Chapter 1171
Fiona didn't waste a second. She whipped out her phone and called Henry. "Hey, Mr. Clark, my hubby's not feeling too hot. I gotta take him home. Can you cover for me?"
Henry had sensed something was amiss with Darwin just now and was quick to agree.
Fifteen minutes later, Fiona helped Darwin in the car and was driving home. She got him straight to their room and plopped him down on her favorite sofa by the window.
"Don't sweat it, babe. If you're sick, we'll fix it. We can get the best docs," Fiona said, squatting in front of Darwin, her cool hand brushing his pale cheek.
Darwin's eyes were red and he looked super stressed. Fiona thought about the other Darwin he mentioned, and it tore her up inside.
"Can you tell me when he first showed up?" Fiona asked softly.
Darwin looked at her. "The first time was when I got to North Alabama. He just stood there, watching me, not saying a word, and I just heard dripping water." His voice shook. "I know it's a hallucination. I can tell the difference!"
"Good," Fiona smiled, gripping his hand tight. "Knowing the difference is good. It means it's not too bad."
But today, Darwin had rushed to find her, clearly starting to lose his grip on what was real and what was not.
"The day I fell into the water in Chicago, he changed. He started talking to me, mocking me," Darwin squeezed Fiona's hand hard. "I know what he is. He's the part of me I hate—selfish, narrow-minded, brutal. He made you suffer. I can't stand him. I want him gone!"
Fiona listened, thinking about what Janna had told her in North Alabama.
"Take me to a doctor. I want him gone!" Darwin begged.
"Darwin, chill," Fiona soothed.
"You don't get it. He's getting stronger. He almost pushed me down the stairs if Burl hadn't shown up in time," Darwin said, looking freaked out.
Fiona was shocked.
"If he can push me, he can hurt you, Chicago, and Charles!" Darwin looked desperate.
Fiona fought to keep it together. "Darwin, he's a hallucination. He can't hurt you, me, or the kids."
Darwin was stunned, then dropped his eyes, muttering, "Yeah, he's a hallucination. How could I forget that?"
"It's okay," Fiona hugged him. "Dr. Hubert is exceptionally skilled. We'll meet him tomorrow, and he can make the hallucinations disappear. If we actively cooperate with the treatment, you'll recover in no time."
"But what if," Darwin struggled to keep his emotions in check, pushing Fiona away and forcing a painful smile, "if he's the real Darwin and I'm just a personality from amnesia, I'll disappear with treatment. Remember your promise. Don't accept him, don't let him harm you!"
"You are Darwin, I know it," Fiona said, tears streaming down her face.
"Don't cry," Darwin said, kissing her tears away. "I hate seeing you cry."
That night, Fiona gave Darwin a sleeping pill and stayed by his side, holding his hand to her forehead. She finally understood what had been gnawing at her all this time.
