Chapter 31 Vicious?

Rufus thought he misheard and asked, "Who got into trouble?"

"Someone online spilled all of Mack's dirty laundry—crimes, murder, arson, you name it. Cops are already on his tail!" the guy who came in said, freaking out. "Rufus, what do we do? Mack won't drag us down with him, will he..."

Before he could finish, Rufus kicked him.

The guy finally noticed the bigwigs from the head office in the room.

He clammed up real quick.

"Mr. Chapman, that's enough," Fiona said, clearly out of patience.

Rufus turned around.

Why did Mack's dirt have to come out now of all times?

"Ms. Woods, was this your doing?" Rufus asked.

Fiona shrugged. "Who knows? Maybe it was divine intervention. I don't even know if the cops have nabbed anyone yet. I'd love to check with Mack himself."

Rufus just stood there.

He knew if Mack got caught, he was toast too.

Fiona must've already pieced everything together and set a trap.

While they were dreaming of billions, she was quietly setting the stage. No escape.

With Mack's dirt out there, he was done for.

Thinking about Mack's fate, Rufus figured his own wouldn't be much better.

"Ms. Woods, my kid's still young. He's innocent!" he gritted his teeth. "Let my kid go, and I'll turn myself in!"

"Don't rush, let's chat," Fiona gestured for him to sit.

Rufus felt like his legs were made of lead.

He'd already offered to turn himself in, what more did she want?

But his kid was in Fiona's hands.

He had no choice but to comply.

After Rufus sat down, Fiona pulled out a blank notebook and a pen from her bag and slid them over to him.

"When I was little, my grandpa told me bad people never work alone," Fiona said softly. "I don't want to waste time hunting them down one by one, so write down all the bad guys for me."

Rufus was stunned. "Ms. Woods, I only know about my own stuff..."

Before he could finish, Fiona slammed the pen in front of him.

She didn't say another word.

But Rufus felt the pressure and threat loud and clear.

"Mr. Durham, got any kids around seven or eight in your family?" Fiona suddenly asked Wyatt.

Wyatt had been staring at her.

When she turned to him, his heart skipped a beat.

He coughed to cover his nerves and answered casually, "I got two nephews about that age."

Fiona added, "You know kids that young are super fragile? They can choke on food or water if they're not careful."

"Fiona Woods!" Rufus shouted.

Fiona looked back at him, puzzled. "What's wrong? Just chatting with Mr. Durham. Focus on your task and don't mind us."

"Why you so vicious!" Rufus dropped all pretense. "Fiona, if you touch my kid, I swear I won't let you go!"

Fiona leaned back in her chair, just watching him, not saying a word.

Rufus felt a chill under her stare.

His mind was stuck on what Fiona said about how easily a kid could choke on food or water.

"If I spill, will you let my son go?" Rufus asked.

Fiona sighed. "Mr. Chapman, your kid's missing. I get it. Just let me wrap up my work, and I'll help you look for him. I got a knack for finding things; maybe I'll get lucky."

Rufus had planned to drag her down with him.

His phone was already recording.

He wanted Fiona to admit she had his kid, so even if he turned himself in, he could nail her for kidnapping.

But she was too slick.

Her vague words were useless.

Fiona glanced at the clock. "It's almost lunchtime. Think we can find your kid before lunch?"

Rufus was so mad he could grind his teeth to dust.

He grabbed the paper and started writing.

He was so pissed his first stroke tore the paper.

Fiona watched, calm as ever.

Rufus wrote down name after name, each with their dirty deeds.

Wyatt was stunned.

He had planned to clean house himself.

But he didn't expect Fiona to go straight for the jugular.

Time ticked by.

Rufus filled four whole pages.

In just half a year, on just the second phase of the construction site, these people had skimmed off a ton.

"That's all I know." Rufus put down the pen, looking pale and drained.

Most of these people were tight with him and had given him plenty of perks.

Now, for his kid, he had to sell them out.

"Very good." Fiona pulled out a box of ink pads. "Now, put your fingerprint on each line."

Rufus trembled with rage.

But after a brief stare-down with Fiona, he knew fighting was pointless.

He took a deep breath and started fingerprinting.

After he finished, Fiona took the papers and checked them over.

Then she handed them to Wyatt, who had been silent the whole time, and he took them, looking dazed.

As he read, he frowned in disgust.

These bastards had really taken a lot.

The amount was almost as much as a small company's annual earnings.

Rufus sat there, on edge, waiting for Wyatt to finish reading.

Just as he was about to ask about his kid, his phone rang sharply.

It was his wife.

He quickly answered.

"Where's our son? Did you find him?" he shouted.

"Rufus, we found him! Some kind soul took him to the police station. Rufus, I was so scared!" His wife was crying non-stop.

Rufus sighed in relief.

He hung up and looked at Fiona. "Ms. Woods, I really underestimated you."

His kid had just been picked up by a kind person and taken to the police station.

What did that have to do with Fiona?
