraceful." She looked disgusted. "Which family?"
Darwin was stunned.
Though he met Rex many times, he never asked about his family.
"I don't know," Darwin said, shaking his head. "I lost my phone, otherwise I could ask."
"How did you lose your phone?" Fiona asked.
Darwin sighed. "I was with him all day and lost track of time. When I realized I hadn't messaged you, I hurried to call, but I dropped my phone in the lake. I tried to get it back but couldn't."
Fiona was silent.
So, he was soaking wet because of this?
This was too absurd.
"Wait, were you in the lake for a long time?" Fiona grabbed his injured wrist. "How's the wound?"
Before she could lift his sleeve, Darwin pulled his hand back and stepped away.
"The wound's healed; it's fine; no need to look!" he said.
