Chapter 433 Taking Down Janna
Many familiar with the Rhoads family's enterprises had some recollection of Dagmar. Dagmar was their leading figure over the past few years as the Rhoads family's health group became more established. Janna, who seldom attended public events, was often accompanied by Dagmar whenever she did.
Many high-ranking members of the Rhoads family speculated that Dagmar would likely be Chelsea's fiancé or even her husband. So, Dagmar's appearance during Ken's live broadcast—to clarify the situation—shocked the entire Rhoads family.
The broadcast lasted for twenty minutes. For the first ten minutes, Dagmar provided a detailed account of Janna's sudden illness and the course of treatment. In the remaining time, the camera followed Dagmar into a VIP Ward area. After navigating through several corridors, they arrived outside a particular room. This room resembled an ICU room, complete with a large window.
Through that window, the livestream captured Janna in the hospital bed, her body laced with tubes. Considering the medical devices by the bed, it was clear that Janna was still alive.
"At present, our team is designing a more effective treatment plan for Janna with the goal of her swift recovery," Dagmar stated with a steady demeanor, gazing expressionlessly at the camera. "This concludes the update addressing the recent speculations about Janna Rhoads's health."
After that, the camera shifted away from Dagmar, panning to Alice and her husband, who watched Janna in the hospital room, sobbing inconsolably.
Alice quickly dabbed her eyes dry, feigning shock. "I hope none of you in the audience will be too hard on Chelsea. She acted that way because she was worried about her grandmother," she said.
"It's not about the inheritance, definitely not. She's already so successful and knows how to make money. Solomon's company is a major corporation..."
Darwin turned off the live stream. He couldn't stand Alice's pretense.
Later, he turned to Fiona with a complex expression. "Who would've thought that Dagmar would form an alliance with those two?"
Fiona glanced at him.
Darwin felt an inexplicable pang of guilt. Dagmar's sudden break from the Rhoads family and alliance with the conniving Ken had its roots in his actions.
"Burl, do we have the IP address yet?" Fiona asked, turning to Burl.
"Damn it!" Burl slammed his keyboard in frustration.
"What's wrong?" Fiona stood up and approached him.
"The video wasn't a live stream; it was prerecorded," he admitted, exasperating, running his fingers through his hair. "I only traced the streaming service to an office building, not the location shown in the video."
Fiona's brow furrowed slightly; then she laughed mockingly. "Ken and Alice are not fools! They won’t reveal the hospital's location because they know I've got a top-notch hacker on my team."
The mentioned hacker, agitated, exclaimed, "Why, Dagmar, why?"
He slammed the desk again.
"We've lived together like a family for years; I treated him like my brother..." Burl's voice choked with emotion. "What grudge could be so deep that he'd harm his family? How can he face Charles and Chicago now?"
Fiona's hands clenched into fists. "I hardly slept last night; I'm exhausted. I'm going to lie down for a bit." She left the room abruptly.
Burl glanced at the closed door and then, impulsively, at his brother-in-law. "Aren't you going to check on her?"
Darwin let out a self-deprecating laugh, eyes downcast. "Right now, she probably doesn't want to see me."
Inside the bedroom, Fiona stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing out over the majestic city, haunted by childhood memories of playing with Dagmar in the backstreets.
Dagmar had always been clean-cut, more charming than any boy in the old neighborhood. He was always smiling and would often conjure up her favorite cakes and candies.
When her mother was upset with her for overindulging in sweets and playtime, Dagmar defended her.
He had a way of cheering people up.
After just a few words, Mom would burst into laughter, and the spanking was quickly forgotten.
Dagmar held a significant place in her fond childhood memories.
So, even after watching the live broadcast, Fiona couldn't bring herself to believe that Dagmar could betray her and harm Grandma.
Fiona didn't want to get tangled in her wild speculations.
She took out her cell phone and dialed Dagmar's number immediately.
The phone rang for a long while, eventually cutting off to voicemail.
Persistence took hold, and Fiona dialed again.
She was waiting for an answer.
It wasn't until the third attempt that the call was finally picked up.
"Dagmar, where are you? I need to see you," Fiona said as soon as the call connected.
A pause lingered on the other end.
A light chuckle from Dagmar followed. "Mrs. Solomon, on what grounds do you wish to see me? And for what reason?"
Fiona was momentarily stunned.
The laughing Dagmar on the line felt strangely unfamiliar to her.
"What exactly happened to Grandma?" Fiona asked with a weighted tone.
"I've explained the situation during the live stream; if you didn't understand, you could replay the recording," Dagmar answered formally.
"You know that's not what I'm asking," Fiona's voice carried a hint of desperation. "Dagmar, what's going on? Is it because of my marriage to Darwin?"
"Mrs. Solomon, I've simply changed jobs," Dagmar's voice grew colder. "If you're fishing for a patient's confidentiality, I'm sorry, but I have nothing for you. If there's nothing else, I'm hanging up now; I have work to do."
"Dagmar!"
Fiona called out again in disbelief.
On the other end, there was only a brief pause before the line went dead.
When she called back, all that greeted her was the chilling tone of a disconnected line.
She hesitated for a moment.
Still, Fiona composed a text message and sent it.
"Is it Chelsea's number?"
Dagmar stood on the balcony, staring at the text on his phone with a shadowy expression.
When he heard Alice's voice, he deleted the message and glanced at her. "Why ask when you already know the answer?"
Alice's lips curled into a smirk. "We've come this far; you're not getting cold feet, are you?"
"You had me do the live stream to clear things up for you, effectively cutting off my retreat," Dagmar said with a hint of impatience, "We've reached the point where you can stop probing."
"Alright." Alice shrugged. "The shareholders' meeting is already in the bag. After the broadcast, the few who were willing to back Chelsea have made it clear they're now siding with my husband."
"Congratulations!" Dagmar responded coolly.
"Congratulations!" Alice said seductively. "Now that things are settled, holding on to Janna is a liability. Let's take care of it tonight." "
