Chapter 93 Entrusting the Kid
The conference room blew up into total chaos.
"No way! How the hell does Jane have a daughter? She's been dead for ages!" Alice jumped up, pointing a finger at Zackery. "You're reading it wrong! I could sue you for this!"
"Mrs. Rhoads, chill out. Mr. Kelly made a video with a notary to avoid any drama after the inheritance announcement." Zackery raised his hand to calm everyone down.
The assistant quickly started the projector.
After a bit of static, the video came on.
Joshua was lying in a hospital bed, looking weak but kinda lively.
In the corner of the screen, the date showed it was recorded six months ago.
The beginning was pretty standard stuff.
Then he said, "The last part, and all my real estate, I want to leave to my adopted daughter Jane Kelly, no, to Carla Woods' daughter."
"This is nuts!" Alice yelled.
On the screen, Joshua kept talking, "Since Jane's passed away, and I don't have any contact info for my granddaughter, I've asked my dear friend Janna Rhoads to find her."
Janna covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face.
She had no clue Jane had a kid out there, or that Joshua still thought of her as a dear friend.
"Fake! No way!" Alice still wouldn't accept it.
Joshua took a breath.
Then he looked at the camera and said, "I also want Janna Rhoads to take care of my ashes. Janna... please take me home."
"Okay... okay." Janna sobbed uncontrollably.
Stuart was worried.
If he had known, he wouldn't have let Fiona leave.
Now, who was gonna comfort Janna?
"Mom." Ken was just as confused.
Because of this crazy will—his wife had been switched at birth and went through so much, yet her father didn't leave her a dime.
Jane was already dead? And Alice knew the whole time?
Janna raised her hand to stop Ken from coming closer.
"Mr. Fields, did Joshua leave any other messages?" she asked Zackery.
Zackery sighed. "He didn't want to keep you in the dark about Jane's whereabouts; he genuinely didn't know. Let's talk privately." He glanced at Alice and Ken.
"Why can't you say it here?" Alice demanded loudly.
She was about to lose it.
Why was Joshua still thinking about that fake Jane in the end?
Everything Jane had originally belonged to her, even her husband.
She wanted to take back what was hers, but Jane didn't allow it. So what if she used some means?
She even considered Jane's feelings.
She didn't just find any random guy for Jane but brought over her admirer, Nick.
Why did Joshua have to be so heartless to her?
"Because Mr. Kelly was worried that if the wrong person overheard and found Jane's daughter before Ms. Rhoads, she might be in danger," Zackery said bluntly.
He was Nick's close friend.
He knew everything about what happened back then.
He despised Alice, the venomous woman.
Alice froze.
Zackery and Janna left the conference room.
"Regarding Carla's background, Mr. Kelly only knew the basics. Her biological parents were involved in special confidential work when they were young. After the child was born, they entrusted her to distant relatives. But the relatives were negligent, and the child was kidnapped. By the time they returned from their mission, the child was gone," Zackery said solemnly, "By then, more than ten years had passed."
Janna's face was like a storm cloud.
She had a rough idea of what the couple did.
Zackery added, "This couple was under policy protection and had changed identities many times. By coincidence, they found Jane when she was in trouble and took her away."
"No wonder we couldn't find them no matter how hard we tried," Janna said, frowning.
"It wasn't that hard to find them. The couple just changed their identities one last time and used some means to destroy their records," Zackery replied.
"So Joshua saying Jane was dead, is that false?" Janna clung to a sliver of hope.
Zackery shook his head. "Jane contacted Mr. Kelly before she died, roughly explaining her situation and mentioning the child. Mr. Kelly thought she wanted to entrust the child to him, so he wanted to see her. But Jane said she just missed him and mentioned that her daughter was pure and lovely, wanting her to grow up carefree and never get close to the dirty world of the tycoons."
Janna couldn't hold back her tears again. "It's my fault!"
"Ms. Rhoads, you were indeed out of line back then, but you were not the instigator!" Zackery gritted his teeth. "In any case, I hope you can fulfill Mr. Kelly's last wish and find his granddaughter."
"That girl!" Janna suddenly grabbed Zackery's wrist. "How old is she?"
Zackery looked at Janna. "Ms. Rhoads, do you think Mr. Kelly entrusted the child to you for no reason?"
Janna trembled violently.
Her face turned pale. "Ken's child? My granddaughter?"
Zackery gently removed Janna's hand. "I still have to handle the follow-up to the will. If you need anything, contact me by phone."
Finally, he handed Joshua's urn to Janna.
He and his legal team ignored Alice's hysterics and left.
Janna was still in a daze.
Alice and Ken ran out.
Alice must have said something to Ken, because he stormed out, yelling at Janna, "Mom, you can't let that bastard child have Dad's inheritance!"
No man could tolerate being cheated on.
The incident back then wasn't suppressed, causing a huge scandal, and he had been laughed at for over twenty years.
If people found out now that Joshua left most of his inheritance to the bastard child, he would be ridiculed for the rest of his life.
Janna looked at Ken.
Rage surged within her.
She raised her hand and slapped Ken hard. "Bastard!"
Ken held his face, his head spinning.
"Mom! What are you doing!" Alice rushed forward.
Stuart pushed her, and she fell to the ground.
"Stay away from Ms. Rhoads!" he warned, word by word.
He was fierce.
Alice, in pain, started wailing. "Heartless, all of you!"
"Stuart, how dare you!" Ken shouted at Stuart.
Stuart glared at him.
Ken was scared.
"Do you know what you've lost because of that bitch!" Janna pointed at Ken. "How did I raise someone like you!"
After saying that, she shook her head.
She took the urn and gently caressed it. "Joshua, it's my fault. I let Jane down. Let's go home. I'll take you home."
Then, she hunched over and walked away without looking at Ken and Alice again.
