Chapter 1411

Darwin had always known that Charles held a lot of resentment towards him.

The fact that Charles eventually accepted him was largely because Fiona had chosen him.

Darwin always wanted Fiona to be happy, and that was enough.

So, Darwin assumed that whatever Charles was about to say would likely be a reprimand or criticism.

But what he heard was completely unexpected.

"I've studied a lot of math and physics, and I'm a materialist. But this time, I hope things will be different. I hope for a miracle."

Charles, who was usually so stoic and unemotional, suddenly had tears welling up in his eyes. He was trying hard to hold them back.

"You've done a lot of bad things. You bullied Mommy, almost killed me and my sister, and used Dagwood and Great-Grandma to threaten her. I used to hate you so much."

"But things are different now. I've accepted that you're my dad. Mommy needs you, my sister needs you, and I need you too. So, can you come back?"

Darwin hadn't known that both Chicago and Charles were aware of how he had once doubted that Fiona's baby was his and had insisted she get an abortion.

So when he heard Charles and Chicago mention it, he was shocked and terrified.

He had never imagined that the kids would choose to forgive him after knowing the truth.

Darwin had even come up with several plans in his head to win the kids over.

That day, Darwin did nothing else.

He kept listening to and reading the messages his wife and kids had sent him, over and over.

He didn't even bother to eat.

Hubert had instructed the caregivers not to disturb him.

So, Darwin was lost in his thoughts until his phone died. He looked out the window and realized it was already dark.

He glanced at his phone, which had automatically shut off.

He pressed the call button.

Hubert came in through the door.

"Well, what a coincidence. I was just coming to check on you."

Darwin handed him the phone. "My phone's dead."

"I'll charge it for you. You haven't eaten in two meals. Aren't you hungry?"

"Now that you mention it, I am a bit hungry." Darwin looked a bit disheveled, his eyes red and his nose still a bit swollen from crying.

Hubert immediately had Darwin's meal brought in.

He sat with Darwin in the hospital room, keeping him company while he ate. "Do you need a sedative tonight?"

Darwin paused, noticing a dark shadow on the window out of the corner of his eye. "No."

Hubert raised an eyebrow. "Looks like Ms. Rhoads brought some good medicine?"

"Yeah." Darwin responded briefly, not saying much more to Hubert.

After dinner, Hubert went through his usual routine of asking Darwin about his day before leaving the room.

As he closed the door, Hubert glanced back at Darwin.

For a moment, he felt like there was something different about Darwin, but he couldn't quite put his finger on what it was.

The door closed.

The room returned to its eerie silence.
