Chapter 17
She had to receive an IV drip after the wound was stitched due to the blood loss.
She only agreed after confirming that the liquid being infused wouldn't affect the baby.
With the arrival of fall, many people caught the cold. The infusion center was crowded. Fiona found a corner and curled up there. She was exhausted and blood-deprived, making her drowsy.
Just as she was about to fall asleep, Miss Ford, who had been gone for a while, came back in a hurry. She bought a can of chicken soup from somewhere.
"Ms. Fiona, it’s still hot. Drink a few sips to regain your strength!”
Fiona was touched.
"I’m fine, you should go back to work.”
"What work? You helped me retrieve R&K's order. The commission is enough for me to live a comfortable life!"
Miss Ford laughed. Then, she remained silent for a moment.
"I wrongly accused you before, I'm sorry," she finally said.
Fiona shook her head but didn't speak. It was impossible for her to say such words.
Miss Ford understood. Apologies were necessary, but forgiveness was not guaranteed.
In the end, Miss Ford was called away by a work phone call. She had to go and address some issues that had arisen on a project she was previously responsible for. Before leaving, she added Fiona on WhatsApp, feeling a bit concerned. Inside were numerous unread messages.
Fiona's eyes were sore, and she glanced briefly before setting her phone aside. In her drowsy state, she felt as if someone had come up to her. Her eyelids felt heavy.
She tried to keep her eyes open, but failed.
After a while, something warm was placed over her, and a familiar scent enveloped her. Fiona couldn't recall whose scent it was, but it made her feel at ease, and she peacefully fell asleep.
Meanwhile, Darwin was sitting across from Fiona. His gaze was heavy as he looked at the person who even in sleep furrowed their brows. After picking up Hathaway at the airport today, the original plan was to take her to the old house to meet the Solomon family.
However, things went differently. He inexplicably brought her to the company. Upon hearing about the sales department, he took Hathaway there as well. He originally thought he would see the vulnerable Fiona. Instead, he saw her covered in blood.
After watching for a while, Fiona's IV bag was running out of medicine. Darwin called for a nurse. The nurse arrived and saw a tall and handsome man, visibly agitated.
"Please be gentle, she's afraid of pain," Darwin urged, noticing the nurse's impatient movements.
The nurse hesitated for a moment.
Then she chuckled, saying, "Someone who doesn't use anesthesia when treating wounds or stitching them up is afraid of pain?"
"What did you say?" Darwin seemed to have misunderstood.
"She...she said...she doesn't use anesthesia,” the nurse said, seemingly intimidated by Darwin's presence.
No anesthesia?
Why?
An invisible force pulled at Darwin's heart fiercely.
She was definitely afraid of pain!
At that moment, Fiona's phone rang.
Seeing this, the nurse quickly left.
Fiona, still half-asleep, picked up her phone without paying attention to who was calling.
It was Ashton.
She answered, her tone softer than usual in her half-asleep state, almost like she was coquettish. "Babe, are you awake?"
Darwin stood there, thunderstruck.
"Babe"? Who was she calling "babe"?
Fiona's social circle was very simple. In short, it revolved solely around him, with no one else.
So where did this "babe" suddenly come from?
Was it Harold?
Or someone from the company?
Ashton was on the other end of the line, complaining about a hangover headache, swearing never to drink again. Fiona chuckled fondly. As Fiona glanced up, her smile froze.
"I have something to attend to on my end, so I won't continue talking now," she immediately hung up the phone.
“Why did you hang up? We were chatting. What’s the matter?” Darwin coldly asked.
"Mr. Darwin, why are you here?" Fiona's facial expression changed, and she calmly asked with her pale face devoid of any color. Broken shards of glass had left a shallow trace of blood on her cheek. Just now, Darwin had been filled with pity upon seeing her weak and pitiful appearance, but now all of that was gone.
"Hathaway was worried about you, so she asked me to come and check on you," he said indifferently and coldly.
Fiona’s fingertips trembled.
Indeed...
Miss Hathaway, she truly is both beautiful and kind-hearted.
Then she lowered her eyelids and nodded slightly, "Mr. Darwin has seen me, I'm fine, you can go back now."
Darwin's face quickly turned a sullen color. He stood up.
"Fiona, you really don't know what's good for you," he said before turning around to leave.
But then, for some reason, he stopped in his tracks, turned his head slightly, and looked down at Fiona with a condescending gaze.
"The person who just called you, was it Rupert Wells?" he asked.
Fiona was suddenly taken aback.
Rupert Wells?
She hadn’t heard that name in years…
"What's it to you?" Fiona replied impatiently. "Mr. Darwin, I am no longer the canary in your cage. Where I want to fly is my own business, so please show some respect!"
Darwin rubbed his forehead and smiled.
"Fiona, neither Bella nor Hathaway could make a ripple in your emotions, but it had to be Rupert Wells, huh?" Darwin stared at Fiona as if trying to kill her with his eyes.
Fiona gritted her teeth.
She should explain.
Rupert Wells was just a senior who had shown an interest in her back in the day. Around the time she was about to accept him, all the issues with her grandmother and debts had arisen.
Perhaps it was because Rupert Wells had found out about her embarrassing past, Darwin had formed an impression of him. Since Darwin still cared about Rupert Wells, just let him think what he wants. Seeing her remain silent, Darwin seemed to have found his answer. His smile became even more sarcastic.
"Before me, you hold your pride so high, refusing to exchange it for any sum of money. Have you forgotten how Rupert Wells humiliated you in front of me back then?"
Fiona still said nothing.
In her mind, the image of that elegant senior and his hysterical anger resurfaced.
"Fiona, I misjudged you! You really sold yourself for money. How could you be that kind of person, despicable and shameless! You make me sick!"
Darwin despised her silence. He would rather have her fiercely counterattack him with words.
Rather than this, where she seemed to ignore him.
"The expression on his face showed indifference. 'Fiona, your pride is nothing special,' Darwin said as he turned around and walked away without looking back.
Fiona was stunned for a moment, glancing at her coat that was about to slide off her body. She looked in the direction Darwin had left and mumbled, 'Your coat... you forgot to take it...'
When Fiona left the hospital, it was almost eleven o'clock. Outside, a drizzle had started falling at some point. Fiona stood at the entrance, opening the ride-hailing app. It was difficult to get a taxi at this hour due to the nearby bar street.
After waiting for a few minutes without receiving any ride requests, Fiona was about to walk toward the roadside to see if she could hail a taxi. However, a black Maybach slowly pulled up right beside her. Fiona thought it might be picking someone else up and made way.
At that moment, the passenger side window rolled down. 'Ms. Fiona!'"
