Chapter 1427
Rose was stunned for a moment.
"I've thought it through. Your reason for wanting to kill Darwin," Hubert said, pacing in front of Rose. "Your motives aren't the same as your mom's."
"Odette wanted Aiden dead because she couldn't stand seeing her sister happy with someone else. Plus, she had a crush on Aiden and, since she couldn't have him, she decided to ruin him."
"But you, aside from following your mom's orders, wanted to be part of Fiona's family, right? You wanted to be close to her, to be treated with her kindness and patience. You craved the warmth and acceptance from her and her friends, and you were obsessed with the idea that Darwin would turn out like Aiden."
"You thought Darwin would drag Fiona down, mess up her happy life. Fiona might end up dead because of Darwin, just like Marisole. Before his treatment, he had already shown harmful behavior towards Fiona."
"So, instead of your mom's sneaky method of switching meds, you went for a more direct approach. You wanted to end Darwin's life with a single injection."
"I was wrong!" Rose broke down, falling to her knees in front of Hubert. "Hubert, you know my mom brainwashed me since I was a kid. I couldn't control myself! Take me back to Cyberia. I promise I'll never come to Armie again or bother Fiona and her family. Hubert, we can go back to how we were, just the two of us."
Looking at the anguished Rose, suddenly, he laughed.
Hubert had a gentle, handsome face, and when he smiled, a small dimple appeared at the corner of his mouth, sweet and comforting.
But at this moment, his laughter sent a chill down Rose's spine.
Rose looked up at him in shock.
Hubert slowly crouched down, tilting his head as he looked at Rose, as if she were a funny joke.
"Hubert?" His tone was mocking. "My parents didn't have a child who would use their deaths to hurt me."
"Hubert, I was out of my mind back then. You're my only family in this world, but you sided with Fiona and betrayed me. I lost control for a moment; that wasn't my true intention!" Rose hurriedly explained.
Hubert continued, "Rose, you've been with me for so long, working at my firm for over a decade. How have you not grown at all?"
"I will improve!" Rose quickly promised.
This place was more terrifying than she had ever imagined. She didn't want to stay a second longer. She was willing to give up anything, even her pride.
"You misunderstand me deeply," Hubert replied calmly. "I've lived my whole life in the shadow of my parents' tragic deaths. I threw myself into studying psychology and pharmacology, and I was consumed with avenging Brooke from a young age. Rose, do you think I could ever be a normal person?"
Rose looked at the man in front of her in terror.
Seeing the smile in his eyes, she shivered, a coldness enveloping her.
"You mentioned before that I liked Chelsea?" Hubert exhaled, thinking for a moment. "Strictly speaking, I was indeed fascinated by her. She has a strong soul that I envied and wanted. From the first time I met her, she became a subject of my human observation. During the five years she worked as a stand-in, most of her choices defied the profile I had created for someone like her. After she stopped being a stand-in, she continued to surprise me. She was so interesting. But you..."
Hubert looked at Rose with disdain for the first time.
In the past, he had looked at Rose with helplessness, affection, or tolerance, but never disdain.
Even when others criticized Rose for her shortcomings, Hubert had never looked down on her.
