Chapter 1495
David was someone Charles had heard about.
He was Charlotte's research partner, specializing in entomology.
But his real interest was in pharmacology.
"Who would joke about something like this?" Charlotte replied.
A dark cloud seemed to loom over Charles's head.
"Do you like him?" Charles asked.
At most, she only liked him; she only loved Charles!
Charlotte shook her head.
The color drained from Charles's face.
"What are you thinking? We're not in that kind of relationship, it's..."
David and Charlotte were very compatible research partners.
To outsiders, David seemed like a mad scientist, always tinkering with odd things in the house he inherited.
The twist came three days ago.
David's father's lawyer showed up with a will.
It concerned the money David was spending and the house he was living in.
The will stated that David's parents required him to marry before he turned 35, or he would lose control of the property and the savings.
David didn't care much about the savings.
But the house was non-negotiable; it came with a large piece of land.
The house contained David's lab.
Outside was his insect breeding area.
If he were forced to move, not only would much of his lab equipment become useless, but many of his insects would die.
And David would never find a place as suitable as this one.
"So you're marrying him because of this?" Charles's face turned grim with anger. "Is your family so poor that you can't buy that place?"
"I don't have any money," Charlotte said, lowering her eyes.
Charles was taken aback.
How could he not know she was broke?
Everyone thought Charlotte had money.
But in reality, all the prize money she won, the money her family gave her, and even the wedding gift from Christopher, she had invested entirely in the conservation of rare insects.
During this time, Charles had been secretly supporting her through various means.
Otherwise, she might have struggled to even afford food.
"And besides, following a normal life trajectory, I should be getting married. My father has been worried about this. You know his health hasn't been great these past few years."
Charles held back his frustration: "Does your father know his health isn't great?"
"The new bodyguards can take him down; how can he be in good health?" Charlotte replied seriously.
"Yeah, it took 16 new bodyguards to barely take him down."
Charlotte was momentarily speechless.
But she truly felt that Christopher was getting old.
"So you're going to sacrifice your marriage for these ridiculous reasons?" Charles laughed in anger.
"I thought, it doesn't matter who I marry, David is a good person and won't make things difficult for me."
Charles was slightly stunned: "What do you mean it doesn't matter who you marry? Marrying me and marrying David are the same?"
His heart was trembling.
He asked on purpose to confirm his thoughts.
Charlotte thought for a moment.
She looked up at Charles. "Except for you, everyone else is the same."
Charles's heart was about to break.
He immediately hugged Charlotte tightly: "Then don't make an exception for me. Marriage shouldn't be a compromise."
"What about David? I already promised him," Charlotte murmured, "He turns 35 next month."
"Buy the place and give it to him," Charles said succinctly, "Consider it our wedding gift."
"That logic doesn't make sense. We're getting married and giving him a gift?"
Before Charlotte could finish her thought.
A passionate kiss landed on her lips.
Just then, a horn blared outside."Listen up inside, you have twenty minutes left. If you don't come out, we're tearing the place down!"
Charlotte was startled; she had forgotten about this."Call Mrs. Solomon quickly!" Charlotte urged, "I really like this house; it can't be damaged!"
"Aren't you planning to sell it?" Charles asked.
