Chapter 600 A Traffic Jam
Burl let out a sigh of relief, slumping back into his chair with a heavy thud. He had been on edge.
It turned out Chicago was upset about someone else's affairs. "Burl, I used to think you were bad, but you wouldn't..." Chicago began.
"That's right, your uncle's always been great!" Burl interjected quickly. "He'll treat you even better from now on, just wait and see!"
"Yeah!" Chicago agreed, nodding. "Okay, bye, Uncle. I'm going to talk to Mommy and Daddy about adopting Ethan as my big brother."
"Huh?" Before Burl could react, Chicago ended the call, handing the phone back to Fiona.
"Adopt?" Fiona looked at Chicago in astonishment. "Where did you learn that word?"
"Some kids in our class were adopted!" Chicago explained. "Mommy, we have to punish Ethan's mean uncle and give Ethan a home too!"
Listening to their conversation, Darwin felt something was amiss no matter how he looked at it.
"Babe, we need Ethan's approval for this before we can discuss adopting him," Fiona told Chicago seriously.
"I'll go talk to Ethan!" Chicago declared confidently, patting her chest as if she could handle any challenge.
As they exited the school gate, someone called out loudly, "Mr. Solomon! Mr. Solomon!"
Instinctively, Darwin shielded Chicago and Fiona. Xavier and Mike turned their heads toward the commotion.
Outside the gate stood a middle-aged couple. The man wore a shabby suit with greasy hair, while the woman, though formally dressed, wore a cheap-looking outfit.
"Who are they?" Mike asked, his tone menacing.
Though a little frightened, the woman answered, "We're Ethan's uncle and aunt!"
Fiona glanced at Darwin, and Darwin glanced back. Then Fiona chuckled speechlessly; they hadn't even found them yet, and here they were.
"You're the ones who took Ethan's home!" Chicago was the first to react, stepping out from behind Darwin to confront the couple across the street.
As the youngest daughter of the family, even in her anger, Chicago's presence held firm.
The smiling couple froze, Ethan's uncle's face darkening.
"Kid, watch your mouth!"
Darwin intervened coldly, picking up Chicago and casting a chilling gaze at the couple.
"Oh, it's just a misunderstanding!" Ethan's aunt quickly intervened. "Mr. Solomon, you're here to see Ethan, right?"
"Darwin, take Chicago to the car first, I'll handle this," Fiona said, her hand gently patting Darwin's back twice.
Darwin usually handled such situations bluntly, but Fiona sought to resolve them permanently without resorting to violence.
"Okay." Darwin nodded, carrying Chicago to the car.
"Ms. Fiona, my husband's a bit impatient. He meant no harm to Ms. Chicago," Mary explained, her demeanor gentle compared to the man's.
Fiona approached them. "Ms. Fiona!"
"Lady..."
Mike and Xavier spoke simultaneously.
"It's fine," Fiona said, shaking her head as she approached. "Are you waiting here for us?"
"Uh, we didn’t have your contact info..."
Fiona looked at her. "What’s the matter?"
"How about we find a coffee shop and talk?" Mary suggested, a hint of anxiety in her tone.
‘Shouldn’t they offer to repay the favor first? Have they already paid Ethan?’
"No need. I prefer dealing with straightforward people. If you have something to say, say it," Fiona's tone remained cold.
Mary glanced at her husband. Useless.
Without a word, he left her to handle everything.
"Well... I'm easygoing too. Let's just get to the point. Ethan saved Ms. Chicago’s life, so about the reward..."
"Ethan declined," Fiona interjected.
"What?"Tom exclaimed. "He's just a kid, his words don't matter. We have to reward him; it's a matter of life and death!"
"I thought the same," Fiona's eyes grew colder. "We were discussing how to reward him just now."
"Ethan is just a child. His studies are most important now. It's up to me and his uncle," Mary quickly added.
‘Damn Ethan. He rejects every opportunity that comes his way! Thankfully, we waited today; otherwise, we would've missed out on a big sum of money.’
"What exactly do you want from us?" Fiona inquired.
"The house we're in is too small for our family. I know your family has a new development in Bay City with spacious layouts, perfect for our family!" Mary exclaimed excitedly. "If we had a house like that, Ethan wouldn't have to share a room with his siblings."
Fiona's lips curled slightly. These people had the audacity to ask for favors. The Rhoads family's luxury development in Bay City had units costing over twenty million.
Fiona was willing to spend that much for Ethan, but not for them.
"Alright, I understand. I'll speak to Ethan and get back to you," Fiona said, turning to leave.
Ethan’s uncle and aunt were taken aback and then grew anxious. "This is an adult matter; why involve Ethan?"
"I've heard enough between you and Ethan, and it sounds different from what you're saying now," Fiona began but left the sentence unfinished.
Ethan's aunt quickly interjected, "Those are just rumors!"
"Didn’t you kick Ethan out of his own home? Isn’t he living in an orphanage?" Fiona asked curiously.
"He ran away from home on his own, causing trouble. He returned home last night!" Ethan's aunt explained, showing Fiona a photo. "Here, he was home for dinner yesterday."
In reality, Mary had taken the photo to complain to her friends. "Ugh, Ethan is back!"
Fiona studied the photo, lost in thought. "I see... It seems you've been wrongly accused. Luckily, you waited here, otherwise, I don't know how my husband would've handled it."
Ethan's uncle and aunt felt a chill, realizing the danger they narrowly avoided.
"Mike, get their contact info and discuss compensation," Fiona instructed.
