Chapter 1489
Chicago hung up the phone, feeling utterly distressed.
Ever since she found out that Charles and Charlotte had dated, her emotions had been all over the place.
That evening, she stayed close to the older relatives, listening to them talk about Charlotte's upcoming wedding.
One elderly woman said, "Fiona, did you hear that Charlotte is getting married? You didn't get any news about it beforehand?"
"Exactly, she grew up right under your nose. You put so much effort into raising her into a successful young professor, and now she's drifting away as she gets older."
Another unfamiliar elderly woman chimed in, "With her looks, she always seemed a bit cold-hearted."
Chicago felt extremely uncomfortable hearing this.
She turned to the unfamiliar woman, her face showing her displeasure, and said, "My mom is very busy and doesn't have time to keep tabs on our love lives all day. The feelings within our family are clear to us, so you don't need to comment. I don't like hearing it!"
The unfamiliar woman's face immediately stiffened.
She instinctively glanced at Fiona.
Normally, at such gatherings, Fiona would at least pretend to scold the impolite Chicago.
But Fiona sat there, her expression calm, her eyes lowered, showing no intention of reprimanding Chicago.
The elderly woman pursed her lips.
Then she smiled apologetically at Chicago and said, "I've had a few too many drinks, and my mind is a bit muddled. What I said earlier was indeed inappropriate. I'll punish myself with a drink, don't take it to heart."
"Better not. If you drink more, who knows what more annoying things you might say!"
With that, she put down her glass. "Mom, I'm going to find my friends."
"Go ahead," Fiona looked up at Chicago and smiled gently.
Scarlet also nodded lovingly at her. "Keep an eye on Melissa, that wild girl. She's upset about Charlotte getting married. Don't let her drink too much."
"Okay."
Chicago didn't bother with the unfamiliar woman anymore.
She turned and walked away.
After learning that Charlotte and Charles had dated, Chicago's feelings about Charlotte's rushed wedding changed completely.
Chicago walked out of the banquet hall with her head hanging low.
She saw Charlotte and Charles standing face to face.
It was only for a few seconds.
She didn't know what they said, but Charlotte walked away immediately.
Chicago's heart was racing.
She hurried over to Charles. "Charles! At a time like this, why are you still so proud? Go after her!"
She was so anxious that she didn't wait for Charles to respond.
She smacked his arm hard. "Do you know that the night Charlotte broke up with you, she cried alone for a long time? I've never seen her cry like that! She didn't want to break up with you! She was forced to! All that talk about just playing around was a lie! You're so stupid! Charlotte would never play with someone's feelings! You're so stupid! So stupid!"
"She cried?" Charles let Chicago hit him, but he caught onto the key point.
"Yeah, Jessie had passed away, right? That night, I missed her so much that I got drunk and fell asleep in her doghouse."
Chicago carefully described the events of that night.
Charles was stunned for a moment.
Then he patted Chicago's head, said nothing, and walked away quickly.
Chicago realized that Charles was going to chase after Charlotte.
She immediately smiled. "Go get her, Charles!"
After hanging up the phone, Chicago ruffled her hair, murmuring. "Damn it, go get her!"
"That idiot, he has Darwin's genes in him, going for that forced love."
She was still ruffling her hair when there was a knock on the studio door.
Chicago turned around.
