Chapter 1401
After Darwin found out the truth about his own past, he got super curious about Aiden.
Besides the diary, he wanted to dig up more info on Aiden.
Turns out, it wasn't hard to learn that Aiden had killed his pregnant fiancée later on; everyone knew about it back then.
This news hit Darwin like a ton of bricks.
From that moment, Darwin completely shut Aiden out of his mind, just like he did with Brooke. He didn't want to think about them or let anyone else bring them up.
When Hubert started talking, Darwin was momentarily stunned.
Then, Hubert began to spill the beans on the crimes Odette had committed.
Because of the meds and physical therapy, Darwin's reactions were a bit slow these days.
After listening to Hubert, he furrowed his brows and looked at him. "Just for such a ridiculous reason? She ruined her own sister's and Aiden's lives?"
"It wasn't just their lives," Hubert said, lowering his gaze.
Darwin's thoughts quickly jumped to another topic. "You said you found out the truth because of Fiona? How did she know? Did something happen to her?"
He visibly tensed up.
Hubert explained how Fiona had suspected Odette, had someone dig up Odette's grave to find the diary, and used it to bait Rose.
Learning that Fiona had orchestrated everything without any harm coming to her, Darwin visibly relaxed and then said out of nowhere, "She's always been the smartest."
Hubert looked at Darwin.
Darwin added, "To think of digging up a grave, she's really something."
Hubert smiled, weary and helpless. "In your eyes, is she perfect in every way?" he asked.
Darwin nodded. "Of course."
But then he hesitated, frowning slightly. "Not exactly."
Hubert grew curious. "What's not perfect?" he asked.
"She has a heart of stone. She hasn't come to see me even once," Darwin said, his tall frame slowly curling up under the blanket, turning his back to Hubert.
It was like he had suddenly fallen into an inescapable depression.
"She'd rather wait for you to come home than visit you here." Hubert gently patted Darwin's shoulder. "Darwin, I know what happened back then is a heavy burden for both of us. I'm telling you the truth because I hope you can come out of the shadows and find true freedom."
"And what about you?" Darwin suddenly asked.
Hubert seemed heavier than ever today.
He didn't respond immediately, staying silent for a moment.
In his mind, he saw Rose's hateful expression and heard her venomous words.
He patted Darwin's shoulder again.
Without another word, Hubert got up and left the hospital room.
The room was left with only a small bedside lamp, casting a dim light.
Hubert never mentioned it, but Darwin knew the lamp must have been a gift from Fiona. In the apartment they once shared, a similar lamp was hanging by the bed in the master bedroom.
When they first got together, Darwin had trouble sleeping. He couldn't sleep in complete darkness and would become very agitated.
Fiona had brought in this small lamp.
It had a tiny essential oil diffuser, and she would put a very mild, calming oil in it.
Darwin didn't even realize it himself.
But from the year Fiona came into his life, his insomnia had disappeared.
Time couldn't erase longing.
This was a truth Darwin had come to understand.
Lately, he missed Fiona more and more, to the point where he would cry into his pillow at night.
Even though he was fully cooperating with his treatment by taking medication, undergoing physical therapy, and even participating in hypnosis therapy.
