Chapter 1423

During those five years, Fiona never held any grudges against Darwin.

After all, he had spent money to help her keep her grandmother around and had given her a well-paying job where she could learn a lot.

They were never in a romantic relationship to begin with.

So, it was normal for Darwin not to invest any emotions.

However, when Darwin started to show feelings he had never shown before, things changed.

If he loved her, then everything he had done before became cruel.

After dinner, Darwin tossed the dishes into the dishwasher.

Then, he and Fiona went for a walk hand in hand.

"By the way, Calista from the flower shop said a batch of sunflowers will arrive in a few days. Sunflowers are Chicago's favorite flower. When we go back to Emerald Pool, you should buy a bunch for her." Fiona said, swinging their joined hands.

A couple, not sure if they were dating or married, walked past them.

As they brushed shoulders, Darwin felt inexplicably happy.

He and Fiona were just like the most ordinary couple in the world, having dinner together and then going for a walk hand in hand.

This feeling filled him with immense satisfaction and a lot of regret.

He could have had this precious ordinary life a long time ago.

"Are you listening?" Fiona squeezed Darwin's hand.

"Yeah, I heard you. I'll buy them all." Darwin replied with a smile in his voice. "But if we buy flowers for Chicago, what should we get for Charles?"

The couple exchanged a glance and fell into deep thought.

It wasn't easy because Charles didn't really have any personal preferences. He already had the best electronic gadgets.

"I have an idea that might make him happy." Fiona said, smiling at Darwin.

"What is it?" Darwin asked eagerly.

"Summer is here, and this season has even more insects than our last camping trip."

Mentioning the last camping trip made Darwin frown.

But Fiona didn't notice. She was still thinking about how to make Charles happy. "So, you'll have to do some planning over the next couple of days. After we enjoy our time together, we'll take the kids on a road trip!"

"A road trip?"

"Yeah, we'll pick the most scenic route and camp along the way." Fiona nodded. "But Charlotte wants to take her high school entrance exams next year, so we can't go for too long. Two weeks should be enough, and we can't let her studies fall behind. Charles can help her with that!"

"Sweetheart, Charles is still in second grade. You want him to tutor Charlotte for her exams?" Darwin sighed, feeling helpless.

"My son can do anything he sets his mind to." Fiona said, excited about the spontaneous trip. "And we have to bring Chicago's art supplies!"

Seeing her so happy, Darwin smiled and nodded. "Alright, we'll do it your way."

Fiona got a bit tired from walking, so they headed back to the apartment.

It was almost eleven at night.

Fiona went to take a shower, leaving the door unlocked. Darwin soon joined her.

By the time they were done, it was nearly midnight.

Darwin, looking content, helped the exhausted Fiona dry her hair.

Then he held her as they went to sleep.

The room was dark.

Darwin didn't mind.

But because of the time difference, he couldn't sleep.

He thought about what Fiona had said earlier about their last camping trip and asked, even though he already knew the answer, "During our last camping trip, had you already decided to send me to Hubert?"
