Chapter 310 Uncovered

“Would you like us to still contact Ms. Rhoads for you?” the doctor asked.

Darwin shook his head: “No need. Please, go about your business.”

The trio hurried off, moving quickly.

A few steps out, the nurse panicked, “What do we do? Did I mess up?”

The doctor’s face was ashen, “How many times have I told you? In the VIP ward, you mustn’t speak about things you shouldn’t, or comfort those who aren’t to be comforted. Why can’t you remember?”

“He’s Ms. Rhoads's husband!” The nurse was nearly in tears.

“There’s nothing I can do to help you. If this blows up, both of us could end up in trouble. You're on your own!”

Darwin remained standing there.

He took out a couple of painkillers from his pocket and tossed them into his mouth.
The doctor's explanation was painfully inadequate, and just at the critical moment, a nurse mentioned a child diagnosed with leukemia...
Darwin's brows furrowed deeply.
Could it be Fiona's daughter who fell ill?
When did this happen?
Today?
Or earlier?
Why hadn't she told him?

Did Dagwood know?

Before Darwin could sort through his thoughts, he intuitively knew the answer.
How could Dagwood possibly be unaware?
If he didn't know, what would he be doing here?
Darwin glanced again in the direction where Fiona and Dagwood had been, only to see that they had already left.

When Fiona returned to the ward,
Little Chicago, who had cried all morning, was now asleep in Janna’s arms.
Gently, Fiona took Chicago from Janna and handed her over to Wendy.
Sensibly, Wendy took Chicago to the adjacent rest room to sleep.

"A bone marrow transplant?" Janna inquired.
"Yep," Fiona nodded.
"It’s not a big deal, let’s get the marrow typing arranged tomorrow, set everything up," Janna paused, looking at Fiona, "You should also get Darwin tested, he’s her biological father after all."

"His won’t match," Fiona said, shaking her head.
Janna's face darkened, a rare occurrence, "This is about Charles’s health, don’t be stubborn!"
Seeing the tension, Dagwood quickly explained, "Grandma Rhoads, Darwin was just in a serious accident, he hasn’t fully recovered. Even if the typing matched, he can't donate right now."

Janna frowned even more, "Lilian deserves the worst punishment!"
"It's okay, I’ve already made contacts. The world’s bone marrow donor registries, and other channels; I’ve got them on it," Dagwood comforted Janna gently, "We caught Charles’s condition early, it’s not an emergency, we have time to wait."

"And even if Darwin can't, what about the other Solomons? The Solomon family may have fallen apart, but there are still plenty of relatives," Janna continued.
"I’ve sent people to ask. Those folks will say yes if the price is right," Fiona replied.
Janna looked at her, understanding the stubborn streak deep inside Fiona.
If Darwin's marrow was a match, she would go to any lengths to seek his help, but his not being an option now...

In the evening,
Fiona and Janna were hosting a dinner for the visiting team of specialists.
After a nap, Chicago was unusually clingy to her mother and grandmother.
Yet she couldn’t bear to leave her brother behind and refused to go out to dinner with Mommy.
Instead, she showed her considerate side by holding Mommy’s hand and walking her to the garage.
"Mommy, you really should eat some more," Chicago said, glancing up as they walked, always the caring one. "And don't worry about big bro, I'll cheer him up!"

"I got it, sweetie."

"Why don't you ask Grandma Rhoads or Uncle to have some as well?" Dagwood teased, scooping Chicago into his arms with a mock pout.

Chicago hugged his neck tightly. "Uncle, you're all grown up, being jealous isn't cool at all! Such a kid, when will you ever find Auntie for me?”

Janna burst into laughter.

Caught off guard, Dagwood joined in, chuckling.

"Look at you, worrying about your old uncle too!"

The group continued to the garage amid laughter and chatter, finding their family van.

Chicago hopped down from Dagwood's arms.

Fiona crouched in front of her, gently touching her cheek. "You sure you don't want to join Mommy?"

Chicago shook her head. "Brother is waiting for me; he said he wants to watch me mix paints."

"Alright then, the cupcakes Uncle bought you can share one with your brother, but just one, okay?" Fiona said softly.

"You're the best, Mommy!" Chicago planted a big kiss on Fiona's cheek.

Then the adults got into the car.

Chicago stood on her tiptoes, watching the van until it was out of sight.

"Miss, would you like a horseback ride from Uncle Stuart?" Stuart knew that Chicago hadn't been happy these past few days; she had even had nightmares during her afternoon naps, and he had been there reading when he heard her crying softly in her sleep.

Stuart treated Chicago as if she were his own daughter, admitting he felt differently about her and Charles; he couldn't help it.

Seeing Chicago unhappy wrenched his heart.

He tried every trick in the book to make her smile.

"No, thank you." Chicago shook her head sincerely. "Uncle Stuart, you're getting older. I should be more considerate and ease your burden. Let's just hold hands."

She reached out her hand to him.

But at that moment.

Stuart stepped forward abruptly, shielding her with a protective stance.

His aura turned fierce, almost intimidating
"Wendy, take Miss back inside."

"Darwin?" Wendy didn't answer Stuart but instead exclaimed in surprise.

Chicago was taken aback; her Darwin was none other than Mr. Solomon, wasn't it?

She peeked out from behind Stuart adorably and indeed she saw him, her Darwin – though his expression was stern and a bit intimidating.

"Darwin!" she called out.

Despite Darwin's cold demeanor, seeming somewhat daunting.
As the preferred novelist of Chicago, Darwin wasn't the least bit frightened.

She dashed straight toward Darwin.

"Miss!" Stuart's nerves had been on edge since the moment he saw Darwin, unable to steady himself.

He instinctively reached out to pull Chicago back as she bolted forward. But Wendy, ever so cheerful, slapped him on the shoulder, causing his reflexes to slow just enough to watch, wide-eyed, as Darwin scooped Chicago into his arms.

Stuart felt as if the world was crumbling around him.

But his clueless teammate didn't grasp the severity of the situation. "Dude, relax! This Mr. Solomon is just the cool and rich Darwin who's tight with the young lady!"

Wendy was quite an enigma. She spoke both Chinese and English but couldn't read or use the internet.

Her greatest joy was to watch cartoons with Chicago or soap operas alongside Stuart. Therefore, completely oblivious to the viral internet saga of Darwin and Fiona, she simply thought Mr. Solomon was nothing more than the handsome and wealthy man that was kind to the young lady!
