Chapter 34 You Crossed the Line

No matter what Wyatt was up to, Fiona was still super grateful.

All these years, being Darwin's secretary was a drag. No matter how hard she worked, people always gave Darwin the props.

This was one of the rare times someone actually had her back.

Wyatt was feeling pretty good too.

He finally saw a real smile on Fiona's face.

After lunch, Fiona was heading back to the city.

"Mr. Durham, most of the issues are sorted. The rest is on you." She switched back to her business mode, all distant and stuff.

"Heading straight back to Bay City?" Wyatt asked.

"Evening flight," Fiona replied.

Wyatt grinned.

He felt a bit uneasy.

Why was she in such a rush to get back to Bay City?

Who was she meeting up with?

"Ms. Woods, I hope you took my advice to heart," Wyatt couldn't help but say.

Fiona glanced at him, too lazy to explain more.

Who knew whether he would tell Darwin her plan?

Wouldn't that slow down her escape?

"Okay," she responded half-heartedly and reached out to open the car door.

Wyatt saw this and immediately helped her open the door.

"I'm serious." He held the door, looking all serious.

"Mr. Durham, you're too kind. I was just doing my job." Fiona paused. "If Mr. Solomon knew I was in contact with you privately, he wouldn't be happy."

Wyatt's hand froze.

Fiona then closed the car door.

The car sped away.

Wyatt stood there, getting a face full of dust.

He raised his hand to wave it away.

Not long after, Darwin's call came.

Wyatt glanced at it and answered without much expression.

"I heard things over there have been resolved?" Darwin asked.

Wyatt vaguely heard Anniston's voice in the background. "The media has been notified. The official press release will be out tomorrow."

"So soon, are you announcing the engagement?" Wyatt answered out of nowhere.

"Yeah. Hathaway and I have agreed to get through these formalities quickly so as not to delay our future plans," Darwin said, "What about Fiona?"

Wyatt didn't answer.

Darwin thought the signal was bad. "Wyatt?"

"Darwin, stop bothering Fiona," Wyatt said in a deep voice.

This time, it was Darwin's turn to be silent.

Since Wyatt had started, he decided to say it all in one go, "Didn't Fiona say that day? Her mom was driven to death by a mistress. She'd rather die than be a mistress in someone else's marriage. You're about to announce your engagement, so let Fiona go."

"Wyatt." Darwin interrupted coldly. "You've crossed the line."

Wyatt felt a chill down his spine.

Then Darwin continued, "Since you're so curious about how I'll treat Fiona, I'll be straightforward. Fiona is mine, forever."

"Darwin, are you trying to drive her to death?"

"She won't die. I'll treat her better than before."

"Darwin..."

"Enough." Darwin laughed coldly. "You're so serious about this, I'm starting to wonder if you have feelings for Fiona that you shouldn't have."

Wyatt was stunned.

Then he instinctively denied it. "Of course not, I just feel sorry for her."

"Feel sorry for her?" Darwin seemed to hear something utterly ridiculous. "I make sure she wants for nothing, and I'll give her even more in the future. Why should you feel sorry for her?"

"Forget it." Wyatt knew he had overstepped.

He then filled Darwin in on what went down.

"Fiona's more capable than we thought," Wyatt added at the end.

Darwin was surprised Fiona had managed to clean up everything on her own.

She even recovered some of the embezzled funds.

Before hanging up, Wyatt hesitated for a long time but still said, "Darwin, if you won't let her go, at least don't keep her caged. Treating her like a bird in a cage is a waste of her abilities."

Darwin replied, "I know what I'm doing."

The call ended.

Wyatt took a deep breath.

He looked back at the blazing sun.

In his mind, the image of Fiona lowering her eyes and smiling sweetly appeared again.

"Wyatt!" He patted his forehead. "Get a grip!"

The driver soon took Fiona back to the hotel.

She switched to a private phone and made a few calls.

Over the years with Darwin, besides money, she had gained a lot, like connections.

She always remembered her grandmother's words to help others as much as you can.

As a result, she made many friends.

Among them was the young genius hacker Burl Allmond, whom she met while dealing with an attack on the Atlas Group's website.

Burl was in a similar situation to her back then.

His parents were both gamblers and abandoned him early on.

He lived with his grandfather, Dwayne Allmond, and had a natural talent for computers.

To earn money for Dwayne's medical treatment, he used his talent for the wrong purposes.

He ended up in juvenile detention.

During that time, Fiona paid the fees for his grandfather Dwayne out of her own pocket and issued a letter of understanding on behalf of the company.

After Burl was released, he acknowledged Fiona as his sister. Besides attending school, he also helped her with her work.

And then there was Sally Dapp, who took Rufus's son away under the guise of a tourist.

She was a tough woman, but her misfortune was that she was uneducated.

She made a lot of money in business early on.

But she was deceived by a man, losing everything and almost ending up in jail because of him.

At that time, she worked as a caregiver to survive in a nursing home, coincidentally taking care of Fiona's grandmother.

Sally, though tough, was kind-hearted and took excellent care of Fiona's grandmother.

After hearing about Sally's plight, Fiona helped her, not only recovering some of the money she was cheated out of but also sending the man to prison.

Sally was very grateful to Fiona.

After overcoming the trauma caused by the man, Sally restarted her business with Fiona's help.

She reactivated the connections she had accumulated over the years.

The person who smashed the car today was also found by Sally.

The road surveillance was naturally handled by Burl.

She called them one by one.

Burl said, "Fiona, don't need to thank me. Grandpa keeps asking when you'll be done with work and come over. He wants to cook meat for you!"

Fiona replied with a smile, "In a few days. I'll come over after I finish handing over the remaining work."

"Great, you can help me with my PTA!" Burl hummed happily.
