Chapter 114 Will You Marry Me?
Mia watched as Darwin walked away.
"You're overthinking it, aren't you? He's usually cold and indifferent, but today he's been sticking to you like glue, hardly eating anything."
Lilian sneered.
"But he's been absent-minded," Mia said. "Maybe he's thinking about how to deal with that stand-in? After all, the true main character has returned," Mia mentioned the stand-in with a disdainful expression.
Lilian remained silent and walked towards the residential area.
During the night, a drizzle of cold rain began to fall. The cold air penetrated to the bones. Darwin parked the car by the roadside and sat inside, smoking cigarette after cigarette. It continued until late into the night. Only then did Darwin start the car and drive, aimlessly, until he arrived near Fiona's apartment.
For so many years, Fiona had always been a source of comfort for him. He parked the car. With weary steps, Darwin made his way to Fiona's apartment. Thinking that Fiona wasn't home, he directly unlocked the door with his fingerprint.
"Darwin?"
Just as he took off his coat, the bedroom door opened, and Fiona, wearing a soft pajama, stood there with sleepy eyes.
Darwin was taken aback. The dim yet warm light filled the room, and Fiona exuded a calming aura.
"You're back?" Darwin said, rushing forward and tightly embracing her.
Warm, alive. It was real, not a dream.
"You're suffocating me," Fiona gently patted his back. "Loosen up a little!"
"Why did you come back by yourself? I didn't go to pick you up, are you angry?" Darwin asked nervously.
Since Fiona had revealed her true self, she would run away if she was unhappy. Who knows, she might have left if he didn't come today!
"Am I that petty?" Fiona pushed him again. "How many cigarettes have you smoked? It smells terrible!"
Darwin regained his senses. He quickly let go of Fiona. Having stayed in the hospital for so long, he might still have the scent of hospitals on him. Darwin thought it over and decided not to tell Fiona about Lilian. There was no need for her to overthink and worry about other things because of this.
"I'll go take a shower." Darwin caressed Fiona's head and turned to the bathroom.
Fiona stood in place. She didn't expect Darwin to suddenly come over at night. But, when he embraced her, that lingering sense of unease in her heart disappeared. Fiona let out a sigh and returned to the bedroom, curling up in the blankets.
Just as she was drifting off to sleep, Darwin finished showering and came in. He carefully lifted the covers and swiftly slid next to Fiona, using both his long legs and arms to wrap her in his embrace. Fiona placed her hand on his back. Darwin reached back and tightly intertwined their fingers.
"After the engagement was called off, the public … Darwin, you've been through a lot, haven't you?" Fiona asked.
Buried in the crook of her neck, Darwin indulged in the moment and replied with contentment, "It's alright."
Fiona toyed with his fingers, "I should have come back a few days ago to help you. Janna Rhoads coughed up blood and was hospitalized."
"But you always call her Grandma Rhoads, right? Why did you change her name now?" Darwin keenly noticed, "Did she upset you?"
"No," Fiona denied.
Darwin flipped her over.
Fiona thought to herself, Darwin you're strong, and that's impressive!
"Tell me the truth." Darwin stared at her.
With wet hair softly falling on his forehead, Darwin looked less imposing than usual.
"I just know that after what she did to her daughter-in-law, I grew to dislike her," Fiona honestly replied.
Darwin remembered the slap Anniston gave Fiona at the nursing home.
"You won't have any conflicts with your mother-in-law in the future." Darwin kissed her nose, "If you don't like her, I won't let her see you."
Fiona laughed quietly. Truth be told, she wasn't afraid of Anniston. If it came to a fight, she wasn't sure she could hold her own.
"Alright." Fiona gently caressed Darwin's cheek, "You look really tired, go to sleep. I'll help you fall asleep."
Darwin's heart instantly sank. It suddenly occurred to him that it had been two years since Fiona came to his side. That time, they were on a business trip together and witnessed a car accident on the way. The scene seemed to have triggered something in his brain, and he started experiencing phantom pain at night. The intense pain from his own accident resurfaced completely. That night, Fiona didn't close her eyes for a second and stayed by his side.
By the time dawn approached, the pain finally began to fade away. It was the first time Fiona defied him, and it happened on that day. Ignoring his objections, she canceled all his meetings for the day. Then she said, "Meetings can be scheduled anytime. You need to rest. Go to sleep, I'll help you fall asleep."
Darwin had never known before that he had so many memories of so many moments with Fiona. How foolish he had been, only slowly realizing her importance when she wanted to leave. No one could be better to him than Fiona.
"Alright." Darwin obediently closed his eyes.
Fiona felt like he had something on his mind. "Darwin," she softly called.
"Hmm?"
"Do you have time the day after tomorrow or the day after that?" Fiona didn't pry into Darwin's concerns. If he wanted to share, he would naturally. But she could still make him happy.
"What's the matter?" Darwin asked.
"I want to have dinner with you at home," Fiona didn't make it too obvious, so Darwin wouldn't guess too soon.
"Sure, then let's do it the day after tomorrow," Darwin agreed.
"Okay!"
Fiona gently patted Darwin's back, "Sleep now."
Darwin couldn't fall asleep. Whenever he closed his eyes, he saw Lilian's frightened and helpless expression. Or perhaps Fiona's determined face.
"Fiona," Darwin called out with a hoarse voice after a long while. Fiona had just fallen asleep and was now abruptly awakened. Annoyed, she bumped her head against Darwin's chest. Darwin chuckled.
"What do you want?" Fiona asked grumpily.
Darwin cupped her face, leaned down, and gave her a gentle and brief kiss. Fiona sighed in resignation. After releasing her, Darwin spoke seriously, 'Let's register our marriage tomorrow. We can announce it publicly once the storm surrounding the engagement dies down.'
"Tomorrow?" Fiona was taken aback. Typically, it should be her, the substitute lover, who desperately wanted to get married. Why was Darwin, a domineering CEO, in such a hurry to tie the knot?
"Yeah, don't you want to?" Darwin furrowed his brow slightly. "I've already broken off the engagement for you. Don't you trust my sincerity? Are you still thinking about leaving?"
"It's not that," Fiona mumbled. "Marriage is a big deal, we should at least choose a more favorable day, right?"
"So, you're willing to marry me then?" Darwin had mentioned marriage so many times before, but Fiona always avoided the question. This was the first time she gave him a direct answer."
