Chapter 595 No More Good Days
Darwin was dumbfounded. "Daddy's here, Daddy's here!" he quickly responded.
Chicago whimpered softly for a moment, then drifted back into a deep slumber, oblivious to the commotion around her.
"Take care of Chicago, Charles is also waiting at home. He's worried about his sister," Fiona murmured gently, her voice barely audible in the tense atmosphere.
Darwin hesitated, his thoughts scattered. "Bring Xavier too. Kenny..." He trailed off, his words faltering as uncertainty clouded his expression.
Fiona sighed helplessly, understanding the weight of the situation.
"Brother, you can go back with peace of mind. Thalassa and I will accompany her," Kenny offered generously, his voice steady and reassuring.
"Alright," Darwin replied with a nod, a mixture of gratitude and apprehension etched on his features.
Fiona leaned down to press a tender kiss on Chicago's forehead, then turned to Darwin, planting another kiss on his cheek. "I'll be back soon," she promised softly.
"Okay," Darwin murmured in response, watching Fiona and Chicago disappear into the waiting car.
As the car door closed with a decisive thud, Fiona turned away, her steps heavy with unresolved tension as she made her way toward another vehicle nearby.
"Are you really going?" Fiona inquired, her voice tinged with concern as she addressed Thalassa and Kenny.
Without a moment's hesitation, Thalassa replied, "I have to give Lilian a slap in the face, otherwise I will regret it for the rest of my life!"
Kenny nodded in agreement, his resolve firm. "Yeah."
Fiona remained silent, allowing them to follow their own convictions without interference.
By now, Lilian had been escorted to the police station by Mike, amidst a flurry of chaos and commotion. The repercussions of the incident reverberated throughout the community, prompting a flood of concerned calls to the authorities.
The iron gate creaked open, revealing Lilian's battered figure. Blood stains marred her clothes as she lifted her gaze, a manic grin spreading across her lips. "It's a pity I didn't kill that little beast. If I had known this would happen, I would have chopped off her head the first time I saw her."
Fiona's expression hardened as she approached Lilian, taking a seat opposite her, her demeanor calm yet resolute.
"You, born into a troubled family, once had the chance for a better life because of Darwin. How did you descend to this point?" Fiona questioned, her voice steady despite the turmoil within.
The smile faded from Lilian's face, replaced by a cold, calculating glare. "Fiona, what do you have to be proud of? If not for your privileged background, do you think Darwin would have chosen you? And if it weren't for Anniston's deceit leading me to marry Simon, would it still be you carrying Darwin's child now?"
"I don't know," Fiona admitted, shaking her head. "But..."
A faint smile graced Fiona's lips as she decided to confront Lilian head-on.
"I am surprised you were together with him for two or three years, yet you didn’t make out even once. After all, when he was with me, Darwin was quite obsessed. I heard he hasn't even held your hand," Fiona said, noting the hatred in Lilian's eyes that could almost draw blood.
Lilian's features contorted with rage, her words dripping with venom. "Do you believe that nonsense? If he hasn't been intimate with me, then where did this child in my belly come from?" she retorted defiantly, proudly displaying her swollen abdomen.
Fiona's gaze lingered on Lilian's belly, her expression unreadable. "Considering all you've been through, this child should be healthy," she remarked calmly.
"Right?" Lilian sneered, her tone mocking. "I heard you faced several threatened miscarriages during your pregnancy."
She sought to provoke Fiona, to elicit a reaction, but Fiona remained composed, her demeanor unwavering.
For the first time in a long while, Fiona's control faltered slightly, just a flicker of emotion upon their initial meeting, a moment of shock and disbelief toward Lilian and disappointment toward Darwin.
But Lilian craved more than a fleeting reaction; she yearned for Fiona's downfall, for hysteria mirroring her own.
Yet, all she received in return was a subtle, enigmatic smile from Fiona, a silent defiance that spoke volumes, deflating Lilian's hopes of witnessing her adversary's unraveling.
"Lilian," Fiona spoke slowly, her voice measured and deliberate, "If you hadn't caused this trouble, you would probably have ended up in some corner of Southeast Asia, living a slightly difficult life, raising the child in your belly. But you were too greedy, and you reached out to Chicago. Then there would be no such good days for you."
"But I'm pregnant, what can you do to me?" Lilian retorted sarcastically.
"What happened this afternoon was just a mental breakdown, a moment of uncontrolled behavior," Chicago reassured, her voice tinged with desperation. "Chicago was fine. How many years do you think they can keep me locked up? I can give birth to Darwin's child in prison. Unmarried and married children are treated the same, and in the future, he can also take Darwin's money..."
"Yes, but on the condition that the child in your belly is his," Fiona calmly interrupted.
"Of course she is!" Lilian asserted.
"Is she?" Fiona smiled. "Lilian, you still don't understand Darwin enough. Don’t you think that when he woke up from his vegetative state, he would handle the lingering risks from that period?"
Lilian froze.
"You know that Darwin's car accident was Anniston's doing, right?" Fiona continued, "The relationship between them had already exploded way back during the accident. Do you think Darwin would give Anniston a chance to create a child of his own?"
In reality, beyond this initial motive, there lay a more significant one. Darwin harbored a profound aversion to the idea of a child resembling himself coming into existence, one conceived solely for familial inheritance rather than parental love. This realization prompted Darwin to swiftly orchestrate the switch of the sample without Anniston's awareness.
"It's impossible!" Lilian immediately shouted in denial.
"Don't worry," Fiona said lightly with a faint smile, "This child isn't Darwin's, she isn't even yours."
Lilian was stunned.
Then, with a face of disbelief, Lilian said, "Fiona, do you even know what you're saying? Are you the one who's gone mad, or am I?"
"Do you fail to recognize Anniston's intense disdain towards you? Isn't it clear to her that your ambitions are transparent? She desires this child solely to assert control over you and the Solomon family. Why would she desire a child who would have a mother like you, one who would inevitably compete with her?" Fiona's tone remained composed, yet each word landed on Lilian like a weighty blow.
"From the beginning, she didn't use your egg."
Lilian retorted, "It's impossible, you're lying! You slut! Don't think you can break me like this, or deceive me!"
Fiona didn't back down either. She directly handed two paternity tests to Lilian. One proving the genetic relationship between the embryo and Darwin, and the other proving the genetic relationship between Lilian and the child. Both showed no biological connection.
"It's fake!" Lilian exclaimed.
"The child is in your belly, you have plenty of opportunities to verify it," Fiona said nonchalantly.
Lilian clenched the paternity tests tightly in her hand, her veins visibly straining under the pressure. Fiona's earlier words echoed in her mind. Yes, Anniston harbored a deep dislike for her. And yes, Lilian did harbor ambitions to wield the child as a means of gaining control over the Solomon family. Certainly, Anniston, the cunning strategist, couldn't be oblivious to this, thus indicating potential implications for the child.
Her hand trembled violently as she gazed up at Fiona, seeking answers. Lilian's once perfect life, once envied by all, had unraveled so disastrously today, all because of Fiona.
It was her!
It was all because of Fiona!
"I'll kill you!!" she screamed, lunging toward Fiona.
