Chapter 37 Truly Pathetic
Fiona was all set to take at least one car down with her.
But she never thought this ride had top-notch safety features, like automatic braking and emergency avoidance.
In the end, her car spun out a few times and crashed into the greenbelt.
After a loud bang, she felt dizzy, tasted blood in her mouth, and all she could hear was a ringing in her ears.
Through the cracked windshield, she saw a few folks stumbling out of their cars.
A fat dude with a steel pipe was heading her way.
Fiona raised her hand and manually locked the car again.
She really couldn't tell if her luck was good or bad.
The doc had said she had trouble conceiving, but after a short time without protection, she got pregnant.
She was being chased by kidnappers and ready to die, but at the last second, the car slowed down and avoided danger, and she didn't die.
A loud noise came from Fiona's side.
The fat dude couldn't open the door and started smashing the window.
After a few hits, glass shards flew out, grazing Fiona's cheek.
It didn't hurt much.
The window was about to shatter completely.
The front of the car, all banged up, suddenly made a loud noise and started spewing thick smoke.
Fiona vaguely heard people outside yelling, "Mack, this car's gonna blow!"
The fat dude smashing the window looked at Fiona with pure hate, not ready to give up.
Fiona glanced at him.
"Bitch, just wait to be burned to death!" Mack snarled, "I'll be right here watching. When you're crispy, I'll take you back and chop you up to feed the dogs!"
Fiona sneered.
Why would she worry about being eaten by dogs after she's already dead?
Before leaving, Mack seemed worried the fire wouldn't start, so he lit a lighter and tossed it into the thick smoke.
Fiona cursed him.
With all that smoke, the lighter would go out in no time.
But then, sparks started flying from the smoke.
Fiona fell silent.
Mack and his crew, seeing the sparks, freaked out and ran, watching from a distance.
Fiona couldn't help but laugh.
She looked at the flames.
She saw Darwin's back in the flames.
Fiona's heart ached sharply.
She thought, 'Fiona, you're truly pathetic! What's so hard to let go of about him?'
"Fiona!" In the chaos, she thought she heard someone calling her.
It sounded like Harold.
Harold was such a good guy, humiliated by Darwin because of her.
She hadn't even properly apologized.
And she had accepted his gift but didn't give him a birthday present.
Now she owed him big time.
The car door suddenly shook.
Fiona looked out.
"Fiona!" Outside the broken window was Harold's extremely anxious face.
Fiona snapped back to reality.
After confirming several times, she realized it was really Harold.
She mustered her strength to try to open the car door.
But she had locked it earlier, and the door was all bent out of shape and wouldn't budge.
The flames grew stronger.
Fiona was genuinely worried the car would explode.
"Harold, go, the car's gonna blow!" she weakly shouted.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
She had no clue if Harold heard her.
He was outside, yanking at the door like a madman.
Thick smoke was filling up the car.
Fiona, already on the edge, blacked out.
When she came to, she wasn't in the car anymore.
It was getting dark, and she was cradled in Harold's arms.
A bunch of cops were shoving Mack and his goons into a police van.
"Fiona, you're awake!" Harold's face was smudged with soot, his eyes red like he'd been crying, "Are you in pain? The ambulance is on its way, just hang in there!"
Fiona weakly shook her head.
"Why are you here?" she asked, "Didn't you already go back?"
Harold shook his head, looking a bit hurt. "No, I got a ticket for the same flight as you, so I didn't leave."
"I'm sorry," Fiona said softly.
"It's not your fault." Harold looked down, avoiding her eyes. "That jerk Darwin couldn't protect you. You almost died because of his mess!"
"Yeah." Fiona closed her eyes.
She thought about that desperate and ridiculous call for help.
She added, "Tell me, how did you find me?"
"I saw you get in the car," Harold replied, "Then I followed, but the car suddenly took a different route. I knew something was up and had the driver turn around, and I called the cops. When I mentioned the license plate, they said it was a recently hijacked car."
Because the area near New Port was super desolate, the roads weren't too complicated, but lots of places were empty, with long stretches of road without surveillance.
Mack had picked that spot on purpose.
"Luckily, I found you." Harold was shaking as he held Fiona.
Fiona had narrowly escaped death.
The ambulance showed up fast.
Fiona was placed on a stretcher, and Harold directed the paramedics to carefully lift her into the ambulance.
The doc did a quick check on Fiona. "Not too bad, just need some anti-inflammatory meds."
"Doc," Fiona said, "If it's not serious, don't give me a shot. Just clean and bandage my wounds."
"Fiona, listen to the doc," Harold coaxed.
"No." Fiona shook her head.
"Why?" The doc was puzzled.
"I'm pregnant," Fiona replied calmly.
Harold, sitting beside her, seemed to freeze instantly.
"You didn't know?" The doc asked Harold in shock, "What kind of husband are you? Your wife is pregnant, and you didn't even know to be careful while driving? This must be a recent pregnancy, right? My God! Get to the hospital for a check-up to see how the baby is doing! You young people!"
Harold couldn't hear a word the doc was saying.
He just couldn't believe Fiona was pregnant.
The car arrived at the hospital.
Fiona was taken to the emergency room for a bunch of tests.
"You're lucky, the baby is still there, but there's a risk of miscarriage," the doc said after checking the report, prescribing a ton of meds to keep the pregnancy stable. "Take good care of yourself, no more accidents!"
Fiona's heart eased a bit.
But she was still scared. "Thank you, doc."
Fiona was then kept for observation overnight.
After the medical staff left, she looked helplessly at Harold, who hadn't said a word except to talk to the medical staff.
