Chapter 149 Absolutely Adorable Little One

Darwin's vigilant expression dissolved into laughter just before he vanished, leaving Lilian in awe. A realization hit her: Darwin's longing for the child he and Fiona had lost might still linger. Perhaps he yearned for a child of his own. Touching her stomach, Lilian bit her lip with resolve.

At the orthopedic ward, Wendy led the little one away while they argued about Stuart's tears. Ashton, peeling an apple for his grandmother, looked on with curiosity.

"Weren't they all fine this morning? Why argue now?" Ashton mused.

Like a nimble monkey, the little one escaped Wendy's hold and clambered onto Ashton.

"Godmother, a bad man bullied Wendy, but I protected her. She's being unreasonable and blaming me. I won't be nice to her anymore!" the child declared.

"What bad man?" Ashton asked, his brow furrowing as he regarded Wendy.

Wendy shrank back. "Just a gentleman passing by..." She couldn't dare reveal the near mishap, or she'd face severe consequences.

"Why is he bad? How did he bully Wendy?" Ashton probed gently.

The child's mother, tied up with a project on Wall Street, would return to Bay City soon. Wendy knew she'd face wrath if any harm came to the child on her watch.

The little one, glancing at Wendy, corrected herself, "He wasn't bad. I accidentally hit his leg with the flower. He wasn't mad and even returned it to me."

Wendy exhaled in relief.

On the bed, Ashton's grandmother beamed. "Chicago, did you enjoy the sunshine?"

Despite her age and recent accident involving a banana peel and a broken leg, Grandma's spirits were high, especially with the company of the little ones. They were adored by all, charming and articulate beyond their years.

"Mhmm!" Chicago nodded, her eyes sparkling at Grandma.

"Oh, so adorable!" Grandma cooed. "Ashton, give Chicago some apple!"

As Ashton obliged, cutting an apple slice for Chicago, his grandmother turned to him, her affection turning to inquiry. "Your friend's children are delightful. When will you marry and have some of your own?"

Ashton sighed, "I would if I could, Grandma. I just haven't found the right person yet."

"Seize the opportunity while I'm here," Grandma urged, her eyes moist. "Otherwise, what will I tell your father in the afterlife?"

Feeling the weight of her words, Ashton excused himself and took Chicago from the room.

Chicago clung to his neck. "Mommy Auntie lied about the paper!" she whispered once they were alone.

Ashton patted her back. "When did she lie?"

"When you and Uncle kissed, Chicago saw it!" she confided.

Ashton froze, then reassured her, "That's our secret with Mommy Auntie. Don't tell, okay?"

"Chicago won't," she promised. "Mommy said not to gossip about secrets!"

"Your mommy is wise," Ashton replied, his relief palpable.

Across the ocean, Chelsea was celebrated for another triumph. At a banquet, diverse faces cheered as she announced bonuses and a Bora trip for her team. After her speech, she left the festivities and headed home.

"Sis, why so early from the celebration?" Burl slouched on the sofa, gaming console in hand.

"Did you lose again?" Fiona asked, hanging her coat and approaching Burl with a knowing look.

He remembered that she called herself Chicago.

"Wendy..." Chicago turned around.

Huh? Where was Wendy? At that moment, the private room door was knocked on again. This time, no one called out to come in, and the door opened by itself. Wendy rushed in, anxious.

Darwin looked up.

"Oh, it's you, kind sir!" Wendy's face flushed. "Have you seen my miss?"

Darwin frowned and sighed, picking up Chicago.

"Miss!" Wendy nearly cried with relief, hurrying over to take her. Unbeknownst to her, Chicago was captivated by the dishes on the table, seemingly forgetting she had just eaten.

"Chris, what delicious food is that?" she asked Darwin in her childish voice.

Darwin's heart softened at the question.

"Which one?" He settled Chicago on his lap. "Chris will choose for you."

"Sir, my miss can't just eat anything!" Wendy interjected quickly.

"Then stay by her side and guide her," Darwin replied, his tone cooling as he addressed Wendy.

Wendy was determined to whisk her miss away, but Chicago was content in her seat.

"Wendy, Chris is nice, don't be scared!"

Wendy was stunned. Despite his good looks, this man didn't seem trustworthy.

"Mr. Solomon, is this child from your friend's family? She's adorable!" Newton, who had worked well with Darwin over the years, looked at Chicago with affection.

"Little friend, would you like grandpa to hold you?" Chicago remained wary of strangers, snuggling closer to Darwin and shaking her head.

"Old man, you've scared her," Darwin chided.

Newton laughed heartily.

Darwin then asked Chicago, "What do you want to eat?" She pointed to the roast duck. "This!"

He checked with Wendy, who nodded, tears in her eyes. Darwin carefully prepared a bite-sized portion for Chicago, who took a bite, chewed thoughtfully, and then her eyes sparkled. "It's delicious!"
