Chapter 990
Father Ben had grown so thin that he was unrecognizable from his appearance ten years ago.
Alexander endured the pain in his chest. Sitting beside Father Ben, he gently took his hand.
Father Ben was so emaciated that his arm was merely a layer of wrinkled skin covering the bones.
Alexander carefully felt Father Ben's pulse at his wrist. Father Ben's body had reached a point where it could no longer sustain itself. If only Alexander had come a bit earlier, even three months earlier, he might have been able to restore that faint breath.
Alexander's guilt erupted in an instant.
Stella was right. Why hadn't he come when he was not allowed to? He should have come long ago!
"Father Alexander, how is he? How is Father Ben?" Liam hurriedly asked.
Alexander did not speak. He took out his acupuncture tools.
"What are you going to do?" Liam asked.
"First, I need to wake him up," Alexander said.
Liam hesitated for a moment but did not stop him. Moments later, Father Ben let out a weak cough.
"Father Ben!" Liam hurriedly walked over, crying out with a sob in his voice.
"What is it?" Father Ben's voice was hoarse.
"Father Ben, you've been asleep for so long, and I couldn't wake you no matter how hard I tried!" Liam said, choking with emotion.
Father Ben's eyelids felt heavy. His gaze shifted to behind Liam.
The handsome Alexander stood there, looking at him with a sorrowful expression.
Father Ben was momentarily dazed. "Father Alexander?"
"Father Ben!" Alexander immediately knelt.
"When did you arrive?" Father Ben's eyes reddened, and after a moment of silence, he asked.
"I arrived at noon," Alexander Beaumont replied.
"Father Ben, I'll go get you something to eat." Seeing that his master had no significant reaction, Liam thought to give them some space to talk. He said this and then left, wiping his tears.
"Come closer to me." Father Ben had poor eyesight. From a distance, he couldn't see clearly.
Alexander stood up and knelt by Father Ben's bedside. Father Ben raised his hand, his withered hand trembling slightly, and gently touched Alexander's cheek.
"Father Alexander," Father Ben said softly, tears rolling down his cloudy eyes. "I ask you, have your wishes come true?"
Alexander nodded, choking with emotion. Father Ben sighed deeply as if a great burden had been lifted.
"That's good."
"That's good."
He sighed twice in succession. Tears streamed down Alexander's face. "But I have failed you, Father Ben."
In Father Ben's memory, Alexander had never cried like this. He had always appeared gentle and polite, but deep down, he was exceptionally stubborn.
"Destiny is what you make of it." Father Ben paused and said, "I heard from Mason that Stella is very good."
Alexander nodded and then said, "Father Ben, my elders are all in Armie, now in North Alabama. I'll have them brought here tomorrow."
Father Ben waved his hand. "Your medical skills are excellent. You've examined me and should know that I don't have much time left."
Alexander felt very sad immediately.
Father Ben waved his hand again. "Don't trouble yourself."
He repeated it once more, "Don't trouble yourself."
