Chapter 1347
Charles stared at Darwin, really taking him in.
Even though Darwin had been looking after himself, he seemed skinnier, and his lips were pale.
On the way here, Charles had done some digging. This place was a mental health research center.
Hearing Darwin's words, Charles slowly walked over, gently placed his small hand on Darwin's, and then suddenly gripped Darwin's fingers tightly.
'He must have gone through a lot,' Charles thought, as tears started to fill his eyes.
Darwin quickly pulled Charles into a hug, holding him and gently patting his back. "I'm sorry; it's my fault for making you all sad."
"Daddy, it's okay!" Chicago exclaimed. "Mommy said you're just a little sick. Everyone gets sick, and once you're better, everything will be fine!"
Charles didn't say anything.
He rested his forehead on Darwin's shoulder.
Darwin was so thin that Charles could feel the bony frame beneath his clothes.
Was Darwin not eating enough?
Charles didn't speak, but tears kept falling.
"It's cold outside. Darwin, let's go inside and talk," Kenny said.
Darwin looked up at Kenny, his eyes full of gratitude.
Kenny gave a slight nod, understanding everything without saying a word.
The back door led to a greenhouse, and Darwin held each of their hands as they walked in. Chicago curiously looked at the large-leaved plants inside the glass enclosure.
In his mind, he began to paint a vivid and fantastical picture.
Hubert had prepared a very homely room, with a hospital bed and a living room area. The coffee table in the living room was filled with snacks that kids loved.
As soon as Charles entered, he realized this wasn't Darwin's usual hospital room.
"Fiona asked me to bring some of your favorite fruits," Kenny said as he entered, pulling out a few hard-to-get fruits from his backpack.
They were all fruits Darwin loved.
Darwin was very picky, and the hospital's fruit had thick skins and dry flesh.
"Daddy, Mommy is really busy with work, so she couldn't come this time, but she misses you a lot, I swear!" Chicago clung to Darwin's side, looking up earnestly to speak for Fiona.
"I know," Darwin said, gently touching Chicago's nose with his own. "I might need a few more months before I can come home, so I'll need Chicago to help take care of Mommy a bit longer."
"Okay." Chicago nodded seriously.
Not long after, Hubert arrived.
Hubert was good-looking, and Chicago immediately decided he was a nice person.
Charles was different.
He knew Hubert was Darwin's primary doctor and had many questions, like about Darwin's current condition, whether he was eating well enough, and why he seemed thinner.
Charles also wanted to say that gaining weight wasn't easy for Darwin, and Fiona had taken a long time to help him put on some pounds.
But in front of Darwin and Chicago, Charles didn't ask.
With Hubert's company, Darwin could leave the research center.
Since it was Christmas time, the festive atmosphere was everywhere.
Darwin took Chicago and Charles to a dessert shop, bought them delicious treats, and even picked out an extra one, beautifully wrapped by the staff, for Chicago and Charles to take back to Fiona.
They also went to Cyberia's famous indoor amusement park and had a great time together.
Time spent with loved ones always flew by, and before they knew it, it had grown dark, with the streets filled with lovely Christmas lights.
Kenny located Hubert and said, "It won't hurt to wait a little longer. Let Darwin put Chicago and Charles to bed first before we take him back to the research center."
Hubert watched the three of them, sensing their reluctance to part.
