Chapter 1229

Fiona and Ashton were chatting and laughing all night long.

Every now and then, Kenny would chime in with some childhood stories.

The vibe was super chill.

Fiona thought to herself, 'Is this the calm before the storm?'

As the night wore on, Ashton and Kenny headed to their rooms around eleven.

Darwin, probably because of his meds, was unusually hyper and in high spirits today.

Fiona, a bit worried, took the chance to ask Hubert when Darwin wasn't looking.

Hubert quickly reassured her: [It's normal to be a bit hyper on the first day. You can use some meds to help with sleep.]

Fiona slipped some sleeping pills into Darwin's nighttime meds.

Darwin never checked what she gave him.

He just obediently swallowed it all.

The meds even took away his usual negative vibes.

Lying in bed, gently stroking Fiona's cheek, he said seriously, "Honey, don't worry, I will get better. We've been through so much to be together, and we have such lovely kids. How could I bear to put you all through hell? I will get better soon."

Then, Darwin leaned in and gently kissed Fiona's lips.

But the sleeping pills started to kick in.

Darwin didn't want to sleep.

But after blinking a few times, he finally gave in to the meds.

Fiona looked at him, gently kissed him, and said, "Good night, Darwin."

After Darwin fell asleep, Fiona got up and left the master bedroom, turning on the temporary surveillance camera in the room.

Mike and Christopher were still in the living room.

Seeing Fiona come downstairs, both visibly sighed in relief.

"What's with those looks?" Fiona asked.

"Nothing," Christopher waved it off.

"I'm not that obsessed," Fiona said, lowering her eyes self-deprecatingly. "I still have Charles and Chicago."

Even if there was only a one-in-a-million chance, if the lake incident happened again, and she died at Darwin's hands, she would die, unaware and unfeeling.

But for Charles and Chicago, the future would be a living hell.

"You guys haven't rested well for days, go get some sleep," Fiona paused, looking at Christopher. "Tomorrow we're going camping, don't focus all your attention on me. Have fun with Charlotte."

Christopher suddenly felt a lump in his throat.

Then, he nodded. "Got it."

"Good night," Fiona nodded gently.

Mike hesitated for a moment before leaving, but Christopher dragged him to the door.

Mike looked back at Fiona.

Most of the lights in the living room were off, only the night light near the sofa was still on.

Fiona was curled up in the corner of the sofa alone. She looked like she had been abandoned by the world.

Mike could hardly remember what she looked like when she was more vibrant.

He was about to leave.

Suddenly, he sensed a gaze from the stairs.

He looked over warily and then froze.

Burl was sitting barefoot on the steps, his hair a mess, looking even more desolate than Fiona.
