Chapter 506 Eyes Went Wide with Surprise
Thalassa was genuinely taken aback by such a remark.
She couldn't understand how anyone could have such an unbelievable impression of Kenny, who was known for his gentleness.
"How could that be? Kenny is so mild-mannered," Thalassa voiced his confusion.
The sisters-in-law exchanged glances, both turning their gaze to Scarlet for clarification.
Scarlet shrugged and said, "Sure, Kenny has always been polite and considerate since he was little. But deep down, he's never cared much for the world's rules—he operates by his own."
"Really?" Thalassa couldn't believe Kenny was like that.
"When I realized this about him when he was five or six years old, you can't imagine how disheartened I was," Scarlet sighed lightly.
Thalassa listened, her thoughts racing. Perhaps, this was some new high-society tactic to intimidate a less wealthy daughter-in-law.
"And what's this about dissection?" Thalassa asked, curious to uncover what seemed like an attempt to scare her.
"Before Kenny went to college, he actually wanted to pursue medicine," his sister-in-law chimed in with a hint of guilt.
"Medicine? He never mentioned that."
"Yes, he's been fascinated by it since he was a child. By the age of five or six, he could meticulously dissect a frog based on just a textbook." Scarlet nodded in confirmation.
"That impressive?" Thalassa was astonished.
Scarlet was taken aback by Thalassa's reaction. A young girl like her should be a little scared.
She couldn't understand Thalassa's surprise, even admiration for Kenny's talents.
"Yes... yes, very impressive!"
"So why did he change his career path?" Thalassa asked, curious about the turn in Kenny's aspirations.
From what she knew about Kenny, it was unlikely he would give up on something he had loved passionately since childhood so easily.
Her sister-in-law sighed, "That year when I first married into the family, I accidentally stumbled into a room plastered with anatomical photos, and there were jars that seemed to be filled with human organs... I was terrified. Just then Kenny came out from the inner room, not knowing what he had just dissected. Seeing him with his white lab coat stained with blood and his grim expression, I fainted from fright."
Thalassa pictured the scene herself.
Indeed, it was quite chilling.
Taking a sip of water, her sister-in-law continued, "When I came to, I was in the hospital. The doctor said I had a scare-induced threatened miscarriage and needed to be hospitalized for two months before things stabilized with the pregnancy."
She hastened to add, seeing some concern in Thalassa's face, "Really, it wasn't Kenny's fault at all; it was me intruding... Later, I learned that his older brother was furious over the incident. He even said that everyone in the family was scared of him, scared that one day, in a bad mood, he might kill them all..."
Thalassa frowned slightly.
"Eventually, Kenny cleaned out his stuff from the house and gave up on medicine..." Scarlet spoke with a much gentler tone. "We're telling you all this because we worry that as you become closer to the family, you might hear a lot of gossip. Kenny is indeed different from most, but I know that you are special to him."
"Why?" Thalassa asked, bewildered.
She couldn't fathom why the scion of a powerful family, a prodigy and an exceptionally handsome man like Kenny, would choose her.
"Before you came along, we never believed Kenny would find a partner," her sister-in-law said.
"Right, if he did find someone, I thought it would be a man!" her other sister-in-law chimed in.
Thalassa didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
"When Kenny talks about you, it's different; it makes him seem so much more alive," Scarlet said. "In fact, the housekeeper from your side sometimes secretly sends me videos of the two of you together, and I can't recognize that the man beside you is my Kenny."
They rested in the café for over an hour.
Through the conversations with Scarlet and the others, Thalassa encountered a side of Kenny she had never known—a disciplined and polite man who, due to his family's fear, opted for more widely accepted fields like physics and business instead of pursuing his passion for anatomy.
Even those closest to him were convinced he would never marry.
Yet, suddenly, he had eloped with her—someone he had only met twice.
Thalassa was not a man of many words.
She simply listened as the warrior women of the Walker family shared their colorful stories.
Even though she said it with disbelief, Thalassa could sense the tolerance and love that Kenny's mother and sisters-in-law had for him. Deep down, they were truly happy about Kenny's premature marriage. It was evident in everything they said and did. They saw Kenny as his salvation. However, in truth, it was Kenny's firm choice, his descent from heaven, that was incessantly saving her.
"Thalassa, did we say too much?" Thalassa wasn't saying much, which made the eldest sister-in-law carefully broach the subject. She feared their prattling might scare away her little brother's charming wife.
The Walker family tree was intricate and lush, its branches far-reaching. Beyond the immediate family, there were countless relatives. Within the Walker family, there were many legends about the young master, Kenny—some of which were rather outrageous. Scarlet and her daughters had discussed this. Instead of trying to cover things up and risk having the new daughter-in-law hear exaggerated stories about Kenny from others, they decided it was better to let Thalassa know some of the truth through casual conversations. They had been very cautious and restrained in what they shared.
"Of course not. How could you think that?" Thalassa quickly said. "I'm so happy that Mom and the sisters-in-law are willing to share things about Kenny's past that I didn't know."
Scarlet was speechless. She'd had this feeling from the start. No wonder Kenny had chosen her as his partner. She was indeed unique. Whether they were out shopping or chatting, all four of them had a great time. When they returned home, it was just in time for dinner. The male Walkers were waiting in the main hall.
Thalassa, from afar, saw Kenny and a smile spread across her face. When Kenny approached, she trotted over. "How was it with Mom and the sisters-in-law?"
Thalassa nodded with a smile. "They are so easy to get along with! They bought me so much stuff, practically cleared out the mall... and I couldn't stop them!"
Taking her hand, Kenny began to converse as they walked toward the dining room, while everyone else simply watched.
"Look at Kenny staring at them with those adoring eyes, their fingers interlocked. Think about it, even in his kindergarten days, he wouldn't hold hands with me, his own mother." Scarlet, arms crossed, nudged Matt. "What was it you said before? That his wife might be someone he hired just to stop us from pushing him to marry?"
Matt fell silent. He had indeed had such a thought when he first heard of Kenny's sudden marriage.
Meanwhile, Thalassa, who had walked ahead, realized that no one else had followed and turned back.
Scarlet immediately beamed with a loving smile. "We're on our way!"
