Chapter 551 First Date
"Yay!" Chicago happily changed clothes.
Humming a newly learned nursery rhyme, she trotted to the dining room.
"Babe, you seem pretty happy?" Janna’s secretary was also there, originally discussing work matters, but paused upon seeing Chicago.
"Good morning, Grandma and secretary," Chicago greeted.
"Good morning, Chicago!" The secretary's heart was melting from Chicago's cuteness.
"Charles’s teacher is sick, and I'm going with Charles and Burl to see him!" Chicago climbed into her chair and began to eat her breakfast eagerly.
Janna looked at Chicago affectionately. "Eat slowly. You will choke up on your food."
"Grandma, Mommy and Daddy have been working hard lately. They come home late and still check my homework and tell me bedtime stories. So, it's okay for Mommy and Daddy to sleep in a bit, and you shouldn't scold them," Chicago said softly.
It seemed she had forgotten that just a moment ago she had called them lazybones for not getting up at this time.
She was afraid Janna would reprimand her parents.
Janna laughed heartily. "Alright, Chicago, you worry about too many things!"
Chicago proceeded to consume her breakfast with gusto, finishing it promptly. Her plate was left immaculately clean, and not a drop of milk remained in her glass.
"Grandma, I'm heading out. Work hard and I'll see you tonight," Chicago said, before running over to hug Janna and give her a quick kiss. Then, she happily scampered off.
"Ms. Chicago is such a vibrant child," the secretary remarked, her face full of fond adoration.
"Isn't she though?" Janna watched as Chicago ran up to Charles, taking his hand. "That's why I can't slack off. I need to live longer, so I can protect Chicago and Charles. I want them to do whatever they wish under my watch, without anyone daring to bully Charles or Chicago!"
After Chicago, Charles, and Burl left for the hospital to visit Charles's mentor, the house felt eerily silent with everyone gone. When Fiona and Darwin finally woke up, they found themselves alone.
"Chicago went to the hospital with Charles and Burl to visit Charles's teacher," Darwin said after hanging up the phone, then cuddled back into Fiona's embrace, feeling sentimental. "At last, we have some alone time together."
In the past, he and Fiona had plenty of time to themselves. But since they reunited, these moments had been hard to come by due to the busy household filled with elders, children, and the overbearing duo of Thalassa and Burl.
"Darwin, stop it. I'm not young anymore... let me be," Fiona said cautiously.
Darwin chuckled. "Is my desire that obvious?"
"Yes!"
Fiona cradled Darwin's face in her hands and asked, "Are you still going to the office?"
He shook his head. "If you're working, I'll come with you."
"Hmm..." Fiona pondered for a moment. "Darwin, let's go on a date."
Darwin was taken aback by her suggestion. In all their years together, they had never really dated.
"Sure!" Darwin immediately agreed.
Then, in an extra clingy move, he wrapped his arms around Fiona, nuzzling her neck. "Fiona, can we have a date alone every week from now on?"
"People don't schedule dates as if they're tasks." Fiona lightly pinched Darwin's ear. "Stop being lazy, Darwin. Get up and change your clothes."
"Give me five minutes," Darwin said, glancing at the clock.
Fiona didn't have a chance to ask why he needed five minutes because Darwin captured her lips in a long, continuous kiss that lasted around five minutes.
Darwin, still desiring more of the moment, reluctantly halted his actions. Then, in a display of affection, he scooped Fiona up in a princess carry.
Fiona laughed, "What are you doing?"
"Carrying you to the walk-in closet," Darwin teased.
"Come on, Darwin, it's just a few steps. You're being a bit dramatic, don't you think?" Fiona chided with a playful grin.
They reached the walk-in closet, and Darwin set her down gently.
Then, he asked hesitantly, "Fiona, don't you notice something off about this place?"
Fiona glanced around. "No, hasn't it always been like this?"
"There are none of my clothes," Darwin mused, a flashback stirring within him. He could never forget the chill that had seized his heart the day he came back to the apartment, opened the closet, and saw that half of it was empty.
Fiona gave him a look. There he was, the abandoned man he felt like he had become. He couldn’t help but start a small complaint.
"I never said you couldn't hang them up," Fiona replied, reaching for the clothes she planned to wear. Darwin wrapped his arms around her from behind, a mild frustration in his embrace.
Fiona sighed softly and gave Darwin's arm a pat. "If you don't go get changed, we won't have enough time for our date."
He nodded. "Yeah."
Then, he kissed her cheek softly, "Fiona... I'm not dreaming, am I?"
Fiona turned to look at him. "What, do you dream about this often?"
Darwin shook his head, his eyes reddening slightly. "I can't dream of you at all."
He had even seen a hypnotist and consulted countless psychologists, desperately seeking a way to dream of Fiona.
"Let's not dwell on the past anymore," Fiona said, her eyes downcast. "It wasn't all great. Let's just be good to each other from now on."
He nodded again, and with Fiona's gentle urging, he went downstairs to change.
Darwin had plenty of casual clothes to match Fiona's outfit for the day. They ended up wearing a sort of impromptu couples' ensemble.
The date was pretty standard fare. They found a restaurant, had a bite to eat, and then, hand in hand, they strolled to the cinema to watch a movie.
It was prime holiday season, with a multitude of films on offer.
While picking, Fiona noticed a horror movie her studio had invested in and mentioned to Darwin, "Our studio put money into this one. I heard it passed the regulations not long ago, didn't expect it to be out so soon."
Without hesitation, Darwin chose that movie.
With a lot of the content edited for a younger audience, the film, which could have been decent, started off being quite dull.
The theater was sparsely populated, mostly by other couples.
So, it wasn't long before Darwin noticed, from the corner of his eye, a young couple making out passionately amidst the screams of the movie's lead actress.
Darwin glanced over at Fiona, who seemed unbothered by the horror unfolding on screen.
Even as she spoke, Fiona turned to look at Darwin. She caught Darwin staring at her with eager eyes. "What's the matter? Are you scared?" Fiona leaned in a little closer.
In the row in front of them, a young couple was locked in a passionate embrace, oblivious to the rest of the world. Fiona wasn't blind; she could clearly see what was going on.
Noticing Fiona moving closer, Darwin whispered, "In this entire theater, you're the only one actually watching the movie."
Others around them were either sweetly cuddling or kissing so intensely they seemed to lose all sense of reason.
Fiona glanced at the couple in front again and then leaned closer to Darwin. She touched his chin with her fingertips and stroked it gently, teasingly saying, "Darwin, can't you hold back even in public?"
