Chapter 70 Engrossed in Conversation!

"Ever since he got back from New Port, he's been busting his ass," Darwin said, kicking back.

"Good for him," Fiona replied, not really caring.

"That dude, Dagwood..." Darwin started.

Fiona's face scrunched up.

"I told you, Dagwood and I were just neighbors growing up. We ran into each other by chance! My grandparents looked after him, so I took him to the cemetery that day! Don't mess with him!" She snapped.

Darwin's smile faded. "Can you let me finish?"

Fiona stayed quiet.

Darwin continued, "He's been working on a project to help kids with congenital heart disease. I threw in some cash anonymously."

Fiona was taken aback.

Darwin glanced at her. "Fiona, I might not be a saint, but I'm not a total jerk either."

Fiona bit her lip.

After a moment, she muttered, "Thanks."

Darwin looked a bit let down.

He'd tried everything to make her happy.

So why did she still seem so bummed?

"Let's grab some porridge," Fiona changed the topic. "I need something warm."

"Sure," Darwin agreed.

They both went quiet.

Darwin wasn't much of a talker anyway.

And Fiona didn't feel like chatting.

Feeling sleepy, she glanced outside and spotted a familiar figure on the emergency lane ahead.

"Hey, it's that old lady!" Fiona perked up and signaled Darwin to pull over.

Darwin saw her too.

He slowly pulled the car over.

Fiona quickly unbuckled her seatbelt and hopped out.

"Take it easy!" Darwin called, worried she'd trip.

As soon as Fiona got out, she called out, "Madam!"

Janna turned and looked surprised to see Fiona, then smiled. "Ms. Woods, what a coincidence!"

"What happened to your car?" Fiona asked.

"No clue," Janna shrugged. "I called for a tow truck, but it's taking forever."

Just then, she noticed someone behind Fiona.

She saw a man in a black tailored suit and a black wool coat, walking over calmly.

"Mr. Solomon?" Janna looked surprised.

She glanced at the car behind and didn't see anyone else inside.

"Ms. Rhoads," Darwin nodded.

"You know me?" Janna looked shocked.

"You didn't introduce yourself before, so I figured you wanted to keep it low-key," Darwin replied politely.

"You two know each other?" Fiona, who had been too mad to think straight, suddenly realized no one had introduced Janna at the sanatorium, yet she had found Darwin and called him.

"I've heard a lot about Ms. Rhoads," Darwin said, draping the cashmere scarf he was holding over Fiona.

It was pretty chilly on that late autumn night.

Unexpectedly, Fiona took off the scarf and quickly wrapped it around Janna.

Janna smiled warmly.

But her gaze shifted between Fiona and Darwin, looking a bit curious.

"What's up with Stuart?" Fiona noticed Stuart, standing in front, looking a bit pissed.

"He's hungry," Janna chuckled, "He's always been like this since he was a kid, can't stand being hungry, gets all cranky like a child!"

'Childish?' Fiona thought, looking at Stuart's massive frame.

It was tough to picture him as childish.

"Why don't you join us for dinner in the city? I haven't eaten yet either. If you don't mind, I'll treat you as a thank you for helping me!" Fiona suggested.

"That sounds awesome!" Janna said, glancing at Darwin. "Mr. Solomon, is that cool?"

"Sure thing."

A bit later, Darwin was driving with a somewhat stiff expression.

In the passenger seat, a starving Stuart was crammed in.

Fiona and Janna were in the back, chatting away.

In just ten minutes, they had switched topics four times, seamlessly transitioning between them.

They were now talking about the New Port project.

"You did it yourself?" Janna looked surprised.

Fiona replied, "I just built the framework; the team did the rest!"

Despite all the talking, she still didn't know who this elderly lady, whom even Darwin treated with such respect, really was.

She seemed to know everything and had dabbled in everything.

They had just talked about jewelry, and now they were discussing infrastructure projects.

When it came to some very critical technical knowledge, she was not unfamiliar at all.

"Mr. Solomon, your secretary is quite impressive!" Janna looked at Darwin. "Keeping her by your side is a waste, why not let her work for me? I need someone as beautiful..."

She quickly corrected herself. "I need someone as smart as her!"

"Ms. Rhoads, to be honest, Mr. Newton from R&K also wanted her," Darwin said with a hint of pride, "I refused him, so giving Fiona to you would offend him."

"William Newton?" Janna was a bit surprised.

William was ugly, but he was a dedicated man.

His late wife was a very sensitive woman, and to avoid making her jealous or upset, all his secretaries and assistants were men.

He actually asked for Fiona to work for him?

It seemed Fiona was indeed a talent!

Fiona remained silent.

She wanted to give Darwin a good bite.

Wasn't he cutting off her financial path?

Janna didn't dwell on this matter.

Fiona wasn't Darwin's property; if she wanted Fiona, she didn't need to discuss it with him.

As long as Fiona was willing, that was enough.

"You have such beautiful wrists!" Janna held Fiona's hand and praised her. "Wouldn't they look great with an emerald bracelet?"

Fiona was embarrassed by the compliment.

"By the way, Ms. Woods, where are you from?"

"Serene City," Fiona replied.

"Serene City?" Janna was taken aback.

"Yes, have you been there?" Fiona asked.

"Not yet, but I have plans. An old friend of mine is buried there." Janna's previously cheerful demeanor turned a bit somber.

"I'm sorry," Fiona said softly.

Janna smiled. "Don't be. It's all in the past."

The car arrived in the city.

Janna pointed out a restaurant.

"The food here is delicious, you'll love it." After getting out of the car, she held Fiona's hand and didn't let go.

Stuart followed behind, muttering something.

Darwin followed behind.

Fiona was a bit taller than Janna.

When Janna spoke to her, Fiona would lean towards her, listening intently.

Darwin suddenly remembered what Fiona had said earlier in the day, "I'm beautiful, have a great figure, and a good personality. Isn't it normal for people to like me?"
